Despite its rating from Valve Software (at the time of writing), this game appears to run just fine on the Steam Deck, with no issues.
For most actions in the game, the default controls are set to keyboard keys; I needed to re-map those actions to the Steam Deck buttons, using the in-game menu.
Interaction with menus must be done using either the touchscreen of the touchpad on the right of the Steam Deck.

Make sure to start with the "-windowed" Launch option to configure the game for my resolution in full screen mode.
Game is a modified version of Source.

Plays well other than the issue with underwater textures, which only involves a small part of the gameplay.
Most menu and in-game text. Can be remedied by lowering the resolution.
Underwater objects do not render correctly while the player is also underwater. Everything appears grayish-white instead of its natural color.
See pc gaming wiki for details.
main menu looks broken but is fully functional. This may be a resolution issue. Vendor agnostic.
Game launches to a black screen by default.
To get it working,
- Launch the game with the
-windowed
launch option and set the resolution to 1080 - Once the game launches to the main meny, set up the graphics settings the way you want and remove the compatibility options like windowed and forced resolution.
- The game works at this point but you will need to tinker with the controls.
Had to remap a bunch of missing buttons.
Left Joystick movement didn't work without breaking right joystick mouse. WASD left joystick worked.
Even after using -windowed launch option would hang till I went down to 4-11-13
Had to downgrade proton version and used -windowed set resolution. Could then go back to using fullscreen and got rid of -windowed in launch options.
Does not work OOTB , small things to do.
OOTB - blackscreen lockup. Workaround : First run only : 1. set launch option -windowed 2. I also needed to switch to Proton 5.0-10 3. Start game , Video options : full screen. (and changed to 1080). Exit game you can remove the launch option and use the default Proton.
Still impeccably flawless
Since I've made a few changes to my system lately, such as upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and using new Nvidia drivers (440.100) and Proton 5.0-9, I've tested the whole game to completion again. It remains flawless from beginning to end, with perfect mouse smoothness and Vsync support.
Works flawlessly on Steam Play and Proton 5.0-5
As mentioned by other contributors, the -window command line argument must be added to the launch options the first time the game is started up. It can then be set to fullscreen through the game's main menu options and the -window line can be removed after that. The game will always start in fullscreen from that point.
Also, on my setup I found the fps_max 60 to be useful to resolve issues with mouse movement. It can simply be added using the in-game console. This is not an issue with Proton however; I clearly remember doing that on Windows years ago.
First run you must set launch options as windowed with -windowed and set to full screen once in game but after that you can remove the window launch option and the game works fine
crashes when full screen is used

game crashed once when applying graphics settings. restarted, graphics settings did apply and started the game with no issues. everything looks to be working with no troubles.

The first run must be in window mode (-windowed). During the game you can change the options for fulscrean. During the next game launches, you can remove the -windowed option, the game will now run without problems.

Game crashes immediately, without ever displaying anything. On Wine worked fine.

The game is unable to play FMVs (intro videos) on Full Screen, so you need to start the game with either the -novid parameter or the -windowed parameter. After that the game works just like the Windows counterpart.

Game crashes immediately, without ever displaying anything.

Game doesn't start at all. Works fine using regular Wine.
