Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll
Configuration tool shows only boxes instead of text (is it trying to show the Japanese font?), search for "alltynex second config translation" in Google Images to see what the options say.
Seems to work fine in Proton
When I got 53~ FPS in native version I got 35~ FPS in Proton
Better to stick with the Linux native version I think. If you run into some problem with the native version then you can switch (saves are cross-platform compatible), but otherwise I wouldn't bother.
Seems to run fine
The in-game's FPS limiter is slow to come into effect. At the start of every race I'd have to wait a minute before the FPS cap that I had set in the game's settings would start working. I can not confirm if this is an issue with Proton, or the game itself.
I have not tested how the performance compares to the native Linux version, or how it compares to running the game natively on Windows. I did experience stuttering and had to turn several settings down, but I don't know if this was because of Proton or not.
Has some issues. Linux native is better
Fair amount of stuttering (compared to Linux native)
FPS limited is slow to come into effect - had to wait a minute before each race. Linux native doesn't have this problem, but I did notice that sometimes the FPS limiter would stop working, though all I had to do was re-save settings and it'd toggle back on.
Tried to use libstrangle (0.1.1) on Proton version but its FPS limiter would just disable itself after 10 minutes~ of gameplay.
If I remember correctly the linux native version received an update awhile ago to fix the issue with it not running certain tracks, but I haven't tested any custom tracks.
Improves performance
Performance is the same as Linux native (with WINED3D enabled). Maybe a little worse
Lots of sound loops. Needs a custom version of dsound (I used the version that previous reports mentioned) and a dll override for it
Ubisoft somewhat broke the game with an update a little while ago that was supposed to add controller support. This update changed the default language for audio to French and supposedly heavily reduced game performance, there are guides for Windows users (https://steamcommunity.com/app/15130/discussions/0/1609400247628782901/) but it is not so easy to do on Linux without first getting access to the Settings Application of the game (the registry editing solutions don't seem to be reliable).
In order to open the Settings Application you need to be using an instance of WINE with the right version of EAX installed - the program also won't work if you rename it. I have no idea how you would go about doing this - so hopefully someone else can figure this out and make a guide on it.
Alternatively, you could maybe try and grab the GOG version of the game and run it through Steam, which is supposedly the pre-patched version of the game. Ubisoft might also revert the patch if enough people harass them about it (why did they patch it out of the blue?).
The game also needs a widescreen patch (check PCGamingWiki)
The settings application being borked means it is seemingly not possible get the game's audio in English
Get a custom version of dsound.dll and add a DLL override for it. The dsound link I used was the one mentioned in one of the earlier reports. I experienced a bit of audio crackling after doing this, though.
The settings application for the game is borked; even if you try to run it on a WINE instance with the right EAX version installed the application simply won't run. This means you can't change the language of the game from French to English or anything else
Grab the GOG version of the game and run that in Steam instead, that has the previous version of the game before Ubisoft broke it. The GOG version gives you an in-game option on what language to use and supposedly has better performance than the new version.
You will also be needing a widescreen mod for this game, check PCGamingWiki for that.
%command% -oldgameui
I tested the performance between the linux native version and the windows version through proton, they both run about the same.
Game does not close properly and lots of visual glitches otherwise.
Not related to proton but the game has a fixed resolution and isn't playable in widescreen. I attempted to use WINE's upscaling but it didn't seem to do anything with this game
Needs PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Various effects in-game were missing, such as fire effects and bloater vomit. Several of the cutscenes in the Ryder campaign didn't even display, other than subtitles
Played it with libstrangle + gamemode and had no problems. Note that the game has microstuttering issues and mouse sensitivity issues (on Windows too) so it's recommended to check out the Dead Island Helper program (see PCGamingWiki) for customisation
Improves performance notably. At a new game I went from 45~ FPS to 58~ FPS after switching to Wine D3D
Broken Cutscenes that are fixed by switching to Proton-GE. I didn't use Proton-GE however, as I noticed very significant performance regressions (in both 5.21-1 and 5.9-8). Down from 58~ FPS to 32~ FPS and much more unstable framerates.
Runs extremely well through Proton.
Changing the resolution from the default using in-game settings leads to the resolution being reset to the lowest option. I'm not entirely sure if this is caused by Proton or not, though.
