Changed quite a few options in Quakes config file. This isn't due to Linux but due to it being an old game. Had to force texture resoltion being higher along with modern resolutions.
Textures would be forced to their lowest, regardless of selection in menus. Had to be done by editing config files.

Game has annoying audio bug where it's delayed and crackling, and I can't change the settings
I don't see anywhere on the web about my issue, and uninstalling the game and reinstalling it does nothing, which sucks as I never got to properly play the game

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput.dll=n,b" %command%
Used quake4tweakertool installed via protontricks

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput.dll=n,b" %command%
Downloaded Quake4 Tweak tool, installed, and ran using protontricks-launch --appid 2210 ./Quake4TweakerGUI.exe
inside game directory to get 4k res and frame rateunlock. Launch options required for game to use dinput.dll to unlock framerate
1080p max resolution you can select in game, use Quake4TweakTool

Game works out of the box and I also used AI Upscaled textures mod. Quake 4's engine is open sourced and you can find binaries of Linux too but mods don't support the Linux version. Great experience overall, only problem I've encountered is frame capping to 30 FPS. Mods that uncap the frames don't work on Linux and even if they did, people reported unstability.

The Quake4config.cfg for Ultra resolution textures fix. Thank you Ponk Ponyo, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=175832751
Right trackpad mouse. Gyro on trackpad or right stick. Left trackpad radial menu for weapon switch. L4/L5 Quick save/load.
5W TDP, 40hz refresh rate. Can easily do 60fps
After replacing the Quake4Config.cfg, in game need to adjust resolution to widescreen, and 1280x720 resolution and restart to take effect. Skipping intros is a great QOL too.
For whatever reason, I had so many issues with the GOG version, but the Steam version works like a charm.

5+ minutes to launch the game. 10+ minutes to load into the first mission
Game loading speed
Tried GOG version, installed via Heroic Launcher. Would launch in desktop mode, but not in game mode. Tinkered with Proton 8, 7, Experimental and would not launch. Finally got it to launch in game mode by setting WineGE and ProtonGE in Heroic. 5-10 minute launch and load times, respectively. Not worth the hassle.
Will test with Steam version next time it is on sale.

I had the game detect settings to generate a fresh Quake4Config.cfg, then kept adjusting the texture sizes up until they looked good.
low quality textures unless you manually edit Quake4Config.cfg
Despite the lack of high-res textures, the game is playable and enjoyable.
Very low texture resolution despite ultra quality in the settings. The lightning was very basic, too, with no depth.
When the game's loading and I hit Alt+Tab, the game crashes.
I haven't done any tricks to try get those high-res textures.
Works perfectly, however haven't tried multiplayer (also no graphics issues like the windows version either!)
Works perfectly, at least for singleplayer!
Quicksave & Quickload
If you skip intors, you will have some shaders black or white. If you dont skip them, all is fine.

Using Proton 5.13-6, the game runs perfectly as expected, with no issues. On Experimental and 7.0.1, the screen becomes tiny and upside down, making it completely unplayable. On other versions, it simply refuses to launch.
Low resolution textures, fixed by forcing ultra quality via autoexec.cfg file. Also need to enable r_ignoreHWGamma because otherwise some shader effects like heat haze render as black.
The previous reports show how to fix the problem with textures, resolution, gamma, etc. But I will explain how to do it so that it works in my case.
This configuration file has been the one that worked for me, replacing or copying its content to the game folder into the Quake4Config.cfg
and enabling the value of r_ignoreHWGamma
to 1 has been enough for me to play without any problem at good quality.
Apart from Quake 4's problems of having aged somewhat badly with the evolution of the hardware, I have to say that I'm a bit surprised that everything is running smoothly and without any problems.
Some graphical issues, but other than that the game runs well
By default the textures are extremely blurry, and there's this weird issue that makes everything look like the game is running in a 8-bit RGB color mode.
As described in other reports, you have to use the modified Quake4Config.cfg. One thing to note here: DO NOT CHANGE GRAPHICAL SETTINGS after you put the modified cfg in your folder. I kept changing some stuff, and it was not fixing the blurry textures. My computer is pretty low-spec, so I didn't wanna use Ultra settings. You can change the resolution and the brightness, but the rest of the graphical settings should be left alone. Unfortunately, it means that for people with weaker computers, you have to choose between sharp textures and good performance. There's no in-between.
you gotta mess up with the settings lil bit.

