Absolutely flawless, right out of the box
The game performs consistently from beginning to end, with better Vsync than Windows. I haven't tried Multiplayer.
Like previous contributors have noted, the game's executable must be replaced with a cracked one. This appears to disable achievements but everything works and performs perfectly after that.
Proton 3.16-9 provides a flawless, exceptionnal experience
In my previous experience in playing the game under Windows, it often crashed in the Aqueducts levels and framerates would be inconsistent even on modern hardware. But now, by using Proton 3.16-9 (which is coincidentally the same version Valve automatically selects for Doom 2016) instead of the newest version, the game performs extremely well and is more stable than it has ever been. What a joy!
Works flawlessly on Steam Play and Proton 5.0-5
As mentioned by other contributors, the -window command line argument must be added to the launch options the first time the game is started up. It can then be set to fullscreen through the game's main menu options and the -window line can be removed after that. The game will always start in fullscreen from that point.
Also, on my setup I found the fps_max 60 to be useful to resolve issues with mouse movement. It can simply be added using the in-game console. This is not an issue with Proton however; I clearly remember doing that on Windows years ago.
Still impeccably flawless
Since I've made a few changes to my system lately, such as upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and using new Nvidia drivers (440.100) and Proton 5.0-9, I've tested the whole game to completion again. It remains flawless from beginning to end, with perfect mouse smoothness and Vsync support.
