Proton 5.21-GE-1 (GloriousEggroll)
Switching windows with Alt-Tab can cause the camera to start moving in a random direction, as if the mouse was stuck at the edge of the game screen.
Single player works perfectly, but multiplayer is currently broken.
There is some minor audio degradation, particularly in the music.
Since the last update (which added the new African Royals DLC), multiplayer has completely stopped working in Proton, either online or via LAN. No games can be seen or joined from the menu, and while direct invitations appear, they cannot be accepted.
Gameplay is perfect out of the box. Minor issue with dual-monitor setup.
With my multi-monitor setup, I could not get the game to launch on my primary monitor. It always appears to display on the right-most monitor instead.
Works better in Proton than running natively
The native Linux version caused frequent crashes, both of the game and the entire desktop environment. Running the game in Proton, however, worked perfectly out of the box.
Actual gameplay runs perfectly, with minor graphical slowdowns at the start of each level.
Any time the camera moves at the start to display which zombies will be part of a particular level, the framerate drops to ~5 FPS. This does not impact the ability to actually select plants, as the mouse still moves at full speed.
Once the level actually begins, everything plays as expected, with no framerate drops.
The game's engine expects an older version of libcrypt than exists in my distro. This is why the game fails to launch without the Steam Linux Runtime.
Some shadows in the menu show artifacts. However, all graphics in the actual game are perfect, as far as I can tell.
Multiplayer with multiple friends running Windows, including playing through DLC content, works as expected.
Even at difficulty levels with massive amounts of enemies, I didn't notice any unexpected slowdowns.
mangohud MANGOHUD_CONFIG=read_cfg,vsync=2 %command% -force-vulkan -hwcursor
The new Ultra Deluxe content has heavy amounts of distracting Z-fighting artifacts, unless the game is forced to use Vulkan via the launch options in Steam.
I experienced two crashes during my playthrough, at different points. Restarting the game and going back to the same area, however, worked as expected.
After installing Mangohud and adding the correct launch options, everything seemed to work just fine.
