It's a quality remaster of legendary game from my childhood... I've heard it's still missing spectators chat though, which is a shame.
To play it, you just have to check Settings > Steam Play > Enable Steam Play for all other titles - worked fine with Proton 6.3-7.
To install game you have to start to stop and start it via Steam (by yourself) multiple times. It won't proceed once stuck without your intervention (in reasonable time). Ignore prompt for activation code you might receive - Steam will handle this, just close Ubisoft Launcher (or "stop game" via Steam if hung).
Ubisoft Launcher bundled with Steam will punish you with having to login then restart game/Ubisoft Launcher few times for it to start working. This is unrelated to Proton itself I think, but it's worth pointing out since game will not install without you doing the manual restarts once it hangs.
PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 DXVK_STATE_CACHE=0 %command%
In Fullscreen mode, once in 5+ hours of playing it after alt-tabbing it lost synchronization with curson (it would click on other place than indicated). Works perfect in Borderless Windowed.
Game stays "Running" after fully closing it, you have to manually stop it from Steam (likely launcher). Without tinkering, would start launcher update but fail afterward without custom launch options: PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 DXVK_STATE_CACHE=0 %command%
It only starts launcher, game immediately crashes with error (if it starts at all)
I've also tried Proton Experimental, Proton 8.0-4, Proton 7.0-6, Proton 6.3-8 and Proton 5.13-6, verifying game files, disabling DLCs. It used to work in past.
They've fixed it (in Steam Beta client)! ^_^ Game works now. Without Proton-GE startup video does not play (on Proton 8.0-5).
Steam Beta fixed issue preventing game from working 18 hours ago: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2563#issuecomment-1912792727 (comment ended up in Proton repository since there was a bit of shuffling who might be able to resolve issue I suppose).
Works great - no ProtonGE required since today (since 7.0.4 - would not start on default Proton versions before that)
Runs great... once you manually tinker with it to disable EAC; none of mentioned launch options or GE started game at all.
Disbled EAC (and closed option of online play) by doing the following:
- renamed start_protected_game.exe
- made a copy of elden_ring.exe and named it start_protected_game.exe
Very rare flickering to white
Disabled EAC (and closed option of online play) by doing the following:
- Renamed start_protected_game.exe
- Made a copy of elden_ring.exe and named it start_protected_game.exe
Looks solid, I hope it'll continue to work well! ^_^
They seems to have enabled EAC on Linux now (previously I had to tinker to launch offline)! I was able to connect to servers, see player's shadows and messages - I'll later share PvP/Co-op experience, did not get any of that yet.
Followed already written suggestions totalling to:
- Getting protontricks up: sudo apt install python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-venv pipx pipx install protontricks pipx ensurepath
- Getting protontricks requirements up: sudo apt install winetricks
- Downloading Mono libs listed at: https://github.com/redmcg/wine-mono/wiki https://github.com/redmcg/wine-mono/releases/download/wine-mono-5.1.1.2_ED/wine-mono-5.1.1.2_ED-x86.msi
- Clicked launch in Steam and let game fail according to guide.
- Run protontricks: protontricks -c 'wine64 uninstaller' 359320
- Within opened window - following protontricks guide: 5.1. Uninstall any existing version of 'Wine Mono Runtime' (by selecting it and clicking 'Remove') 5.2. Click 'Install...' and select wine-mono-5.1.1.2_ED-x86.msi
- Launch game - booted up in invalid resolution and on invalid screen - tweaking graphics settings and restarting fixed issue.
mkdir SteamLibraryPath/steamapps/compatdata/359320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Elite\ Dangerous\ Launcher_evidencehere
To my surprise it boots up/transition/runs significantly faster than on Windows, despite slower SSD drive (quad-bit SATA vs NVMe)
Same as with Skyrim - no NPC voices by default. This time I've skipped GE with no other changes (fearing super quiet NPC voices when turned away from them) and immediately went with custom launch parameters:WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
I've played slightly more than an hour now and after ~45 minutes slight cracks started to slip in - definitely something to tweak further.
To hear NPC voices and main menu music I had to use those launch parameters:WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
It would not work not matter how many variants of it I copied. It had to be typed manually, there must be some minor character replacement going on.
ProtonGE versions 6.18-2, 6.20-1, 6.21-2 would restore NPC voices BUT! they would be inaudibly quiet every time you'd turn away from NPC (worthless).
Skyrim is a masterpiece - and it runs great on Kubuntu 22.04.
Slow Time crashed game >once< when dragon was entering hover (animation become erratic then game hanged without any output).
This is an improvement when compared to few months ago when custom properties and ProtonGE were both necessary to have game work properly.
