There's no cloud saves on this, so you will need to manually back up your saves.
Trying with either DXVK or D3D you'll experience poor optimization even if you bring the settings to the lowest
For the first bit, you couldn't get past the loading screen. Force the launch to D3D, and once you get shipwrecked on the island you can put it back to DXVK (at least when I tried playing for the first hour)
Note: this is mainly my experience trying to launch this on my system. When i played this on my Steam Deck, it was mostly OOTB, rather than the annoying Ubisoft password prompt.
Trying to play this game was literally so frustrating. I didn't even play this for a full first hour due to amount of annoyances that I was trying to deal with.
- For the first launch, it wouldn't get past the first loading screen, it would just do a hard freeze. Sometimes I would get lucky and it would actually go through and load the game properly. However literally during the introduction of the game (before the shipwreck), the game would just freeze. I thought at first it was since I installled the game onto my HDD, but I still had the same results when I transferred it to my SSD, and even changing the Proton option (7.05) yielded the same. The only way this was solved was editing the launch options to run with Direct 3D (D3D). After you get shipwrecked, I removed the D3D launch option and it was able to launch twice without any hiccups, however that still isn't even the worst part. When I went into Eagle vision, the game froze.
- Optimization is actually poor in this game, even when turning everything low. Now I can deal with the occasional dips and whatnot, but it was practically doing it every half a second.
- Annoying Ubisoft login.
I wouldn't recommend even playing this on the PC. Play it on the Steam Deck, or even just buy it used to play on the console, you'll probably have a better experience than what I had.
Click and start. No need for any tweaks.
Since, this is a new release, it could be mesa-git that's causing my system to occasionally freeze up. YMMV.
Valve was able to add support to this game on release date, with Proton 5.13-4, with the only requirements being that you have to be on mesa-git (21.0.0), and AMD GPUs are required. I suspect that this will change in the future, that we'd be able to use the stable branch of mesa, and that other users will NVIDIA GPUs will be able to play this as well.
I was able to launch and play on release date, no configuration/launch options required.
Although, I would take note of a few caveats, but YMMV:
For performance, on High, FPS average would be under 40fps, would stay between 30-40. Going on low settings would jump the FPS over 60. I suspect that since this is a new release, it will be fixed in the future.
Once every hour, the system would occasionally freeze up the system, causing me to have to do a hard shutdown. I suspect this is due to the mesa package, since I'm on the experimental branch (git), so once this merges to the stable branch, I suspect things will go back to normal.
(Note: protondb might say that my mesa version is on 20.0.3, I suspect that Steam's System Information is not detecting it properly. I am on the git version, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this report)
To enable the optimizations, add dinput8 (native and builtin) on winecfg's libraries.
The user will have to run it on base proton, as customized proton versions (Proton Eggshell) will refuse to run, and may sometimes mess up your display settings.
While you can run this game vanilla, I recommend you to follow this Steam Guide in order for the game to run smoother. You will have to add dinput8 in your winecfg libraries in order to enable the optimization.
With some optimisations, this game will run.
This game was ran at Normal, with everything off/set to the lowest. Averaged around 120fps.
There be times where frames would drop, but most of the time it's fine.
At first launch, the frames were horrible, but after some optimisations (Set Res at 1440p, 144hz refresh rate), and running a few benchmarks, game runs fine.
Used on the stable branch of Proton (3.78, Going beta won't let you connect online.) Everything works as it is, Can play missions w/o any issues, Heck i can maybe that it runs better on Linux, since the Windows version felt laggy (even with the fact that I barely made min. requirements.). The only issue I would say is that when you exit the game, it would freeze for a while and the only way to properly close it is to force close wine, other than that I'd say this game is playable and should be fine for the average user.
Game can launch with the latest patch, Although playing the Holiday Hoarders mission stutters the game alot (It could depend on my specs, your mileage may vary). Regular missions run fine (with the occasional stutter, but not to define it as "stutters alot"). I still have to force quit the game, since Clicking "Close/Exit Game" Freezes it up.
6.20-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Used Proton Glorious Eggroll 6.20
Sometimes when I spawn an object, FPS would go down until I have placed said item.
6.1-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Do not Alt-Tab as others suggested, and don't make the Game Full Screen. Borderless Window is fine.
There was a time where if I had windows in the Steam Overlay open for too long I would get frame drops. I suggest keeping everything in the background closed.
Remember to not Alt-Tab and to not put the game in full screen. Borderless Window is fine.
The game would actually crash when trying to load a save file using the Normal Proton, but switching to GE solved it. Otherwise, a user can play this OOTB.
Runs fine without any issues. Tweaked Graphic Settings to cope with my setup, but all in all one can launch the game without having to change any Proton setting.
Proton GloriousEggroll
After the game is installed from Steam, you actually have to manually install Uplay/Ubisoft Connect yourself, for some reason it doesn't auto install with it as well. Steps to take:
- Download Uplay/Ubisoft Connect. (A quick G search will give you results)
- Assuming that the downloaded exe is in the Downloads folder, run this wineprefix command:
WINEPREFIX='/path/to/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/460930/pfx' ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 5.13/dist/bin/wine ~/Downloads/UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe
- Install Uplay/Ubisoft Connect as you would.
- Once finished, make sure that it will not auto launch once you exit the installer (Untick the checkbox)
Once it's installed, you should be able to launch the game from Steam, and it'll be able to locate Uplay/Ubisoft Connect. Note that Ubisoft's overlay will work as well, although I haven't done full testing to this yet.
And as stated in the title, due to the game's EAC, you can won't be able to connect to multiplayer and only be able to run the game in singleplayer. Otherwise, this game has decent performance, and runs fine.
6.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Added diinput8 Library so that the Silent Patch could be used Proton Version used: Glorious Eggroll 6.8 GE-1
As others said, the introduction freezes if you either don't have the Media Foundation DLL installed or replaced the introduction movie from Yakuza 3. Media Foundation DLL didn't work for me (I guess installing it through protontricks didn't exactly worked), so I just replaced the intro cutscene with Yakuza 3's intro. Once you've done that, the game will run from start to finish without any issues.
6.8-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Was able to play from start to finish OOTB using Proton Eggroll on Ultra Settings.
