Outside of missing art it seems to play as good as it plays on Windows.
Some characters displayed without color and were shadows on screen.
Setting up controllers may be a little bit of a hassle but that has more to do with the game choosing the input method when making a selection at the main menu.
I saw no significant performance difference running standard Proton vs GE Proton.
As everone previously stated you need to disable Steam/Origin in-game overlay and add -skipvideos to Origin's launch options, however I'd like to clarify how you do that. Add the origin installation from the proton prefix as a non-steam game: Click on the plus in the bottom left corner of the steam window and choose "Add non-steam game"
Navigate to "/home//.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1238080/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Origin", change the dropdown from ".desktop files" to "all files" and select "Origin.exe".
Right click on the Origin.exe that was added to the steam library and go to properties. Under "Compatibility" select Proton Experimental.
Set launch options to: STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/home//.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1238080" %command%
No issue other than not being able to set it to 144Hz which is not exclusive to this game. Got into the multiplayer lobby with no issue either.
Ran perfectly without any tweaks, even streamed it to my Steam Link. The only minor issue is that the video thumbnails of upgrades doesn't load. I suspect the Pre Viz cutscenes could also be an issue.
Can load up the configure utility, but no matter what settings I select, the game won't start.
Confirming the previous post that game runs with patch provided from the link. Turn off Direct3D and Compatibility mode in the configuration. https://verokster.blogspot.com/2019/03/disciples-i-ii-gl-wrapper-patch.html
Outside of the opening title background video not playing, everything seems to work. The major issue is that I suffer from a big performance hit running this on Linux compared to Windows. While for the most part I'm hitting 60+, the framerate will slow at points which never happened on Windows. I'm not familiar with protontricks so I couldn't really follow along with the recommendations on the page. If anyone wants to post a more comprehensive guide to improving performance, it'd would be greatly appreciated.
Proton 4.2 seems to break game. Going down to at least the beta 13.16 fixes the issue and the game is completely playable. Have not tested multiplayer or with a controller yet.
I was able to boot up normally and enter the practice range. Privacy policy popup appeared behind the game.
Did not enter multiplayer, only practice area, but that seems further than current reports. Started with Proton Experimental.
No additional tweaks were needed. Haven't played on Windows yet so I can't compare, however there is slightly more frame drops than I expect, but that may be a settings issue and not the game.
To get the game to start I had to alt-tab once after the splash screen and had no issues playing from there. The only problems are the star requirements for jobs don't render so in emails it'll show "Req:" and Time Spy just plays out a black image which ruins immersion. Tested in OpenGL led to textures glitching out so I'd avoid that.

Failed to Boot
Game seems to crash immediately without any error message or visual indication.
Followed the previously mentioned guide from GloriousEggroll and plugged in a controller. The game did crash without the controller, but with it plugged in, it ran basically flawlessly.
