Initially the game kept crashing at the race loading screen when I tried to run it with Proton 5.0-7. I reverted to 4.11-13 to get it to work. Subsequently with a bit of tinkering, I found out that Proton 5.0 uses D9VK by default and you need to pass PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 in order for the game to run properly.

Like what many others have reported below, you need to install dotnet40 (I installed dotnet46 inside my WINEPREFIX) in order to get the configuration tool working properly. Otherwise the game will start with default video settings e.g. Low graphics.

It runs perfectly now.