Considering the resolution bug; it's important to use the widescreen patch, but I'm not sure how to do this through Proton (you can use it if you're fine with running WINE and no steam intergration) so if anyone figures out how to do this, please share so others can use it.
Borked on Proton 5.0-1. Actual game works out of the box if you don't care about resolution.
In order to get 1920x1080 you need to install the PCGamingWiki Patch, and add a dll override for d3d9
The 1280x1024 resolution selectable in-game is somewhat broken, after restarting the game it will revert back to the lowest resolution available. I do not actually know if this is because of Proton or not
Reunion modpack (06f) doesn't work
The Reunion modpack is borked. The installer runs fine though and the game seems to detect the modpack after adding dll overrides for aali.dll, bass.dll, bass_fx.dll, and ddraw.dll (Reunion uses these). The problem is that the modpack seems to require certain registry entries to be present, and it seems like when running the game through Proton these registry entries are not created (or not created in a way that the modpack finds satisfactory).
Someone with better knowledge of registry entries (and how the game creates them on native Windows) might want to mess around with them a bit and see if they can get the pack working.
Registry file needs to be manually imported (for mods that need it, such as Reunion). Add details regarding ff7_en.exe to https://www.regfiles.net/registry/final-fantasy-vii-registry then download the registry file and use regedit (set to the game's wineprefix) to import it.
In order to use the Reunion modpack, I had to add DLL overrides to both ff7_launcher.exe and ff7_en.exe for aali.dll, bass.dll, bass_fx.dll, and ddraw.dll. Someone mentioned on Github that they only had to add dll overrides for ddraw.dll, but I did not test this.
Wasn't able to get it to run - only had a black screen
Uplay is also extremely buggy and prone to quite a lot of crashes. My tests were done using previously mentioned workarounds and settings
Improves performance
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 fixes audio crackling
Felt like something was notably bottlenecking the performance but cannot confirm, which seems to match up with what other reports have said. Heavily doubt this came from Uplay
Uplay is incredibly unstable
Does not seem to work at all in Proton 5 (crashes on launch), even with WINED3D in use. This is a shame as Uplay is much more stable in newer versions of Proton. I did not do in-depth testing on Proton 5 so it may be possible to get it to run on it with some customisation, doing so might lead to better in-game performance.
Large Address Aware improves in-game performance. Wine D3D is needed as the game seems to be borked on Vulkan.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 is needed to fix audio crackling
Could get 60-70fps on Windows, was only able to get 40-50fps through Proton.
Performance is notably better in the native version
Poor performance
Suffered from lots of graphical glitches when anti-aliasing was enabled. Runs fine with it off.
Appears to be borked on 4.11-8
Game appears to be running on Steam but there is no game window. Worked perfectly on previous versions, as other reports have stated.
Unplayable with the crashing
Heavy amounts of crashes, can't even play longer than a couple of minutes.
Attempted to run in previous versions of Proton and with -autoconfig added, they didn't make any difference. Native version is completely borked as well.
Disabled the steam overlay. Before doing this I had frequent crashes every 2~ minutes.
I had one random crash throughout my 3 hours playing.
Native version is completely borked. Did not test co-op in the Nuclear Throne Together mod.
Runs well after 1.1b patch + 1080p resolution pack
Intro video is only black (can be skipped with ESC) - 1.1b adds an additional intro video that cannot be skipped
Before patching the game I experienced heavy artifacts and graphical issues, along with some stability issues. I'm not submitting this as a Tinker report as it seems like these are issues with the game itself and are fixed with an official patch. I didn't have issues with the steam overlay.
protontricks 1113000 wmp9 quartz devenum wmp9's setup did not seem to finish correctly, it did not finish correctly with Proton 4.11, either. Couldn't install things at all in Proton 5.13 as there were permission errors (I'm guessing this is because of the new runtime). Tried LAVFilters but cutscene audio was missing; K-Lite Codecs worked fine for me.
Audio in cutscenes was missing entirely. I think this may have been caused by wmp9's setup not being finished.
