Strangely enough non of the tweaks helped me initially, lots of crashing and could not start the game. After many reinstalls and 4.6.11 landing I was able to get it running by installing this protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
, and then using this launch option: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
.
First install some tweaks protontricks 200260 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
Then set these launch options and you are good to go.
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 %command%
Performance is very good, max settings with the 970 and rarely do the frames drop below 60fps.

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=75 gamemoderun mangohud %command% -skipintro -nolauncher -nosplash -useallavailablecores -high -nologs -winxp
Works very well, limiting frames to 75 since that's what my monitor supports.

It will work out of the box, I would recommend following the "Make your KOTOR playthrough more enjoyable" guide and installing the community patches and widescreen support.
Disable anti aliasing, otherwise some textures could be missing.
It worked out of the box, but like other people have mentioned you can tweak the .ini file to get it to display full screen. It is an old game and doesn't have many resolutions or 16:9, on Windows it requires other software to get it to display in widescreen, just mentioning because overall this game requires tweaking on modern systems.
fluidsynth -is -a pulseaudio ~/Music/WeedsGM4.sf2 & %command% ; killall -9 fluidsynth
To get the game to play perfectly you need to do 3 things as others have noted before:
- Update SDL2.dll to fix mouse input issue
- Install fluidsynth and run with game to play in game music
- Downgrade game to version 1.2.14 to remove microstutter issues
Be sure to check the community guides Fixing the Microstutter issues & Steam Deck: Get Music Working and Other Fixes for more in depth instructions.
I had to enable hardware mouse option because the cursor was not being shown out of the box. Other than it worked perfectly, great performance.

Major performance problems after the Final Frontier update.
