As others have noted you have to compile proton from source with a patch for the game(and any combat mission games) to start. The good news is that once you do so the game runs perfectly. There are various visual issues such as LOD flickering, aliasing and odd looking lighting, but this is actually working as intended - the game engine is old and quirky and these oddities are also present on Windows. Performance is also poor, but again it's the same as Windows.
Native works great.
A flawless native release. It's not an intensive game, but performance isn't always a given for native linux ports even if they should run fine. COE5 however has no such problems, running just as well on my underpowered chromebook as it does on my desktop.
Framerate in the 15-25 range, much too low to play a game which requires precise control inputs. On windows the game runs at 60+ FPS
Framerate extremely low, unplayable
Videos didn't play
Game fails to launch with "image/texture not found" error
Game briefly opens a black window, then closes and displays a pop up error message which reads "image/texture not found". Tried 6.3.5, 6.12-GE and experimental.
Playable and mostly enjoyable, but not as good as on Windows.
Some sounds are much louder than expected, as though they aren't falling off due to distance correctly. A few times lines of dialogue would cut out halfway through playing. It happened often enough that it could prevent you from following the plot(In the unlikely event that you care.)
UI text is not antialiased correctly. Lights occasionally clipped through surfaces that should have occluded them(Could be ultrawide issues, but I don't remember it happening on Windows.)
Random severe stutter for a few seconds, throughout most levels, seemingly when loading or saving. Not Physx related.
Sometimes when starting a new level or resuming from a mid level checkpoint after starting the game performance will be very poor(<30FPS). It clears up after a few minutes and runs normally.
Definitely not platinum, at least not for my setup. It's playable, but with several minor issues that detract from the experience.
Flawless experience apart from crash on exit, which does not effect enjoyment of game.
Game runs perfectly but sometimes crashes when exiting via the main menu. Game can be closed by alt tabbing and stopping via steam.
Game works perfectly OOTB.
Tried hosting a game for friends. Worked perfectly, no issues.
Some visual issues with widescreen and high resolutions, but these also happen on Windows. Overall Battlefront 2 seems to be a better experience on Linux than Windows these days.
Works great OOTB with proton 6.3
Game crashed after alt tabbing and then returning to game. Crash does not always occur.
Workarounds for video playback aren't needed as of proton 6.3, however the directx 9 version of the game has serious rendering issues. It is reportedly quite buggy, so may not be a proton issue as such. The directx 8 version works flawlessly and performs well, cannot tell it's not a native release.
6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Used protontricks 251150 dinput8 to get evo voice mod working. protontricks initially failed to work with proton 6.X or GE. I had to change the proton version to 5.0-10, run protontricks and then change back to 6.X to get it to work.
Alt+Tabbing and then returning to game sometimes crashes game.
Audio in logo cutscene has crackling and distortion. In game sounds do not have this, but soundly subtly different from Windows, with sounds having less bass and depth. It's acceptable given the nature of the game, but not ideal.
Multiplayer works fine on Proton. On the native version there is no crossplay with Windows/Proton users, which means multiplayer is effectively dead.
Linux version works well and has slightly better performance, but the lack of multiplayer crossplay severely limits access to multiplayer. Fortunately proton works fine apart from the aforementioned audio issues. I haven't encountered any crashes or issues with changing settings as other have reported.
