Running through Proton 9.0-4 gives flawless experiance, no lag or stutter, no delays or issues with gameplay. Even old saves from years ago loaded up perfectly.
Some minor menu drawing issues but nothing major.
It works fantastically, beware if you Alt-Tab the mouse movement and clicks will still register but this could likely be fixed using virtual desktop or the likes. Otherwise perfect.
Alt-Tabbing can cause the window to become stuck at a quarter size of the screen, similar to issues with this on Windows. No fix found yet.
Works rather well thus far, just has issues with Alt-Tabbing but this is the case on Windows too.
What little tricks it took to make it work once figured out, it is well worth flying Il-2 Great Battles as a Linux user.

Some say install d3d compiler 47.dll, however I have found the need to use d3d compiler 43 dll in addition to compiler 47.
Initially the menu screen was very laggy, the camera was outside the hanger and no plane was rendered [an error was given about inability to load plane 3d but did not break the process] to fix this, use proton 10.0-1 with d3dcompiler43.dll, d3dcompiler47.dll, and d3dx11.dll. This fixed all graphical issues entirely.
Thrustmaster T.Rudder is not detecting, despite wine control and other proton games and native games detecting it fine. None of the online solutions worked for me so I must use a different rudder pedal. Opentrack aswell I have been unable to make work with any solutions found online thus far. Still researching these issues actively.
Almost perfect just the Thrustmaster rudder issue and opentrack issues remain to be solved.
When closing the game from main menu, mouse will remain captured by the process forcing logout. To avoid this simply Alt-Tab from the game and close from Steam to stop the process.
Saving and loading gives errors relating to .tga and .bmp teture files, use Proton 10.0 to fix this.
Mods do not work with default Proton version, switch to Proton 10.0 to allow mods to work.
Stability is same as on Windows, some odd crashes but no more than what is experianced on Windows.
Works great running through Proton 10.0, no different than on Windows.
After adding d3d compiler 43 with protontricks, the game runs flawlessly, better than windows by around 5-10%.
Install d3d compiler 43 in order to make the game run, otherwise CTD on launch.
