Changed buttons configuration layout, reduce right trackpad sensitivity and enabled Gyro for precise aiming. User preferences.
Connected to many servers. Worked wonderfully. Some servers enforced higher tick-rate, e.g 90-120Hz, requiring your FPS (Frames Per Second) to match the tick-rate to ensure smooth gameplay. Disable VSync in game and SteamOS settings, lower graphical settings will help mitigating this issues. Otherwise, just play on 60Hz servers, which there are plenty.
Install and play. As easy as that. Some changes to controlling scheme are required but nothing too specific and it comes down to user preferences. Keyboard + Mouse connection will make this game even better to play. Still is a very solid shooter.

Changing the compatibility layer to Proton Experimental and controlling scheme to K+M will be more than enough to play this game.

Follow this guide to enable 3D Accelaration and higher resolution. Works on Steam Deck and Linux in general.
Reduce sensitivity of touch pad. User preferences.
The Steam guide embedded contains a community patch that will help running this game on newer hardware. While the guide is strictly Windows, I have performed the same steps on my Steam Deck and it works like a charm. If you are a fan of classic PopCap games, this is a must.

The Steam guide embedded contains a community fix to make the game runs on newer hardware and Steam Deck in particular. No version of Proton is used.

Mouse input will be extremely laggy and uncontrollable. Disable VSync in game settings as well as SteamOS settings will solve the issues. Controller works normally. However, glyphs will show PC buttons.
'EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700' will allow players to join multiplayer. Change the resolution by modifying the launch options. Aspect ratio are as follow: 1.6 = 16:10 | 1.7 = 16:9
Personal additions and changes
Using Proton, game will not connect to a Multiplayer session on Valve dedicated server. It will give "Remove Plug-ins before connecting to VAC secure servers" warning.
Local host connections do not have any trouble.
Playing L4D2 on native Linux on the Steam Deck is the way to go. Proton, even with the latest patch, GE or Experimental, will not run Multiplayer. If choosing Proton, the game can only be played either Singleplayer or local co-op.
Personal settings, but you can make do with a community layout
40Hz screen refresh rate, lower graphical settings
Expect 1.5 - 2 hours of play time on battery. Highly recommend M&KB as this game is built for that in mind. You will need to make your own or find community control layout, as the base layout is not that good. Other than that, game will run fine, servers connection no problem.
Just install and play. This game does not need any configuration to work. Simple and seamless.
This launch option will force Steam to use OpenXcom source port to run the game. Simply copy-paste folder location containing OpenXcom AppImage executable from "https://openxcom.org/git-builds/". Include %COMMAND% at the end.
For example, I put the AppImage package into default installation folder. The launch option will look like this:
"/run/media/mmcblk0p1/steamapps/common/XCom UFO Defense/OpenXcom_86-64.AppImage" %COMMAND%

The guide works for both original XCOM and Terror From the Deep.

This report is the same as my report for X-COM: UFO Defense. When OpenXcom is installed, you have to change the game manually within OpenXcom Mods menu. OpenXcom makes the game 100 times more enjoyable.

With OpenXcom, game runs smooth, with tons of customizations and mods that you can use to spice up your game. Definitely a must have source port to play the game instead of using DOSBOX emulator. There are community patches that can be applied to refine the game farther, however this is not mandatory and not hard to do. Literally copy-paste from patches to game folder.
