Install Lavfilters for videos to work.
TDP 5
Download lavfilters using Protontricks. Use ProtonUp to install GE-Proton7-55 for all videos and sprites to work well.

A typical gamer on linx would, it was some very minor setup and only has to be done once.
Use protontricks to install lavfilters, it allows the video files to play correctly.
In the launcher the drop down menu to select which monitor you use doesn't seem to work. So if you use a 16:9 then you won't have any issues, if you use an ultrawide like then there will be black bars. (Which is why I wanted to use the second monitor (16:9) in the drop down menu however it doesn't work.) So if you're also running ultrawide and want it on a second display just use windowed. But if you maximise the window it will displace the cursor, which can be manageable as all the menus can be navigated via keyboard anyways.
You can play most of the game without tinkering, however some movies won't play if you don't.

It works well if you use proton ge 7-55.

Audio that is played during a video cutscene will stutter.
A few notable instances where the game will show some sort of a placeholder test video to replace an object in a cutscene/story; Video cutscene is a stuttery mess, and you have to let it play to continue through the story.
In windowed mode, clicking the maximize windows button will make the game freak out and mess up the cursor placement related to the game UI. When starting the game in fullscreen mode, the system taskbar will be on top of the game until the game is minimized and switched/focused to again.
The game will sometimes show 3D model/asset during gameplay and some of it can slow down my PC.
The stuttering video cutscenes makes some part of the game unenjoyable, you have to let it play to continue through the story.

install lavfilters
Some videos are laggy.
Install lavfilters to play videos. Without the launch option, OP have no sound. It seems that switch to GE-Proton7-18 can solve video laggy problem, but it makes OP have no sound.

restoration patch can be downloaded, but the installer cant install to the defult steam install. you will need to copy your install elswhere where the restoration installer can install to, then move your game install back to steam. proton before 7 does not work proton after 7 does not work
The unofficial ReTranslation patch also works and can be installed via Protontricks.
Proton 7 makes the game finally work, and it seems to work perfectly fine.
No worries, works well!
Working perfectly as of Proton 7.0, videos & FMVs play without patches!!
If you patched your game's installation using winetricks, it's recommended to uninstall & reinstall since it works with Proton out of box now.
Proton-6.19-GE-2
Works fine with proton-ge. Have not noticed any of the issues mentioned here.
Sprites and textures that are missing can break the immersion of the moment. It works, but not too well to be fully playable.
Sprites/Images are missing. Replaced with placeholder SMPTE like colour bars.
3D animations are a little slower than expected

Did not run in current proton at all, downgrading allows the game to boot but it doesn't go through the first scene.
Tried adding ffdshow, quartz and other stuff mentioned here but wasn't able to make it work.

6.8-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Freeze on first video, despite installing quartz and ffdshow
WINEPREFIX=/home/$USER/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/326480/pfx winetricks ffdshow quartz
The VN launches and works as normal until you get to the first movie opening. It then crashes with an exception.

Game crashes on opening the savegame menu. Might've been caused by the ReTranslation patch.
Installing recommended DLLs didn't fix that particular issue.

Tested the first few minutes of the game. Successfully got past the first video after doing WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/326480/pfx winetricks ffdshow quartz and selecting everything that had 'av' in it's name, as one of the other reports suggested. Performance is great.
Crashes at first video. Tried using winetricks to install codecs for video but with no success.

After running WINEPREFIX=/home/kdb424/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/326480/pfx winetricks ffdshow quartz and enabling all video and audio codecs in the installer, seems to work fine. On my window manager, I also set to display in a virtual display to bypass tiling issues. Works great after this.

Game starts then crash when the first video is reached.

Runs perfectly, but a "this environment is not supported" error appears at startup.

Game starts, but crashes every time in the same moment

No problems

Requires a 32-bit prefix with the following workaround to work with vanilla wine: winetricks -q devenum quartz wmp10. It won't work with steamplay as it doesn't support 32-bit prefixes yet. There is an alternative approach that involves re-encoding videos, but I wasn't able to get it to work: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=30779
