Newest version of ProtonGE fixes the intro audio. It is still recommended to use the atfix file located here: https://github.com/doitsujin/atelier-sync-fix/releases/tag/v0.5 Follow the instructions, and the game will run at 60 fps. In the launcher, I turned off bloom. It may help with increased performance, but usually the series has a really bad bloom quality, so it should graphically look better without it. All other settings left untouched.
It probably could run without GE. Atelier just does better with it. The atfix isn't needed anymore. Got stable 60 fps while in combat and exploration.
Game works OOTB.
Controller does not seem to want to remap in the launcher. Though it works fine in game. Perhaps use Steam Input to do the remapping instead.
Aside from weird control schemes (if you are on controller, press A at press start. it's a weird choice), this game runs fine, and managed to beat the first level with no crashes. The game will always use a launcher, so for Steam Deck users, this will be a heads up.
The changelog in the beta listed this game among others getting a fix. It's a 1:1 experience with Windows now.
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% -dev -mod EasternFront -w 1920 -h 1080 -nomovies
Changing the resolution or graphics settings causes the game to break. Set resolution with launch options, and use resets to get graphics settings if needed.
Crashes when match starts if on older version of Proton. Stay on latest build.
For Nvidia users, use the Nvidia Control Panel to enable Threaded Optimization for better performance and stability. Make sure that screen edges are off if you're on KDE Plasma to not interrupt the game. I also included options for 1080p (You can set your own resolution), the ability to load Eastern Front mod (Use this for the base game), and the ability to skip the intro to hop in the game. These are mostly optional as long as everything before %command% is included.
Once you tinker with setting the game to Proton 8, and fix the button prompts, it's not bad.
The game does not use controller prompts, though it can detect a controller. Follow the guide to use Xbox 360 prompts.
For the guide included, make sure to change the default.ini path to your game directory, since by default, it was intended for Windows. Make sure that the game boots with the config UI, then launch "LaunchDW8.exe" from there and add the "Xpad.tpf" as your package when prompted. If everything is followed correctly, the game will show Xbox360 prompts rather than keyboard + mouse if you prefer a controller. You might need to remap the entire controller if A and B being swapped bothers you. The game doesn't swap rebinds in the menu, so choose your layout accordingly. The game still requires a key press for the start menu for some reason. Hit space for something.
As before, this game does not run on the latest version of Proton. You will be met with a black screen. Switch to Proton 8.0-5 to get the game running. All audio and cutscenes work properly.
Works OOTB. Just ran one match.
The only gripe I might have is the lack of resolution choices in-game. This can be mediated with setting them through launch options.
Game is playable.
Controller buttons don't show up in-game. Uses KB+M, but controller does work fine.
Steam's FPS counter states it runs at 60 FPS, though it definitely looks choppy. It could be the port though, but it feels very floaty to play.
Game crashes during first tailing mission
Opening cutscene and combat tutorial works fine, but as soon as the tailing mission starts, the game immediately crashes. Tried various versions of Proton, including GE, along with a few launch options, and had no luck before Denuvo gave me a 24 hr ban. Might continue looking into it, but have had no success to where I have to report a borked report.
Loaded in my old save just fine.
Game crashed upon exiting. Doesn't seem to be alt-tab friendly either.
No crashes or any artifacts I've noticed upon entering the game. Aside from closing it, which given I wanted to close it, doesn't make a difference.
Game works OOTB
No slowdowns or anything on max. Game is smooth as butter. Might get a few drops in Hawaii here or there, but otherwise, the experience is fine.
This report is in beta, which might still be using the old build from 2024. The game might be more optimized at launch.
VKD3D_CONFIG=disable_uav_compression %command%
Game crashes every 15-30 minutes for me. Could be GPU overheat, played on high. Framegen AMD crashes much faster.
Without the launch command, the game will be completely black-screened if you enable FSR. Not sure if DLSS gives the same results for Nvidia GPUs.
Besides the other notes, the benchmark does say I could run the game on high at 1080p, so the beta might still not be optimized. If Capcom decides to launch a demo based on the end result, it probably would be playable, but until then, probably wait for the game to be released if these bugs will be fixed.
Game works perfectly fine, same with Steam Deck.
Kind of a two-in-one for this. Tested this game about a year or two ago on Deck. Works fine on low. Might get a small freeze when entering space, but it goes away. On a regular PC, it's fine.

Cutscene audio is missing, launch option fixes it as well as switching to an older GE version
Cutscenes are missing, switch to GE
Cutscenes are completely borked on main Proton version. Switch to GE. Audio is broken, which reminded me of the same issue with the Persona 5 Strikers port. Use the launch option and an older GE version (I used 7-55, you might try GE-8 if you want.) to get audio working. Audio quality kind of sucks, though older Atlus titles on Steam in general have this issue. There's probably a mod for improved sound quality, but otherwise, the game works flawlessly.
Controller needs to be set up, but other than that, no game issues.
Controller may not be detected immediately. Use kb+m to switch the controller profile to match your configuration. For Xbox, 360 profile works great.
Works well with a few quirks, but not enough to take away from the experience.
Music goes missing when firing repeated weapons sometimes. There's also some loud sfx here and there in the main menu.
Couple shots looked missing. Might mess you up when lining up attacks.
Trying to start in Proton gave me an immediate crash. Thankfully Native works just fine.
Game works OOTB
Minor stutters during combat, but not enough to warrant any issues. Game was tested on max graphics, so if it bothers you, turn a few settings down.
Artifacting issues around launch are gone. All visual effects are now working as intended. You don't even need to use the GE version.
Game works OOTB
No tinkering needed. Was on GE due to a recent report, but wanted to try default Proton anyway. Game loaded in with no stutters. The only problem I might notice is long loading times (I'm on an SSD, so it should be very quick.), but nothing that prevents me from playing.
The series is known for cross-save data. I didn't have the first game installed to carry over my clear data, so I had a backup just in case to drop into this game's compatdata folder (./steamapps/compatdata/2668430/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Falcom) and drop a copy of the Kuro save in there. Folders should have Kuro and Kuro2 in there.
Game runs otherwise fine OOTB. Thanks Durante, for your hard work as always.