Textures were low resolution upon starting the game. Also, there were intense banding artifacts making the game appear as if it was running in 16 bit color mode (even though it was not).
Using the same config file tweaks noted by others fixed the low texture resolution issue. Changing 'seta r_ignoreHWGamma "0"' to 'seta r_ignoreHWGamma "1"' in Quake4Config.cfg fixed the banding artifacts.
The game runs really well. The only thing is that it may force your graphics to low.
To fix the low graphics, you can overwrite the settings in a config file. This is the one I used, which is a modified version of one submitted by another reporter (more details on the link). I only changed the multisamples from 16 to 8. Otherwise, the fix would apply at all.
Game crashed once.
Manual load of a Quake4Config.cfg in the steam folder: Quake 4/q4base/
Game works great, but it is ugly: as the textures are all blurry, by default, even with the High Quality settings.
Until I loaded a new Quake4Config.cfg in the steam folder :
Quake 4/q4base/
. Then it was all perfect! Source
Ran everything at ultra with no problems at all. Works great.
Works flawlessly but it can crash randomly on Aqueduct level.
Proton 3.16-9 provides a flawless, exceptionnal experience
In my previous experience in playing the game under Windows, it often crashed in the Aqueducts levels and framerates would be inconsistent even on modern hardware. But now, by using Proton 3.16-9 (which is coincidentally the same version Valve automatically selects for Doom 2016) instead of the newest version, the game performs extremely well and is more stable than it has ever been. What a joy!
The game works without modification.
You can also install mods to improve the quality of graphics. Also the game works without a problem. See video gameplay https://youtu.be/pt0RDKXRQVc
Blurry textures and black screen
Black screen appeared after some manual configurations.
Mouse sensitivity is too high.

I tried running this game using Proton v4.11-4 and v4.2-9 but the game lags in the game menu and it's impossible to do anything.
My solution was to run the game using Proton v3.7-8 which runs great on a Lenovo x230.

Runs better than on Windows: it runs without problem and loads the introduction cinematic.

The game launches with a black screen that renders it useless. Also after fixing the black screen issue, you'll find that the textures in game are all blurry.
To fix both problems you need to change the some values in your "Quake4Config.cfg" file which is stored in the "q4base" folder within the Quake 4 main install folder.

TO FIX BLURRY TEXTURES: https://www.gog.com/forum/quake_series/quake_4_low_res_texture_fix

I followed this guide here... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=175832751 had to change from FULLSCREEN to windowed in that file BEFORE i could see anything at all beyond black (no render) (bad resolution setting) (1080p) went into the game's menu, changed to 1080p, and fullscreeen. no problems at all since. never clocked the game, so how far i am is an unknown to me relatively speaking, but i've not yet bordered the spacecraft for the second time, but am fairly close. so it's not like i've played for ten minutes. I'd recommend the file being tweaked to start windowed, and merged into steam's download. auto apply esync. and the game is platinum status. (i'm not even sure it needs esync, but mine is on, probably from diagnosing the black screen issue i originally had that was actually bad config)
Running on fedora

Odd issues with Smoke particles, and getting hit turns your screen white briefly. Scope for Assault rifle doesn't work.

No performance issues.

No performance issues.

Follow instructions in the various discussions to get the textures just right ie https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=175832751

Stable without any issue observed

Seems to run great. Official Linux binaries available outside Steam, but haven't been maintained in years.

No errors detected. Game defaults to low settings mode but can be changed once game begins. Linux Native version has issues with sound and may no longer be supported.
