This game requires Proton GE to play back video sequences. With the regular version of proton, it will show color bars for a moment and skip the video. This can lead to potential instability. Moving to Proton GE will solve those issues and allow video sequences to play back correctly.
I would recomend running the game with Proton GE for the best experence. Videos will not play back with the regular proton versions. Running the game with Proton GE will solve those issues.

Left click on Right Trackpad, no longer skip.

Works Flawlessly

Cutscene issues resolved by using Proton 8.0-5 (also works with GE-Proton9-2)
Previously used Proton 6.3-8 and had issues with cutscenes (sometimes they were laggy, some times they were skipped, sometimes the audio would play for a sec and then stop, sometimes it would flash the SMPTE color bars instead, etc)
With Proton 8.0-5 this is not longer an issue. Also tested GE-Proton9-2 which also works as expected. (Other versions may/likely work as well but were not tested)

Minor adjustments to mouse sensitivity
Limit to 12W TDP for 60FPS almost always. FSR and even lower TDP might be an option but then text legibility could become a real issue.
Some text is on the limit of what is actually readable on a steamdeck. You might need to use the magnifier
Keep in mind this gamer doen't have steam cloud saves, I set up Syncthing for having a save backup and sharing with my other pcs.
gamemoderun STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/home/$USER/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1580130 %command%

Note that you'll have to setup Syncthing or rclone if you want to enable your own cloud save support, as it seems the developers aren't working on that until a finished release.
Works as intended
At one point the game started having heavy issues with the lighting that made it almost unplayable. This issue resolved itself after some time. No updates to the game or Proton were installed inbetween the issues happening and being resolved.
The only issue I had with the lighting may have been another dependency aside from Proton. But aside from that happening, I never had any complaints. The game runs well on the highest settings.
Runs great just switch to community layout for better controls
Platinum experience.
I am using Proton-6.20-GE-1 to get video cutscenes working, and I had to DISABLE MANGOHUD to avoid crashes.
Using steam proton or proton-GE, both come with VERY frequent crashes during loading screens. It actually seems to be steam that crashes, the game then follows at the next loading screen, by freezing. To recover, the game process has to be killed and steam restarted. Fortunately auto-save functions reliably and no progress gets lost from the occurrence.
The crashes are somehow related to MangoHUD. Removing the global environment variable that I was using to enable it for all games, and not using it with Subverse, allowed the game to become stable for me.

Changed focus at some point and the mouse stopped registering in the game. Could have been a window manager issue but it seemed fine on consecutive launches.
Current Proton Experimental at the time of writing this had issues playing pre-rendered cutscenes. Playing on 6.20-GE-1 made them work as normal though.

I didn't try normal proton as GE was recommended here, but this at least works really well.
6.20-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
A couple glitches in loading screens
Sure isn't 144hz but it's not a big deal.
Tried Proton Experimental, 6.3-7, 6.20-GE-1, 6.18-GE-2 and 6.16-GE-1, audio issues still persist with all versions.
Cutscenes are heavily crackling to the point that they are unwatchable. Sound during gameplay (space, ground, Pandora) is as expected
During ground combat, Lily's (and I suspect everyone else's) comic style animation popup displayed a test screen instead.
Just install the Glorious Eggroll custom proton build and you should be golden
Apart from some video playback problem the game runs perfectly, ground and space battles, as well as Pandora ;)
Some explosions seemed like squared for some reason
some video playback got stuttery and some didnt play at all. Sound on some videos got garbled up

Runs perfect on Proton 6.18-GE-2. Tried Proton 6.3-7 and Proton Experimental but both caused cinematic to 'fail'
6.18-GE-2 GloriousEggroll

Runs pretty much flawlessly. The cutscene playback problem seems to have been fixed on Proton-6.16-GE-1
Missing out on cut-scenes is a major problem, but the core of the game-play still works perfectly.
It appears that cut-scene videos do not play, instead showing a multicolored screen similar to when an old television broadcast cut out due to technical issues.

