I needed to install Feral GameMode and add gamemoderun %command% to the launcher for the game to stop crashing after a few hours.
That was solved after installing Feral GameMode and adding the arguments to the game's launcher.
For NVIDIA users, you can get even better graphics by using an application profile in the driver and adding "GLLogMaxAniso" "4" and "GLFSAAMode" "11".

Play well with Proton Experimental, but a lot of stuttering with any other Proton version!
LD_PRELOAD="$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/\$LIB/libgamemode.so.0" gamemoderun %command% +com_showLoadingScreen 0
I finished the game on Linux without any trouble. The command line in the Launcher is only there to get the last bit of performance from my system (with Feral GameMode) and to skip the videos at the start ;-)
Works out of the box on Linux. Finished it 2 times (first in full combat mode, than undetected) in a bit less than 40 hours.
As other stated before, it is a bit choppy at first on every new level because of caching, but it helps to make a 360° look around. When that is done, it's a very smooth gameplay.
Worked out of the box, with maximum graphic settings! I finished it in a bit less than 43 hours (without searching all the secrets).
Gamma settings didn't work and there was a warning when I started the game that my GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super) wasn't recognized and tested, but I could skip it and play without any problems.
As with MOW: Red Tide, the game worked out of the box, with maximum graphic settings.
I was able to play entirely this one too without problems at all!

Apart from the "safe mode" launch bug and some rare slowdowns, it was really a great pleasure to play it through again in Linux.
I tested different Proton versions, but each time I launched "Metro 2033", it fails to start and I had to launch the game again for a second time. Then a window asked me to launch it in "safe mode" (that was 1024x768) and I had to configure again the video option to 1920x1080. Then, it stayed like that for the time I've played...
Sometimes, explosions during fighting and pursuits in train brought some slowdowns that are not supposed to happen with my hardware. Otherwise, the performance was great. It could come from the DX mode, I chose the more recent available...
I hope that as me, you have a screen with a "game mode" (enhancing temporarily contrast + luminosity), because this game is dark and gloomy! Nothing to do with Proton or Linux, the devs wanted it like this : "it's not a bug, it's a feature" ;-)
Working flawlessly out of the box!
The game uses the default OS language and has no options to change it :-( so if you want to force it in english, you simply have to add "LANG=en_US %command%" to the launcher options :-)
Très bonne jouabilité sous Linux / Very good gameplay on Linux
2 ou 3 freezes de pilote graphique, mais j'ai fini le jeu + les DLC / 2 or 3 GPU freezes, but I've finished the game + DLCs :-)
Avec Cinnamon, il fallait parfois utiliser Alt+Tab au lancement pour avoir le mode plein-écran / With Cinnamon, using Alt+Tab was sometime needed to get fullscreen after launch. Dur à dire si les quelques freezes graphiques étaient spécifiques à Proton+Linux ou juste un bug du pilote NVIDIA / hard to say if the few GPU freezes were due to Proton+Linux or just a NVIDIA driver bug...
Fonctionne parfaitement sans tweaks / Works perfectly without any tweaks!
Performance with Linux worse than with Windows.
Changing keyboard mapping from QWERTY to AZERTY made the Settings appear 2 times and needed a restart of the game to be used.
With the same graphical settings (max) as Windows, the performance is far worse.
Great graphics, great gameplay, very enjoyable on Linux, but more troublesome to run on my PC than the previous Wolfenstein (The New Order).
Very random "Could Not Write Crash Dump" error, the same as with the Windows version. Most of the time, restarting the game is enough to get rid of it. One time, this wasn't enough, the error kept coming, so I made a new save right after the game started, left it and loaded the new save, and the problem was gone.
If you try to tinker with the advanced graphic settings, the game will work perfectly, then will be choppy for no logical reasons the next time you start it. So don't even bother loosing your time with that and if your GPU is recent, just select the highest preset and enjoy your game. And also, there is sometimes a video memory error prompt randomly appearing, just ignore it by clicking on "Accept", it doesn't matter at all. At last, there was a few times some kind of screen corruption that blackened progressively everything, restarting the game solved it
Great game on Linux, I completed it again, and the Freedom Chronicles too! Everything works well, but with a few caveats that I will sum up here:
- don't bother with the advanced graphics settings, just use the presets.
- ignore the video memory error prompt if it pops up.
- in case of the crash dump error, just restart the game. If it keeps coming, make a new save and start from it.
- in case the screen start to be entirely blackened, just restart the game (it happened just 3 times in my whole gameplay).
- Alt-Tab works OK most of the time, but it also crashed the game a few times.
Works perfectly out of the box!
Very fun game, I was able to finish the main story and all the nightmare levels without any trouble! Way more stable on Linux than Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus...
I was able to complete it on very high settings. Outside of a few random crash dumps, it worked out of the box, with good performances.
There was some occasional crashes with the game, but that also happens on Windows it seems, form the posts I saw in Steam's forum...
Just added +com_skipBootSequence 1 as a launch parameter, to get rid of those pesky unskippable videos at the start of the game.
