For some reason, for game not to crash when alt tabbing, you should click on exit button, and when Game Management window is shown, then you can safely Alt-Tab.
Did this dozen of times, so far so good. :)

It runs fine as long as you don't try to alt tab while playing the game.
Alt tab causes some sprites to bug
The launcher and everything are working as expected. The only problem is if you try to alt tab while playing, it was causing me to get some problems in the sprites.

If you don't mind the slower loading times than on Windows, then it should be enjoyable.
Loading times when starting a scenario, new or from a save, are slower than on Windows.

Just a heads up
On laptops having display scaling set on percentage over 100% make launcher unable to access available resolutions. So, it just errors setting resolution on 1024 * 768 and crushing the game. Keep that in mind.
Runs much smoother and faster, but the Alt-tab issue still exists. Also videos still play in a small box in the top left.

Not being able to alt-tab out of the box is a real pain. Configuration was not easy to find support for.

Had to set virtual desktop using protontricks, explanation here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/v0aglb/virtual_desktop_with_proton_using_protontricks/
Starting a new game or loading a saved game can take >5 minutes.
If you're having trouble with alt-tabbing reducing the size of the game, you'll need to use protontricks to set Darkest Hour to emulate a virtual desktop. Follow the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/v0aglb/virtual_desktop_with_proton_using_protontricks/
The game runs fine, only issue is that the music abruptly cuts off after a few seconds and then the game switches to the next soundtrack.
The music only plays for a few seconds and then abruptly cuts off into the next track
If you escape from full screen using alt+tab the game and re-enter the game, it will either give a blank screen or will not display in the correct resolution
The aforementioned music cutting off abruptly and changing to the next track
Had to downgrade Proton to 4.2-9 otherwise the game would crash upon trying to play as a nation. Game now works flawlessly
Oh yeah! It's finally bug/artifact free. No more renaming launchers, no more prefix tweaking.
The game takes forever to load, but given the ton of files that it needs to read, it's acceptable
You may want to change your screenshot key if you're going to use the console(F12). As that is the only thing that makes the game look like a Picasso painting. Solution? Just Alt-Tab once or twice, it will fix itself.
Works perfectly out of the box.
Good experience
Graphics break if you alt tab while loading.
Unbearable savegame load times even with SSD, more than 5 minutes

played in Virtual Desktop, no executable renaming

No need to change the .exe now. Runs out of the box

You have to rename the Darkest Hour.exe to Darkest Hour Launcher.exe. If Darkest Hour Launcher.exe exists just rename it to something else. Resolution changes perfectly from the settings file. The game plays very good.

You have to rename the Darkest Hour.exe to Darkest Hour Launcher.exe to get the game to run, other than that the game runs perfectly

Renaming the Darkest hour.exe into Darkest Hour launcher.exe actually made the trick! No music playing. Rest of the audio working (this is the same as hoi2, for me). changing resolution in the cfg work as intended. I am not shure how to workaround mods installation since the game launcher is not working. Game is for the rest working correctly!

Used the same trick as with Victoria 2, renamed Darkest Hour.exe as Darkest Hour Launcher.exe. Haven ttried yet to play with graphic resolutions in settings.cfg.

never starts

he game does not work, it starts, but it closes soon after.

Won't Start

Nothing happens
