Other than the windowing issue, everything ran perfectly out of the box.
Although I could window, it was stuck at one (fairly small) size only. Which was not ideal. I streamed the game and had to run it windowed, and missed some things as I could not resize to a more sensible size for my monitor.
Runs perfectly out of the box, except for the windowing/no alt tabbing stuff.
Could not window, only possible by forcing the winfeprefix for this game to emulate a desktop of a specific size, that opened the game windowed. Even so mouse gets captured and cannot alt-tab from window as with full screen.
Too much hassle reinstalling and replacing save for the typical gamer? Not the typical linux gamer though, I would imagine.
Could not play windowed
Controls on the native version bugged out halfway through my playthrough, which is why I finished the game using the windows version on proton.
Other than the small niggle with the mouse, perfectly playable and enjoyable.
Sometimes, when in zoom mode with an interactable object or inventory object, my mousecursor froze. Excitting and reentering fixed it every time.
Worked flawlessly start to finish
Some issues, but nothing game breaking, not frequent, and very playable!
Some outlining of water bodies, missing and odd water textures, frequent pop-in of items that realistically should already have been loaded and rendered (surrounded by properly loaded and rendered textures)
Sometimes on reload mouse input was not detected and game had to be forced shut down and restarted.
Occassionally the game would do something odd (in game jankiness, collission issues etc) and would freeze and need to be killed and restarted.
A LOT of collission issues, getting stuck in the world, falling through the world, people gitching through items or buildings or floors, etc. Usually the game would freeze and need to be killed and restarted.
Downloaded and installed from https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install as explained in many comments below. After that most of the game ran absolutely perfectly. The only problem I encountered were big, big stutters in the cutscene. Like 6 seconds of white screen and missing that part of the cutscene big. Thankfully those are on YouTube, but it takes it from Gold to Silver for me.
Runs perfectly, no tweaks needed as with previous proton version.
I encountered one crash in about 2-3 hours of play, on trying to exit the menu.
This is my second report. Adding this second one as I have since switched to a new, more powerful pc, and the proton update seems to have solved the previous sound issues.
Worked near flawlessly start to finish
No windowing without messing with winecfg, and even full screen window was tiny with a big black bar around it.
We had one instance of the input not registering and game needed to reboot to fix
Runs smoothly, no crashing, no input issues. Smooth sailing.
Can not switch from full screen to windowed. The option gets skipped in menu.
Started playing natively, but wanted mods. Mods are only available for windows, so I decided to run the windows version via proton and mod that. This works like a charm. Runs just as well as the native version. Zero complaints and other than the modding no tinkering was needed at all to get it to run perfectly.
Game not playable past the first half hour or so.
Game fullscreens itself whenever menu is entered and at random points in the game.
Game would crash within minutes of entering a particular area, reliably. Could not continue playing past this point.
Game could not be finished due to the crashes.
Some minor issues, but nothing gamebreaking. Perfectly playable.
Game froze/hung maybe 2 or 3 times over the entire playtime.
Game did not save settings, needed to redo my settings and soundbalance every time I played.
Everything ran fine right out of the box. No issues at all.
No sound at all using the linux native client, but running it via proton works like a charm!
Runs perfectly! Only problem I came across was that game crashes to desktop about 70% of times when resizing in windowed mode, but that's hardly gamebreaking.
Other than the windowing issue, ran flawlessly from beginning to end.
Couldn't window, solved by running in a wine virtual desktop at required desktop resolution. However, still grabbed cursor and unable to escape or alt-tab out.
window would frequently recenter itself in the middle of my screen when changing settings
Menu settings would show as ticked but actually been turned off, and had to be unticked and reticked. E.G. V-sync and brightness needed to be redone multiple times every playsession.
Ran fine overall. Very playable.
It felt very strange to move around, like there was 'resistance' some moments but not others. Sometimes the arc in which the mouse was moved needed to be larger than other moments.