Works with Proton Experimental, some videos do not work.
Some videos did not work Media Foundation Problems.
Works without issues with ProtonGE-6.10

The first time I loaded an old save before I used the proton fork it stuck in the loading screen, it solved when I created a new game.
We need a way to play games with anticheat, I'm tired of having a windows partition just for some games.
works great, no bags

(Pv5.13-6) While playable, you get black screen cutscenes.
Black screen cutscenes.
The game plays at full framerate, has no input lag, and is generally about as native of an experience as you could get. You will get some slowdown or freeze with the first few effects, but that's more of a Vulkan limitation that will disappear over longer playtime. However, due to the lack of cutscenes, this still is a bit of a deal-breaker.

Broken (Pv6.3-1)
Would fullscreen to a test screen, then lock up on a black screen to the point of needing to be forcibly closed.

Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF
Crashes at Loading screen. You can tell it of it doesn't blink for more than 3 seconds. Most frequent are P.A.N.D.O.R.A. crashes, almost 3/4 tries ended in crashes. Then 1/2 is bridge-to-map load screen. All others are some dice with occasional luck.
Custom proton refused to init in fusefs
, where my hard drives are mounted.
When looking at process table, it managed to stall at this step:
C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 ${PROTON_LOCATION}\dist\bin\..\share\wine\wine.inf
Moving into plain user homedir fixed the issue, though VCRedist installation is a bit clunky.
Anyway, ground combat is manageable, space combat is playable. Scenes are viewable. I managed to get through all the content as of the date of this review.
Works fine, In engine stuff works best, cutscenes work but are kinda wonky
Cutscene audio is scuffed, crackling especially at the beginning and out of sync (Characters don't move their mouths so that one is pretty minor)
Running under Proton-6.1-GE-1. Didnt work for me at first as I had to install bubblewrap for Steam containers to get it running. Also did a kernel update to 5.11 and Nvidia 460.67 drivers idk if that had anything to do with it.

Game runs fine as long as you don't mind alt-tabbing a bunch of times during the loading screens.
Losing focus on the window will freeze the game during loading screens.
Freezes during loading screens. Can be fixed by alt-tabbing a bunch of times.
Works fine

5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
5.9-GE-8-ST
Although I played it on windows too and there is some crackling there too.
Crashed on the Bridge a few times, auto-save makes this not really a big deal.

Everything works well with Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF, cutscenes are playing smoothly as well on this version. Game freezes from time to time.
Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF

Loadscreen crashes made navigating the ship brutal since there are so many there, never lost progress tho. Everything else works fine.
5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll

Freezes and crashes on load screens

Proton-6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.1-GE-2
Cutscenes are video's and the audio crackles and the video play's at a slightly slower speed then normal.
When in the ship overview later in the game, you can visit area's of the ship. When going there, there is a loading screen, sometimes it crashes during loading.
4.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Locks up frequently on the Mary Celeste. Seems to freeze a little less often with Proton-6.1-GE-2 and Proton 5.13.6 but the cutscenes are a distorted mess or don't play at all respectively on those Proton versions. Luckily the meat of the game (navigation, space battles, ground battles) is rock solid.

Game starts, music starts, big purple cursor is there. Black screen (albeit running at 60 fps), unplayable.
Upon research, has something to do with windows media player? Not sure if it can be installed in proton.

Proton-5.21-GE-1
i'm not sure but if you disconnect the keyboard the game freezes
can't go beyond 60fps and the cutscenes tank a bit

Proton-6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Locked up several times but was able to play for nearly an hour before it crashed resetting system.

Audio crackling on the Early Access release seems to be a problem for Windows users too.
Another bug affecting Windows users as well is a black screen on launch. For proton, the workaround is to use Proton 6.1-GE-2 AND do the media foundation fix for the game https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab
