Create portal_knights.cfg
in the game directory and fill in the content according to https://pastebin.com/R7qC2ck3

Works perfectly out of the box, no need to mess with proton versions and config files.

Need to create a file "portal_knights.cfg" blank in the installation path so it launchs without error
Proton 5.13 + portal_knights.cfg
Plays perfectly and with good battery life (in a Large universe). Great Deck game overall.
The game didn't generate a configuration file (if you need one ask me on discord KiAMrt#7889) , also it wouldn't start unless using GE's custom proton version, after that it run flawlessly
Crashes every few hours
Reduced graphic settings by one step. Most are on Medium
now.
Supports controllers officially, no customization needed. You only need to open the keyboard manually (Steam + X) when entering names for new characters/worlds.
Highest graphic settings were set by default and worked fine.
Opens to an invisible window that covers the screen. Borked.
Modified using 'tips' from comments.
Found no issues
Runs without any issue.

Doesn't work even with the fix suggested
Upon launching the game will complain about the graphics card not being compatible with DirectX11. It will generate the cfg file but when changing the api field value it will just give the same error and change the api value back.
I used the mentioned fix to create manually portal_knights.cfg,
Had to use a older version (5.13) of Proton. Couldn't get it to work with the latest 6.X version. Had to tinker with the .cfg like others mentioned before. With 5.13 Proton the game created the .cfg and all I had to do was to change graphics to vulkan from dx11. After that the game runs smoothly without any issues.
Would not run out of the box.
only 1 crash after 4 hours.game runs well in terms of frames.
changing window on full screen freezes the game and almost crushing
a crash after 4 hours of gameplay
Apart from needing to edit one line in the config file it's plug and play. Great experience
Launch game, no window. Exit game, go to install folder and open generated portal_knights.cfg. Edit "api" entry to "Vulcan", start, have fun
Worked like a charm, even created the portal_knights.cfg file on its own
Just needs that Vulcan text put in the API line of the the .cfg file.
Workaround required
As mentioned by others, I've had to create portal_knights.cfg in the game directory and copy the contant from https://pastebin.com/R7qC2ck3 to start the game.
Installed just fine and launched no issues. Even hosted Remote Play for a Windows user just great
Crash when alt-Tab
Need a work around : "You just have to create empty "portal_knights.cfg" file in game directory, run game once, and then edit "api" line from DX11 to "Vulcan" in the same file"
You just have to create empty "portal_knights.cfg" file in game directory, run game once, and then edit "api" line from DX11 to "Vulcan" in the same file
Imported portal_knights.cfg from Windows environment.
It's a shame. This game could be a Platinum, if not for a strange bug that prevents the creation of the file portal_knights.cfg at launch, hanging the game on a dummy window. To solve this issue i had to import portal_knights.cfg from my Windows enviroment, since creating a dummy .cfg file, as suggested by other users, didn't worked for me.

Tried some workarounds, but still borked for me
I started the game several times, deleted winepulse.drv, added PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1, but nothing helped, the game won't start. I got only a yellow mouse cursor for some seconds.
Tested only singleplayer, from island 1 to 3. No visuals on first launch. Fixed after relaunch Smooth gameplay. Tested with pad and keyboard
Removed winepulse.drv*

The performance is a meh, in Windows runs Ultra at 60FPS in 1080 but here runs 30 in medium.

It runs using Wine D3d11, but has horrible performance issues. Getting 15-30fps when I shouldn't have any problem reaching 60. Tried any number of CPU and Nvidia prime / optimus tweaks including disable all CPU vulnerability mitigations. Nothing improved the performance.

Black screen on first start. After closing no problems

Still borked for me, tried some workarounds mentioned here but it didn't help.

For me this game never worked so far, I see only the process running, but nothing happens, no game window is visible.

If you are getting "Graphics System could't be initialized" use PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% in launch options

On first start, the screen was black. After restart, seems to be working.

I've play this for several hours and also tested the multiplayer and all works nice and out of the box!

As of 4.19.20-1-Manjaro on MESA with a Vega 64 it just works

Used xact and native xaudio2_7. I launched it multiple times without getting a window. Eventually I figured out that the config wasn't being created, so I made a blank one using 'touch "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Portal Knights/portal_knights.cfg"'. After the next run with no window, it filled out the config and ran fine after that.

The game works perfectly except for an issue I had with the controller that caused the game to crash upon spawning (there were no problems whatsoever using mouse and keyboard, but a controller is required for split screen). The problem was solved by setting Steam Input Per-Game Setting to "Forced off".

Doesn't work out of the box
