Will either crash on Proton Experimental, Steam default Proton, or any Proton version
Does not work.

Game is a classic. Needs experimental proton for me.

Game is fine.. only works on expiremental branch for me

Works great out of the box

They stopped supporting linux and mac for the last few patches, which means you are unable to play online with other players

Manually edited the config file (search in your Home directory for "EugenSystems") to change "WindowFormStyle" from 1 to 0 (game now launches in windowed mode, otherwise I would just get a black screen)
I also had to set my taskbar to auto-hide, else it would get in the way of the game's UI
The game requires you to use a Proton version, not the native, in order to play with others online

Installed the windows version instead of the native linux version
The native version doesn't work but the windows version with proton works fine
Well, this game requires a little workaround to make it work:
- Using protontricks install the following programs: wmp11, devenum, quartz;
- Download Windows Media Player 9 (https://web.archive.org/web/20060513190231/http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/b/c/1bc0b1a3-c839-4b36-8f3c-19847ba09299/MPSetup.exe), using cabextract extract WMVCORE.DLL from the executable and copy it into ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251060/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64/.

Singleplayer: use native. Multiplayer: use protonge.

Game boots up, but cannot actualy play.
I'm sure it could be made to work, but I cant be bothered.

Use the Windows version with Proton. The Linux native variant is several versions out of date and it is not possible to play online with Windows users if you use that one.

Native Linux version seems to be abandoned. Had to switch to Windows version.

Native Linux version seems to be abandoned. Had to switch to Windows version.

Works well except for Multiplayer.
Multiplayer - Friends sees me as Offline. Cannot Invite.

Yes, Native runs good but no multiplayer mode. Proton enables me to connect with other players, but the game experience drops significantly
When playing the Native Linux version the game runs normaly, with a very high fps. But while on native, you can't play in multiplayer mode, because you can't connect with non-linux maschines.
After using proton, and I tried a few versions (6,7,8,GE), the game performance drops so significantly, that the game is unplayable. On native it runs super smoothly, as this is not heavy on my system, but when I use proton - the FPS drops to 5, so the game is unplayable. So I either play the Native version (no multiplayer) with good performance, or I don't play at all.
Can't play this game using Proton.
Please let me know how to run the game using Proton, without the significant FPS drop that is making the game unplayable. Thanks!

fullscreeen will cause crashes when enterering armory or playing a match/ W.Fullscreen works fine.
also the game defaults using DX9, recommend switching to DX11 before trying to launch a match.

Tried several different Proton versions. With most of them, the game didn't even start, only the 4.X version branch of Proton worked with some bugs. Then I switched to the most current version of GE and everything works without problems.
Works out of the box on Pop!_OS.
First ever MP match on Linux crashed. From that point on no issues.
change to opengl it will just work
some times can't load multiplayer room properly(stuck at loading page but can hear game start), need quit manually.
ge36 with dx11 also may work
Для запуска с помощью protontrics --gui установил wmp11. В настройках игры включил DX11
Через protontrics --gui установил wmp10 и wmv9vcm. Так же в настройках переключился на DX11.

Run this game on proton 5 for now, the cut scene at start might not work, but you can pass it by hitting esc.
My online experience used to be very instabile on Proton 6, 7 and GE. The game could crach up-to 3 times (without taking the game down, but giving a crash prompt that degraded the gaming experience somehow, until final crash). However, after having switched to proton 5, everything worked like butter in online play.
Newer protons fix start-up splash screen/video, but introduce stability issues.

Dosn't launch
"Can't open firefox while firefox is running" -> closes firefox -> nothing at all, not even a error
Intro is not working and a popup must be closed
Like on windows
Once the compatibility issues solved it works almost like a charm. (Properties -> Compatibility -> Check "Force use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" -> Chose "4.11-13")

Unstable, not playable
It is possible to get into the main menu by repeatedly re-maximising the game window that kept minimising itself and then tapping Enter->Escape->Escape. The game loaded the main menu briefly before locking up and forcing a hard close of the game.

Not working on Fedora, Linux Mint + RX 6800 XT
Using any Proton version above 6.3-8:
Game menu is starting but launching a (solo) game results in a crash with Error "Access Violation..."
I tried it on Fedora 35 and Linx Mint 20.3
Native version is not compatible anymore with Windows gamers...
Audio in logo cutscene has crackling and distortion. In game sounds do not have this, but soundly subtly different from Windows, with sounds having less bass and depth. It's acceptable given the nature of the game, but not ideal.
Multiplayer works fine on Proton. On the native version there is no crossplay with Windows/Proton users, which means multiplayer is effectively dead.
Linux version works well and has slightly better performance, but the lack of multiplayer crossplay severely limits access to multiplayer. Fortunately proton works fine apart from the aforementioned audio issues. I haven't encountered any crashes or issues with changing settings as other have reported.

Native and Proton borked.
Tried Native and realized that it is no longer supported (windows build is farther along and linux version will not be updated to it.) When native starts cursor simply locks to a window and nothing happens. Have to kill the process to regain mouse functionality.
Tried various proton versions from experimental and down. Nothing happens on start and the game immediately crashes with no window or popup at all.

Random crashes during match.
During launch the intro movie will not play and get stuck in a black screen, have to press ESC to skip.
Performance was okay but game crashes frequently. IDK if changing settings is a workaround.
Game crashes before loading login screen. 'UNKNOWN_EXCEPTION' & 'ACESS_VIOLATION' errors occur
Game ran great with OpenGL (Beta) with `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1`, occasional crashes on all DirectX versions
7.0rc6-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton runs better than native performance-wise. If you want to play multiplayer, Proton is a must due to differing versions.
At first start-up I got a WMV rendering error, presumably the intro video. Just close the error window and hit ESC in-game and it will take you to main menu.

Boots into black screen, crashes after "video" plays, saying "ACCESS VIOLATION: (Writing 0x000002b4)".
Tried different proprietary and open source nvidia drivers, different proton versions (including GE), some tweaks in the option.ini folder, and even allowing full read/write permission for sys32 in the game's proton directory. Nothing worked to get past the access violation. Native works fine, but there's no multiplayer with windows users, which kills online play.
Better experience than native: multiplayer compatibility, windowed borderless works properly, no random in-game crashes
Game very rarely crashes when loading map
Video settings crash
Crashes when trying to change graphics presets and graphic API, you have to change these manually in Options.ini file located in Proton prefix directory (in my case .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251060/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/EugenSystems/WarGame3
). I haven't tested any manual graphics tweaks besides changing GraphicPreset value (1 for insane, 5 for medium which is default, haven't tested others). For Graphic API values 1 is DirectX 11 which works fine.
No intro movies and loading screen backgrounds
Intro movies and loading screen backgrounds do not work, to get into the game you need to close warning window that pops up and then press ESC 2 times to skip intro movies which did not load.
TLDR: Enter, Esc, Esc to get into main menu.

After the new DLC the game catastrophically crashes at startup
It also crashes the desktop environment. It does not matter if you have the new DLC installed or not.
The game crashed frequently when changing options but didn't crash when playing.
When launching it will trow and error dialog and show a black screen due to the intro video. ALT+TAB and close the dialog and double press ESC to skip the intro.
A patch disabled native version crossplay with Windows. So you are required to run the game with Proton or everyone else should downgrade their games.
