The game works beautifully if not planning to play on public hosted servers with BattlEye. Use arma3-unix-launcher to play with mods.
- protontricks 107410 --gui in Terminal
- winecfg
- Go to Libraries and added 'xactengine' & 'imagehlp'
- Download arma3-unix-launcher and launch the game.
Followed this video guide including Arma3 Unix Launcher for mods.

I tried to summarize the video but I possibly may have missed something.
Random cracking when playing and sometimes goes away.
I don't play on public BattlEye servers. I host my own dedicated server to play with friends BattlEye disabled.
The game launched perfect out of the box with all graphic settings default no NVIDIA PhysX. Running around the city, my frames was stuck around 50 and frequent stutter FPS drops. After reading a report, I decided to put these commands in launch options:
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 %command%
I don't know if that fixed my frame rate issue, or I just needed a game restart. Either way, the game should launch and run fine with or without these launch commands.
Forced Steam Play compatibility and launched it perfectly with Steam overlay disabled to prevent crashing when ALT-TAB.
Fullscreen option does not work. Only windowed or borderless windowed mode for display.
Not sure if certain maps and traffic AI (I set a limit of 2 cars) are resource demanding causing FPS to average around 30-50 is normal (80-90 empty scenarios). Only played on Linux via Proton so not sure if performance is improved on Windows.
I added PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% in Steam launch options. I also went to /steamapps/common/Borderlands 2/Binaries/Win32/ and renamed Borderlands2.exe to Launcher.exe by renaming the existing to Launcher.old. This was necessary to play multiplayer coop with my friend. When launching natively, it would say incompatible game version when trying to play with a friend. After that, the game ran smoothly.
Tried using Proton and did not work. Launching the game natively would launch to a black screen and close out after a few seconds. I saw to enter -nojoy launch options in Steam and worked perfectly. Too bad I can't use my Wooting keyboard with this game.
Perfect. The other stuff is no big deal for me. As long it runs at a high performance, I am happy.
Can Alt-Tab but windows behind game will not show up. Requires to META+PgDown the game to minimize back to desktop. Game is always 'stuck' in fullscreen.
The hex edit fix for ultra-wide 21:9 does not work for me. The black bars still show up on the side. I attempted to try SoulsUnsqueezed with no luck.
Works almost flawless out of the box without a few minor tweaks in-game without any hassle or editing game files.
Make sure to pause the game before ALT-TAB or else the game will return to a black screen and have to restart the game. Also, after exiting the game, Steam crashes/closes which is a minor annoyance.
I was using OpenGL(default) when the game first started. I was having frequent frame rate stutters about every 5 seconds with an average of 75 FPS. I switched to Vulkan and performance was at a consistent 100 FPS with no stuttering. Make sure to pause the game before ALT-TAB or else the game will return to a black screen and have to restart the game. Also, after exiting the game, Steam crashes/closes which is a minor annoyance.
Fun game to play! No tinkering around with any launch options or settings. Multiplayer and solo work perfect.
Launched game using Proton 4.11-9 perfectly out of the box. No need for special launch commands.
"Quit" game button in the menu does not close the game right away. I just ALT F4 to exit the game after saving it.
Can no longer play with keyboard+mouse after using a Steam Controller-Game still works as normal when launching through Proton.
A few weeks ago, I was playing only with a keyboard+mouse. Connected a Steam Controller and works fine. The issue is that I can no longer use keyboard+mouse to play because trying to move with any movement key on the keyboard, it would swap weapons and move the camera randomly.
I don't know if it is a bug with the game itself, but I am forced to play with controller now.
Steam Play works out of the box and no issues compared to native Linux version.
The native Linux version of the game launched fine but the resolution was stretched across the screen and was unable to access the settings button. I switched to Steam Play compatibility and launched normal on my primary monitor as expected.
Old game saves still there from the cloud when I used to play on Windows. Runs perfect out of the box with multiplayer co-op.
Annoying "crashes" or freezing of SteamVR Beta when loading to a new area of the game. Alternative is save before and restart the game.
Game would freeze computer or SteamVR with an error when loading save from game. Would load fine from main menu when first launching up the game.
Some locations would have stuttering but eventually go away
Loading to a new area would crash or freeze game.
The VR experience is just not fun with Linux. The performance latency or movement feels way better on Windows. Hopefully the experience will get better in the near future. For now, I am rebooting to Windows every time I want to play VR games.
There is now a native Linux version using Vulkan renderer. No need for Proton.
If you had installed the game through Proton previously, please follow these steps to correctly download the update:
- Go in the Properties for Half-Life Alyx by right-clicking the game in your Steam Library
- Check the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" box
- Uncheck the box, and the download will properly complete. Be sure to verify integrity of game files before launching the game to fix "Timed out waiting for response from Mongoose. SteamVR needs to be restarted"
Epic Game Store Crashes after Tutorial Menu
Downloaded from Epic Games Store via Legendary and tried to use Proton. The game launches fine but instantly crashes after trying to load tutorial.
After several multiplayer sessions, the frame rates drop randomly down to 10-15 FPS. Some times the game recovers back to 60 FPS but most of the time requires a restart to fix frame rates.
Some random UE4-error game freezes and eventually crashes.
Running with Proton Experimental and performance is good as on Windows.
I am on KDE Plasma and had to manually disable compositor with ALT+SHIFT+F12. Game did not disable automatically. Game felt locked at 60 FPS due to multiple monitor setup at 144hz in-game if I did not disable compositor.
I use PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% in recommendation from other reports just in case. Been playing for hours and no performance issues at all. I experienced a crash once in 4 hours of continuous gameplay. Also working perfect with my Wooting keyboard. Perfect!
General Steam Remote play issues not properly streaming the game. The only bad thing is needing a specific in-game item to play with a friend.
The native version for Linux is bugged and disables keyboard functionality. Had to use SSH or reboot computer to close the game. Proton works perfectly fine.
Activated Steam Play compatibility and just launched the game after it was done updating. No issues in game single player and multiplayer.
"DXVK_HUD=1 taskset -c 0,2,4,6 %command%" added this command after noticing my frame rate was hovering around 48-50 (still playable), and slight boost to about 55-60 FPS on low-medium graphic settings 3440x1440 resolution.
Worked out of the box. Noticed camera was stuttering when first picked up but went away. I enjoyed the game.
Native is nice
Have not tried out mods yet on native client yet. Played for 10+ hours on native.
Native and Mods work with R2Modman!
Recently started adding mods with R2Modman AppImage from GitHub. Just make sure to follow the instructions on start up and use R2modman to launch the game with mods!

Disabled VSync and set a frame rate limit. Stutters at first when running around for 5 mins and stabilizes.