Some random frame hangs/hickups. Maybe 4 or 5 in the ~75 minutes I played. Not a real issue.
I got stuck in a corner and could not move away or interact/shoot seeds until I restarted the game.
Worked perfectly start to finish.
I streamed this and took about 12 hours including chat interaction. The only crash experienced I think was meant to happen as part of the program and was in the demo. Otherwise pristine experience.
Window sometimes didn't grab mouse or suddenly lost mouse focus.
Some stuttering and a LOT of pop in.
To enable modding, specifically to make QModManager work, follow these steps:
- download qmodmanager zip (not exe)
- start steam
- install subnautica
- run subnautica
- $ cd [Steam Library]/steamapps/common/Subnautica/
- $ unzip ~/Downloads/QModManager\ 4.0.2.6\ (Subnautica)\ ZIP-201-4-0-2-6-1609866070.zip
- Steam -> Library -> Subnautica -> r-click -> properties -> General -> Launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp.dll=n,b" PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
- Run. should work (main menu, options, Mods <- should exist)

Practically flawless from beginning to end, except end crash, and none of the achievements triggered.
One crash at the end of the last cutscene that happened every time.
Played proton version as I had no sound in native build.
I played over 9 hours, finished the game, and had a grand total of 1 crash. Ran perfectly all the way through. No issues at all.
Could only play in a tiny window, or in full screen, but not resize the window
Didn't have to rename anything. No tweaks nessecary. Ran perfectly out of the box for me.
Primary issue with the game out of the box was the botched sound. First tried to just set the steam wineprefix to alsa (WINEPREFIX=/home//.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/702050/pfx sound=alsa) which worked for a bit but randomly bugged out again into crackling and popping static interference. Then decided to set back to pulse and follow another tweak, setting default-fragment-size-msec from 25 to 5 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf (need to restart daemon or reboot to get this to take effect). In addition, I set env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 in Steam launch options. These two things together give me mostly perfect sound. One or two lines every few minutes are a bit crackly, but it's very playable this way! Had some stuttering and one hard crash, after which I disabled esync as suggested here, and has run perfectly smooth ever since.
Cutscenes are just white screens and hang for a few minutes. Had to look them up on YouTube
The game grabs and regrabs the mouse when starting in windowed mode until you hit the main menu. It also keeps recentering itself on your screen until you hit main menu.
Physics bugged out twice, meaning item collisions didn't work propery anymore, doors no longer opened etc. Reloading a saved game fixed the issue.
I played the windows proton version because the game didn't have any sound for me in native version
Game starts, shows cursor and then immediately closes and crashes back to desktop
running in terminal does not give me any clear error codes to work with. Seems to be running fine and then just... stops. Going to attempt to refund as I have no clear route to troubleshoot currently.
Some niggles, but nothing game breaking. Very playable!
Some texture glitching, some lights flickered rather than were constant or were rendered in the wrong place. Again, nothing that made the game unplayable, just a bit more creepy sometimes :).
Slight stutters and framedrops that should not be there given my hardware. Nothing major though, very playable.
- Game would not exit upon exit, needed manual kill after every run.
- Game would start with an error code about 50% of the time. After continue, the full setup screen with settings before the game starts was blank and I had to reinput my options.
Run this game on my other GPU (AMD Radeon R7 M265) via DRI_PRIME. I can either run it without D3D11, in which case it runs fine in most places, but crashes to desktop in specific areas, or I can run with D3D11, in which case it doesn't crash, but runs at very low FPS in places, and some of the meshes and textures bug out, making part of the game very hard to complete. In either scenario disabling esync is helpful. Neither is ideal, but the game is playable if I switch between the two as and when and am very, very patient.
Ran perfectly start to finish. No tinkering required. Perfect windowing, alt-tabbing fine, no mouse grabbing. Couldn't ask for more!
Ran absolutely perfectly start to finish
Had to run the config program once before playing the game. Would not start without doing that first, but the config ran fine, and the game also ran perfectly after that.
