Dvd Install Script. You may need to install corefonts too.
You need to patch it to 1.7, otherwise friends won't show, nor will it tell you that you're running an old copy of the game. There's 6/7 patches, look em up. There's an unofficial all in one patch, you can try. Patches are as follows, 1.0.1017, 1.2, 1.2-1.3. 1.2-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.7. Guess you can skip the 1.2-1.3 one. They extract VERY slowly, dunno if wine issue.

Btw, hackers mc hack. Look it up. This report is for the dvd copy, dunno if thats not allowed on this site, oh well. The game has SafeDisc drm for SP/Coop, which cannot run on Windows 10 or 11. For Vista/7/8.1 you have to enable safedisc support. Obviously won't apply to Wine or the steam copy. Safedisc works on wine, just remember to mount the disc. Cdemu exists if you get tired of leaving the dvd in the drive. Just make sure you clone it with some software that captures the safedisc bit of it. Alcohol 120% works, tho I haven't looked for a linux alternative.
\\
Plutonium uses its own exe's (whatever that means). To get plutonium to work I had to use a 8.x version of wine, 9.x refused to work. Use this guide, look at the winetricks part. https://forum.plutonium.pw/topic/33563/playing-waw-plutonium-on-linux-using-wine
You should probably consider using that instead of the vanilla client, look up something something hacker cod waw. Maybe if ur experienced in wine you can prevent them from doing anything, step 1 remove the z drive from the prefix. To be specific I'm using wine-ge-8-25 on lutris.
\\
Mp is drm free (not steam copy), so no issues there. Well other then script kiddie hacks.
\\
Mods - Most mods are an exe install for some reason. they install in drive_c/users//AppData/Local/Activision/CoDWaW/mods/
guess you can create an folder junction or however you please. ur username will be steamuser on steam. that plutonium stuff might have its own folder you can use, haven't used much of it besides playing vanilla maps. Maybe in the future.

Might want to install corefonts as mentioned ealier. I'd have to reinstall it to find out.
Item Highlight may not work
The item highlight doesn't seem to work properly on the linux copy. Works fine on the Windows copy.
Better on Proton due to Instant Alt Tabbing
Game stops rendering if you alt tab while its paused. Simple fix, just click or move an item in the screen ur in, or ya know unpause. Applies to Windows aswell. THO if ur using proton on steam, it works much better as it doesn't resize ur native screen rez. Meaning instant alt tabbing. You'll likely play this in a resolution smaller then 720p, for context.
(played the demo) The game will attempt to install Microsoft Visual C++ runtime for you. But on next boot the game won't recognize it as being installed, thus it'll rerun the installer. If you select no, or cancel it, the game will simply close. Your only option is to uninstall, which then lets you run the game. Still runs fine without it, next boot install it again. I didn't care to tinker with it to avoid this.
Also it runs like a typical modern UE game sooooo. i mean maybe, it was something to do with proton.
Fonts may not render correctly. K's look like <'s for example. Simple fix. Install corefonts, lucida, and tohoma to l4d1's wine prefix. Lucida console is used for the console, tahoma is used for chat. Should fix most of it. Or you can replace the font by editing the sourcescheme.res or chatscheme.res files, they are loose so dont need to unpack a vpk. "winetricks corefonts lucida tahoma" copy paste to l4d1's wine prefix or use protontricks.
Alt tabbing and letting the map load while alt tabbed will break certain transparent textures, like fences and decals. Alpha clip textures, not translucency. Also had this happen to me on windows but its very rare on that platform. I've gotten it to consistanlty happen by alt tabbing. Next map load willfix it.
Freezes when alt tabbing for a second then resumes. On windows fullscreen would freeze it forever so whatever. Also the above problem may go here instead, I suppose.
Other keyboard types don't type properly when in game. They do work in the main menu console. игддірше, will show up as ????????. Typing outside of the game and copy pasting will work.
It likes to grab servers from peru! open the server browser, find a low ping empty server, copy the ip. mm_force_dedicated_servers to force the lobby to use that server. Also an issue on windows, used to not happen.
I noticed my ping for local servers displayed as a 1. Usually its a 5. Not sure if this is somehow because of linux, or a difference with L4D1 over 2. I'll have to test further.
Vocalizer Mouse Issue. Firebullets render bug/possible crash. Workshop Addons load instantly. Better Font/Character Suport.
Fire bullets may trigger a rendering bug that causes a lot of objects, mostly static ones, to stop rendering. It's likely to crash soon after too, but not always. Next map load will reset it (assuming it doesn't crash). Doesn't happen in the Windows copy. Haven't tested mac (ur welcome to). If you'd like to, load the first sacrifice map in survival. Shoot the tank while its coming out of the tanker with firebullets. (theres some by the spawn)
On startup it changes your monitor's refresh rate to 23hz (lowest possible?) Add -refresh ### to launch settings to get around this, so -refresh 144. -refresh 60. etc.
You may want to consider adding -vulkan, too. (Unless you want OpenGL)
For the Linux build, note that the mouse cursor doesn't reset to the middle of the screen when using vocalizers. Which may hamper your ability to use it efficiently.

So here's an interesting difference between the Linux and Windows builds. In the menu you can disable/enable mods. That filter list is only used after it's able to check if your subscritions all are all to date. On Windows, it filters them all OFF by default. Whereas Linux, filters them all ON by default. This also has the consequence of requiring internet for the Windows copy to load them. Obviously, you could just move them to the addons folder.
|-----------|
If I were you, I'd install the important mods using gameinfo.txt. Addons have higher prority over workshop addons, which might not be the behavior you'd want. gameinfo.txt, vpk. I'll let you figure that out yourself, as this is something best left ot a modding tutorial. Do it for sprays, too, as it likes to replace the ones in the main folder.

Game is also able to load special characters like an 🐾, or emojies. Windows users will see them as missing. So there's that.
