I didn't bother trying a newer Proton given the other notes here, but version 5 works fine.
Would not launch with proton 7.0-4 - dropped the proton version down to 6.3-8 and it works fine.
Works perfect out of the box with a recent update thanks to active developer support
The game may not "officially" support Linux, but the developers are aware of Proton and Linux and took steps to get it working properly! However it appears you'll need to be on a more recent Linux version if you're on an Ubuntu based distro (Ubuntu 22+ should do it).
Other than a crash starting a Trafalgar battle, it seems to run perfectly.
One crash starting the Trafalgar battle (I didn't re-attempt it).
When running a local co-op server, the only problem is EXITING the game. Whichever window is shut down first exits fine, but the other turns to a black screen and can't be shut down without killing the processes. If you're quick it seems like you can alt-tab to the other screen after exiting, and still be able to shut down normally, but that's not always possible.
"Unable to start single player game"
Menu works fine until you go to start a new game, after which you get this "unable to start" message.
Very occasional freeze ups followed by a crash, usually not a big deal considering the game autosaves so often. No performance issues at all even at max graphics.
Correction to last report. Proton Experimental or anything newer than 7 don't seem to work at all - Steam thinks it's running but I don't even get a display. Version 7 of Proton works pretty well.
Can't recommend given how unstable it was in my case...
Sometimes crashes when starting combat, but not consistently.
Worked perfectly after switching to 6.3-8, including the launcher. Other versions didn't even show a launcher.