Others have mentioned the game randomly breaking after awhile, I haven't played much so if I run into any issues later on I'll make another report. It was mentioned on the Github page that when installing K-Lite you should select Advanced and uncheck "Show LAV Splitter icon", and "Show LAV decoder icons"

Game runs perfectly. Paradox's launcher seems to work now in Proton
Performance is better running the game through Proton
Random crashes seem to occur at anytime whilst the game is open. Not playable.
Game would just crash after being open for a minute or two
Runs quite well, some issues I may not have noticed as I did have the game patched to run in 1920x1080.
Game will sometimes crash when entering new areas (completely random), this is very annoying and this game doesn't always autosave when you enter a new area so you can lose progress (make sure to manually save)
This issue is not related to Proton, but I had to disable the Steam overlay in order to get past character creation without crashing.
Lantern engine for the BetterSADX mod does not work. I set a dll override for d3d8.dll, but then the game would just crash after a few seconds of white screen
I also had to enable "skip intro" in the BetterSADX config to prevent crashing at the start of the game
Has the initial loading screen but then it switches to a black screen.
Enabling the DirectX Compatability option did not help, it actually made things worse and I didn't even reach the initial loading screen.
Game does not run, even after several different launch options for Proton.
Native version also has poor performance on Linux.
The original version provided by Steam (that runs through DOSBox) seems to run fine
I attempted to get the Windows version of UQM running through Steam (as SC1&2), but it seems to be borked. Steam seems to send some launch argument to the executable which is not valid in UQM, and UQM refuses to launch if there are any invalid arguments. I also tried running the MegaMod (0.8.0.84,) but I experienced the same problem. It may be possible to remove this launch argument through the use of winetricks (though, I doubt it), but I am not familiar with how to use it.
Steam version (that runs through DOSBox) works OOTB - possible to get UQM running through tinkering
Custom Executable
In order to get UQM running you need to:
- Remove all the files within the "Star Control 2" folder (you don't need to touch 1)
- Make a new DOSBox folder (to replace the old one) inside "Star Control 2" & move all your UQM files into this new DOSBox folder
- Make a custom executable that will close itself and open our UQM executable - you can do this by roughly following this short guide (and making changes to instead target our UrQuanMasters.exe file which we are trying to run) https://stackoverflow.com/a/50185490 (use backward slashes as Proton needs to read this)
Step 3 is required as SC1&2 will try to send command line arguments to whatever executable it tries to run and these arguments will prevent UQM from running (you can test this for yourself), thus we need a middleman .exe that will absorb these arguments
- Name our new executable to "DOSBox.exe" and place it inside our "DOSBox" folder - this the file that SC1&2 will target and try to run
- Copy the "content" folder from inside our "DOSBox" and paste it into the "Star Control 2" directory (also where our DOSBox directory is contained) - for some reason this is the directory that UQM seems to check when looking for this folder, when it's running under SC1&2 (this might also affect other UQM files but from what I've seen you only need to copy the "content" folder)
- You should now be able to play UQM as SC1&2 - allowing you to track your playtime properly and make some use out of owning this on Steam
Was not able to get the TVFix patch to work. Game simply would not run once I added the files, and it didn't matter if the game was set to borderless or windowed. Dug deeper and found an error regarding POWRPOF.dll but even once I added the newest version of the dll (needed an override as well) the game still would not run with the patch installed (but the POWRPROF.dll error was gone). Needs further investigation and testing
Works first time after installation, borked on future runs
There's always one file that fails to verify and needs to be redownloaded. It's a shame as the native version is poorly maintained
Fixes old flames flickering
LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1 fixed the screen flickering/tearing
Borked, even with TFix
Game boots up and displays the EIDOS intro video but then it crashes afterwards. I made sure that VC++ 2008 and the directx redistributable from the TFix thread were installed. I also tried the lgvid.dll fix mentioned in the thread, and added a dll override for it, but it would still crash at the same point. Tried WINED3D and Proton 4.11 but still no luck.
I did, however, select not to install the graphics changes in the TFix installer that change parts of the game to be like Thief 2 - I doubt this would be the cause of it though. I think it must be some issue with mesa drivers? I'll test again at a later time.
Experienced worse performance with D9VK and some audio crackling
I did not test Final Cut (performance was too poor for me). Native version of original version is borked, and will crash either during boot or when trying to start the actual game from the menu.
