Just as simple as normal, install and play. Also auto-recognizes PS5 controller when plugged in!

Game runs perfectly the first time in my experience, no hiccups!
Experience the best horror game on the best OS!

environment variable MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT_FORCE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=1
borderless window initially filled more than my screen. But going to Settings and switching to Fullscreen fixed it.
Originally the game would start up very slowly and the main menu would run at like 3 FPS, and my controls were very delayed / unresponsive.
Turns out the game was selecting my integrated graphics instead of my GPU. Wanted to publish the fix a nice user of the Heroic Games discord gave me. I added the environment variable: MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT_FORCE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=1 to force the game to select a specific GPU. Yours may be different. Check by running "inxi -SMGxx" in terminal, and seeing which GPU is listed as which. And using the Device-number but minus one. Mine was Device-2, so I used the value 1. Hopefully fixes the issue for others.

The Hair of the Girl and maybe other Characters have artifacts.
The tankering is only nessecery, if you have an iGPU with extra dedicated Graphics Card or/and eGPU. To find your GPU ID, you need to install vulkan-tools with the command: "sudo apt install vulkan-tools" and the use the command: "MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=list vulkaninfo" to show all of your Graphic Card and the ID. Thanks to Bonk

Worked without issues on my two setups
Played the game in its entirety without needing to change anythjing Proton-wise on my side, just the default latest version, on both my setups. Worked wonderfully, didn't experience the microstutters many people talk about on the Steam forums, only stutters I got was when loading a new area, and even then.

casual frame drops but i think its the same in windows, it feels it is loading stuff in the background
at first game was not launching, im a linux noob but a friend and i found out that proton has to be installed in the main hard drive, if you installed proton in another partition game will never launch, after installing proton in the same partition as steam just restart steam client and game should launch, game is VERY demanding.
Якщо ви не надто вибагливі і гра в +-30 кадрів не є проблемою, то в цілому можна грати без негативних відчуттів

Was experiencing extreme slowness on the loading screen, but this was resolved after updating my drivers (for Linux Mint, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
and then restart and use Driver Manager).
The other tinkering steps I tried may not be necessary, but I didn't touch them after it started working. Performance was excellent on my system!

It works. Bad performance. It's bad even in Windows.
This game has problems running on Windows even. Directx12 even without Ray Tracing performs worse than under Directx11, still talking under Windows. So under Linux it's the same or worse.
If you run it with directx11 api (-dx11) or have high end cpu/gpu it won't be a problem.

Runs about as expected with my setup. The one real bugger is that the Ultra+ mod doesn't seem to work (PM me if you did get it working)

Playable at around 30 FPS. GE-Proton, low settings, FSR 3.1 Performance, HDR off, FPS limit to 30, etc.
SteamDeck=0 %command%
This is (by my definition) just barely playable. Barely. You'll get frequent traveral stutter, slideshow combat, and it won't look pretty. However, someone who isn't bothered by playing in the 20-30fps range may be able to enjoy the game. If the Steam Deck is your only way to play games, then you'll be able to get this working enough to experience Silent Hill 2 -- though I highly recommend it on a decent rig.
The two settings that made the biggest difference were GE-Proton and the Steam Deck launch command to get FSR 3.1. Without them, acceptable performance is nigh impossible.
MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=[id here]! %command%
When using a laptop connected to external monitor, the game always switches to the iGPU after compiling shaders. MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT can be used as a workaround. In a terminal enter "MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=list vulkaninfo" (without quotes) to show selectable devices. Note the discrete gpu id, which looks something like "10ee:248". Paste the id with the following launch command: MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=[id here]! %command% . Do not paste the [] brackets. But do include the exclamation mark following the id, which is used to force your selection.

Fully playable, finished on Linux
the game is just very unoptimized

Game runs okay out of the box. After setting the dx11 flag, it runs very awesomely. Stutters occur but not from graphics it is when loading a new area in the background or something like that. Doesn't bother me too much, I think the windows version does the same thing.

PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=0 %command%
Forcing FrameGen=On
in the GameUserSettings.ini
file can be done, because it can't be enabled while in-game from the Settings Menu as its locked out for some unknown reason. Despite having this set Enabled and On, and ensuring
[SystemSettings]
r.FidelityFX.FI.Enabled=1
is set in both the Engine.ini and GameUserSettings.ini file, it doesn't seem to make a difference, it still can't hold a stable framerate above 30, and will drop to 15 FPS on a very capable RTX 3070 card that can deliver over 200+ frames. I think the poor performance all comes down to CPU utilization isues, they're not very well optimized for consumer desktop CPUs.
Can't hold a stable framerate above 30 despite setting Unlimited or 60 FPS in settings. It will only ever run at 30 FPS and above when in a game menu. This is a game that's optimized for Console first, and PC second, but it's clear PC optimizations are bad.
Sometimes Unreal Engine will crash on first load.
If you can somehow get the game to run stable above 30 FPS and at maximum framerateit would be fine. Even if you can edit the config INI files it doesn't make much of a differenc in performance. Perhaps this will run better with AMD CPUs with more cores than Intel CPUs.

