Runs way worse than on windows with the same pc configuration.
It's unplayable compared to running this game native on windows on the same pc configuration. On windows game runs at stable 60fps on medium settings. On proton tutorial map got decent framerate, but after teleporting to first big map game becomes unplayable because even on lowest settings possible I got max 13-15 fps here with gigantic input lag.
Because of low fps game don't allow to connect to online services.
Unlucky but out of the box game in unplayable. Btw it's not my first try running this game on linux on the same pc and even with a lot o thinkering I cannot get even half of the fps I got on Windows using the same pc. I have no idea why because other games I tried like Dark Souls 2 runs nearly the same like on Windows.
If game is unplayable on normal Steam try flatpak Steam. It gives me nearly 4x performance boost!
It's my 2nd report for this game. First expernience was really BAD, game was unplayable even with tinkering, protons GE, FSR etc. But now I found simple solution for most performance options.
I'm using EndeavourOS now but had the same problem on Kununtu and Manjaro. Game was unplayable with around 15fps on first big location.
So game runs this bad on Steam installed from distro repos. Just installed Steam from flatpak and it fixed nearly all my performance problems. Game now runs around 55-60fps on the same location. Yes it's that simple LOL.
There is a bug in flatpak version of Steam and you are unable to controll character, like keyboard and mouse dont work at all and you can only move camera and rotate your character around.
To fix this just create new Steam library folder away from flatpak Steam installation folder. Since flatpack is sandboxed you need to give permissions to steam to create this folder outside sandboxed environment or just create this folder inside sandboxed home folder then move game file here using built in Steam menaging library tool.
Now game runs only slightly worse than on Windows
I don't see any difference between between Proton and native
But since native version works really well I don't recommend using Proton here.
Works better in Proton than Native version
I experienced some graphical issues with native version but Proton version works perfectly out of the box.
With some minor fixes (change proton version and edit 2 lines in config file) it's completely playable for me
If you want to play in modern resolution you need to edit game config files. Find your Steam games location folder then open this file:
/Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/Conquests/conquests.ini
For resolution fix and auto skip intro video edit or add this lines at the end of the document:
KeepRes=1
PlayIntro=0
BTW it's something that you have to do on Windows too so I personally don't count this as a "linux thinkering step".
Some audio problems but I don't play games like this with sound so I instantly disabled audio in game so not sure if later on sound gets better/worse.
Game won't start native on linux without editing "Civ6" file under steam/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/. Change the line "./GameGuide/Civ6" to "./Civ6Sub"
Native version sometimes drop fps and works way worse than dx12 version on windows on the same pc configuration
Can't alt+tab while game is loading because game will crash
Even if native linux port is not the best game is still fully playable. I was able to finish one playthrough on huge map with few bots without any problems.
