Runs perfectly
Same as Gallean's Return - no third party patches required, runs as-is without issues; window switching works also.

Starts good (singleplay)
Played with Proton 8.0-3.
I disabled the right track pad's touch to left click, set the dpad to keyboard arrow keys to navigate the map (because diagonals don't work so you can't use the left analog), and R4 as the left mouse click.
You can turn every performance option down to their lowest setting without any issues. I left the GPU clock at 600MHz since I was testing different resolutions and turning it any lower would make the game crash at higher resolutions.
Launch settings need to be configured to the following or else the game won't launch, things will be to zoomed out, or the image won't be centered.
Res: 800x600
Refresh rate: 60hz
Display game in widow: ✓
Use Direct3D: ✓
Accumulate AI actions for smoother animation playback during AI turn:✓
Game image is not centered if the following isn't set in the launch config.

first time user, trying to understand what people mean in comments seems impossible as the links they post ae a blank screen
Still one of the best Dark Fantasy TBS. Works like a charm on Linux.

6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Install DLL ! [DirectPlay] for multiplayer working !
If you do not install DirectPlay DLLs via protontricks, then multiplayer will not work for you !

Requires previously mentioned GL wrapper, then works ok
Works great but crashes on alt-tab
Game crashes to desktop every time I use Alt-Tab

Confirming the previous post that game runs with patch provided from the link. Turn off Direct3D and Compatibility mode in the configuration. https://verokster.blogspot.com/2019/03/disciples-i-ii-gl-wrapper-patch.html

After using the below wrapper/patch, it appears to work fine.

Can load up the configure utility, but no matter what settings I select, the game won't start.

Doesn't start even mixing all Proton environment variables.