It keeps choosing iGPU over dGPU(in the graphic settings, the resolution option is only one titled: no option data
) and I had to either disable iGPU from BIOS or use Lutris to force dGPU. Also, there is a slight lag every 2-3 seconds no matter what graphic settings are enabled.
No matter which graphic settings you choose, it has a slight lag every 2-3 seconds. I also tried to disable kernel.split_lock_mitigate
but no luck.

Performance problems made it very hard to stay immersed
Hair textures were stiff for some reason even on highest settings
Significant frame loss and jittery gameplay, lots of screen tearing even with windowed/fullscreen modes
Crashing only happened on game launch and worked on second or third launch with no changes on my end

After a couple of optimization patches, this has gone from an unplayable single-digit framerate to performing very well throughout the entire game with only minor visual artifacts a few frame drops in certain locations. Played on low graphics and proton experimental, but switched to the default proton version for some of ng+ and the performance loss is pretty negligible.

Using FSR 3 Quality and Frame Generation with low-mid preset, game becomes really smooth.

After reviewing other posts here I figured to share something a bit more comprehensive.. You will not get 60FPS but you will get smooth gameplay and a reasonable experience. This is for SteamDeck LCD - not OLED - you might have access to HDR options in the OLED model.

Save your changes and start the game. Before playing to into settings and change the graphics settings as follows:
Frame Generation: On Supersampling: FSR 3.1 FSR 3.1 Preset: Quality Render Quality Preset : Low
Occasional drops below 30FPS but nothing that makes the game in playable.

The game is unplayable even on the lowest settings. The problem seems to be software side rather than hardware because my hardware is relatively decent
The game is literally unplayable, 9 fps even in the cutscene no matter what optimization methods I tried
Dissapointed

It has optimization problem like in the first time played it only giving me a 40 fps, and drops alot. But, there is a fix named "Silent Hill Essential" that really helped me out and now fps is more stable. Check out my testing : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ozyWCpibxA&t=31s

launch it with -dx11 launch option on steam. then turn RT off, and TAA to off in advanced settings. everything else can be high. this is the best quality setting I found at 1440p. my framerates are ranging between 40 - 60 fps

Straight up OOTB experience
Considering my setup, it's an OOTB experience.

Game is pretty demanding on the hardware, and there are stutters, but they seem to be also on Windows, not specific to Linux. Also, I used Ultra Plus Mod for my playthrough, but in my case, it seems to actually worsen the fps after testing it a bit. Might depend on the hardware.

I've started the game without even setting any proton version specifically on this game. Just GE-Proton 9.20 on the whole library/Steam. Started, played from start to the appartments without any issue. Wonderfull game and wonderfull Linux compatibility!
Runs like native. No issues experienced.

Crashed when playing for longer than 2 hours.
Game was stable for me @ 35fps with v-sync off. Running with dx11 improves performance. Be sure to try out the various performance fixes available on Nexus until you find one that works on your system.

Given that proton-cachyos is pretty much the standard Proton version in the Distro I'll see this as a non tinker report
Since CachyOS has the DLSS Frame Gen fixes already applied the HUD is prone to heavy ghosting. It's amazing that we have Frame Gen now, but isn't fully there yet. Just deactivate it and you are good to go!
Game runs also well with normal Proton. GE-Proton and - in this case - proton-cachyos will just give it that extra boost in performance. It basically feels like a native game: Easy plug and play. Love playing it under Linux on my big rig :)

Using this performance mod https://www.nexusmods.com/silenthill2/mods/42
Locking power at 15W
Using the lowest in-game settings 1024x768 with TSR set on low, linear upscalling (theoretically FSR 1.0 should work better but not in this case). Foggy street areas run decently (stable 30fps). The Nexus mod improves the framerate insignificantly. Same as the less complex interiors. But anything with heavy folliage and lighting effects borders between the slideshow and playbility (~15-20 fps). The Forest, Rosewater Park, second half of Hospital, Toluca Prison were the most tanking performance locations. I barely noticed any traversal stuttering issues. Could've been fixed in the latest patch. The game also runs very stably. Not once did I have a crash.
The game has a potential to even be veryfied on Deck just as Dead Space (2023). The Bloober themselves probably are aware of this by releasing an optimization patch with the Steam Deck in mind. So far it doesn't make a significant improvement, but I hope they won't stop there.

Frame Generation has some issues. Sometimes the framerate will be lower with frame gen enabled, or the game will freeze to a still image until frame gen is disabled. Once frame gen was disabled there was no bugs during my playtime.
The game runs okay, not great; But this is unrelated to proton, framerate hung around 100-150 depending on the area with frame generation off on mostly high settings. The game was very stable and didn't crash a single time during a 15 hour playthrough!
