Fantastic experience with my Deck docked, playing on the couch. However, my controller mapping would work fine while handheld also.
Changed D-pad to behave as arrow keys, mapped A button to spacebar, mapped B button to Esc, mapped X to Shift. (NOTE: none of these changes are entirely necessary, as it's playable with just mouse controls mapped to a joystick.)
Experienced minor slowdown after playing the game for multiple hours straight. Slowdown disappears after restarting the game.
If the default control scheme was modified to match my mappings above, and the controls were shown as such on screen, this game could be Verified.

Launch the game and you will be welcomed by a black window with music
Launch the game and there is a chance you will be welcomed by a black window with music, if not then it will in a few seconds (this can be accelerated by repeatedly moving your mouse outside the window). Utterly unplayable due to the blackscreen. No proton version (tried everything 4.11-13 and above), no wine version, no lutris tricks have helped. Only the rendering part is broken the rest is not

run perfectly proton ge. default will freeze in few mins.
Apparently no need for any tinkering any more, works perfectly out of the box
Game works fine, if you're using an external controller, use the community layout "Hiragana Battle Xbox Controller" and things should work fine.

The game runs great on the Steam Deck when using Proton 7.0-4 from Stable and no need to change any configurations if you want to play this game at 60 fps and FSR does not affect the game performance at all.

none
protontricks 438270 winxp
blank screen if mode is not set to winxp with protontricks
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game seems to lag/hang every few seconds

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
slight slowdown every few seconds
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Screen is all black with DXVK
Use "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" if black screen is present

Proton-6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The screen and dialogues like to flash
Performance on the proton version is bad on 1440p, on 1080p it's slow, but not bad.
In order to make the game run faster, i changed the resolution to a smaller one, somehow that helps. It might be better to use the web version, located in the game's folder under the www folder, (it might be required to disable CORS block)
1/3 of the screen was not rendered properly as it would not display the transitions (like turning black e.g.)
If you Alt+Tab out of the game it would freeze after some time
Some Maps were really slow, others just ran fine
While certainly playable, the experience is not enjoyable, and there is a better method to play the game.
Required for the game to display graphics.
The right 2/3ds of the screen are tinted black, and any black screen effects only affect that side.
Some maps slow the game down significantly, becoming even slower in combat or while other menus are up.
To run the game with much better performance, In the game's install folder, inside the www folder, run the index.html file. This launches the game in your web browser, giving a massive performance boost. This can be bookmarked in your web browser for a convenient link.
As with others, I was getting the black screen with music despite the suggestions already made here. What did work for me was using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%. Everything seems to work fine now.
Left 1/3 looks inconsistent with the rest of the 2/3 during some cutscenes. Gameplay is fine.
During some cutscenes, the game is slow. But the gameplay is fine.
Launches on a Black Screen with Music
Launches on a Black Screen with Music
The launch options PROTON_USE_D9VK
and PROTON_NO_D3D11
are needed to fix a problem with the game's intro transition, where 1/3 of the screen fades in before the other 2/3. This fade effect doesn't seem to work properly without these launch options. Your final launch option string should look like: PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
During some cutscenes, performance tanks. But this is really only in a small handful of cutscenes and not during gameplay. It doesn't impact the game but it happens. Note that this doesn't strain hardware, the game just tanks in framerate.
Steam Overlay does not work. I don't know if this happens on Windows but it didn't work for me in this game.

With "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" as the launch options the game runs. The left part of the screen sometimes doesn't transition with the rest and stays black until the transition is over. Sometimes, specially during transitions, the game starts skipping frames. This is the 5.0 version of proton.

Only sound out of the box
As other reports have said, you need to configure the startup command.

With "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" the game runs. Sometimes 2/3 of the screen is black for a short time, seems like an graphical error in a loadingscreen. But the game still ist playable quite fine.

Still only black screen and audio working. Even happens when using PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1

Inconsistent frame-rate on some screens, but still playable overall.

with PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 it runs, only minor issue is a strange "shadow" which appears sometimes over the right 2/3 of the screen, and the game seems to be running slight slower than in win10, but neither are a dealbreaker

Out-of-the-box I only get sound, and needed PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 to get visuals as well. Still seeing a strange dark shadow over 1/3 of the screen sometimes, and characters movement appears slower than in win, but overall playable.

As the previous posts mentions, it doesn't seem to launch with Proton, but runs fine from the "index.html" file in the browser. HOWEVER, due to recent security fixes (addressing CVE-2019-11730), you have to set the "privacy.file_unique_origin" to "false" in about:config in Firefox to be able to play the game. After that it works perfectly as it used to.

Open index.html from installation directory in Firefox. Game not working in Chrome. When you try to run it via Steam, you only hear a music and whole screen is black. Anyway, game is playable under Firefox but you have to not clear www data on exit ;-)

It is working with known tweaks so far (installed wine 3.0 directly from store, and set to XP compatibilty trough wine cfg). I am running it with steam proton 4.2-3, mostly playable, only one issue i have: on some parts of the map (eg. the farm and the town on North) the game slows down incredibly, a battle after better to call a comic book instead. I could not make to work of steam FPS counter for more precise data.

Windows version has to be set to XP for it to work, and scene transitions (black fade-in/-out) only cover ~3/4th of the screen. Everything else seems to work fine.

Everything seems to be working.

Requires winecfg to set the Windows version to Windows XP, or you will end up with a completely black window and audio only.

Works fine with proton out of the box now

The steam version of the game itself doesnt run, however there is an HTML version in "/HiraganaBattle/www/index.html" that can be played in an internet browser. That version seems to be OS independent and works flawlessly, but I am giving the game a bronze since it is technically not the actual game.

Has to be ran with the index.html file found within /home/[username]/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/HiraganaBattle/www/index.html

Black screen, no audio, "app is not responding" pop-up.

Launches to a black screen - Title appears appropriately.
