Sometimes the game would crash (memory issue I believe), might not be Linux-related.

Works flawlessly out of the box.
It does work great out of the box, however, it is a very old game (sorry to people in their 30s). It was rushed to the shelves and it shows. To improve it, either install the community patch called Fallout Fixt, or even better, install Fallout 2 and a community patch letting you play Fallout in Fallout 2 engine - you can do it in 3 easy steps:
How to install Fallout Et Tu
I. Put everything in correct paths:
- install both games (Fallout & Fallout 2) via Steam
- download Fallout Et Tu, extract somewhere, cut the
Fallout1in2
directory - Steam: right-click Fallout 2 > "Manage" > "Browse local files" and paste-in the
Fallout1in2
directory
II. Extract data from Fallout 1:
- Steam: right-click Fallout > "Properties" and paste the following in launch options:
cd "../Fallout 2/Fallout1in2"; eval $(echo "%command%" | sed 's#Fallout/FalloutLauncher.exe#Fallout 2/Fallout1in2/undat.exe#')
- Steam: run Fallout 1 (it'll open
undat.exe
window instead) - paste the following path into the 1st input field (replace
deck
with your username if you aren't on Steam Deck):Z:\home\deck\.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout\MASTER.DAT
- click the EXPORT button, wait until done, close window
III. Make Steam run Fallout Et Tu instead of Fallout 1:
- Steam: right-click Fallout > "Properties" and paste the following in launch options:
cd "../Fallout 2/Fallout1in2"; eval WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" $(echo "%command%" | sed 's#Fallout/FalloutLauncher.exe#Fallout 2/Fallout1in2/Fallout2.exe#')
- Steam: start Fallout 1 (it'll run Fallout Et Tu)
Enjoy!

Works out of the box with no changes!
I made no changes - just installed and ran, and it worked as expected!
gamemoderun %command%
gamemoderun %command%
"/media/hdd/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Fallout/falloutwHR.exe" %command&
To enable the hi-res patch (which comes bundled with Steam edition and fixes resolution and scaling issues), open the f1_res.ini
file in your game directory and set:
- UAC_AWARE = 0
- SCALE_2x = 1
- SCR_WIDTH & SCR_HEIGHT to your screens resolution

installed Et tu mod
gamemoderun %command%

No probé con otras versiones de Proton. Esta me funcionó a la primera.
Runs flawless through Proton. Native Linux port available through Fallout Community Edition
Being an older game that has also been patched to work for Windows 10, it's no surprise that there's next to no problems running the game through Proton. Works well at 1080p with 2x scaling. In fact, alt-tabbing works better than on Windows. You can also play the game natively on Linux through an open-source reverse engineered port of the game. I went through an entire playthrough with it and it has a few bugs, but nothing that softlocked me. You can download it here: https://github.com/alexbatalov/fallout1-ce/releases but if you don't want to deal with the (few) new bugs then stick with Proton.

Doesn't support Linux natively so I figured I'd just give it a try with Proton Experimental and it seems to work just fine so far

It's an old RPG, crashes are expected.
Again, it's an older RPG, they were riddled with bugs, especially around quests.

The small issues mentioned aside, the game works smoothly.
Sometimes when starting the game it runs with low fps. The problems goes away when restarting the PC and opening the game right after.
Two crashes, both while exploring the map, during almost 30 hours of playtime.
Literally perfect

Works out of the box.
In widescreen resolution text is hard to read, 16:9 works fine.

Limit TDP but disable FPS limit for smoother perfomance.
Problems with unAlt-Tabing but it's the problem which not related to SteamOS / Linux.
Very rarely (few times on the first entry to Raiders location)

You'll need to enable the hi-res patch and set scaling to 2x before you're able to actually manipulate the window at all. Other than that, this worked flawlessly.
If you're into this game, I'd recommend it. A bit tricky to navigate at first because previous posts say you need to download necessary patchers and files, but everything is provided in the steam download now.

Given that this game is a 90s game I feel to enjoy it someone would have to understand it isn't going to work on modern hardware.
"/media/hdd/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Fallout/falloutwHR.exe" %command&
File: f1_res.ini Set UAC_AWARE -> 0 Set SCALE_2x -> 1 Set SCR_WIDTH & SCR_HEIGHT to your screens resolution. :)
War never changes.

Better on Proton due to Instant Alt Tabbing
Game stops rendering if you alt tab while its paused. Simple fix, just click or move an item in the screen ur in, or ya know unpause. Applies to Windows aswell. THO if ur using proton on steam, it works much better as it doesn't resize ur native screen rez. Meaning instant alt tabbing. You'll likely play this in a resolution smaller then 720p, for context.
worked fine on desktop and deck, 0 crashes from start to completion
absolutely simple to setup and no issues to report other than a random crash here or there when trying to load a save.

while i played though the whole game with the problems i experienced, i don't think it would be that enjoyable an experience for everybody
known crashes when saving and loading during combat (also happens on windows, soooo...)
it freezes for a few seconds quite frecuently, unfortunately :(
still a good game, tho. i'd give it a shot

Flawless (Linux Mint, default Steam proton (8.0-3 or Experimental)
Controller does not work. KB&M only.
KB&M only.
Plays fine
The game work quite well out of the box with very minor flaws that are not worth mentioning.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES='ddraw.dll=n,b' %command%
Played with the Fallout Et Tu mod installed and did a bunch of tweaks to the .ini files
If you have two monitors, the game might fullscreen on the wrong one.
Plays as intended, just don't forget the dll override if you plan on using ddraw.dll

Works alright, classic Fallout.
High resolutions are weird, but 16:9 does work
Sometimes just randomly crashes (for me at least)
It's a classic Fallout 1 experience, with what you'd expect with a 90s game running on modern systems.
Everything runs fine.
Nothing to complain about.
Game launches and is able to be played with no issues whatsoever. Just took a minute to boot on first start-up is all.

Runs perfectly OOTB.
Game runs with zero issues OOTB.
very pogchamp cuz no tinkering
Screen tearing appeared at the lower default resolution but was fixed when I upped it to my monitors 2560x1440
Actually never ran vanilla on my Deck. Installed Fixt by adding the installer as a non-steam game, ran it w/ Proton 7.0-1 to install in Desktop mode. Then added f1_res_Config and repeated same steps with as before with both and checked 2x (This is if you want the hi-res texture mod, changing the window resolution breaks it because the virtual keyboard doesn't play nice). Last added FALLOUTW exe's to Steam and ran it in Gaming mode, it wouldn't work in desktop mode for me.
Couldn't play in desktop mode
Crashed when setting a lower screen resolution
