Worked fresh out of the box with no tweaking using Proton Experimental
--use-d3d11
If you enable fullscreen, the game won't be able to launch again until you clear disable it again from the settings.ini (./Steam/steamapps/common/Helldivers 2/data/settings.ini)
Without d3d11 the game launches, but will randomly freeze at some point within the first 180 seconds. --use-d3d11 allowed the game to run flawlessly as long as you don't enable fullscreen.
If you enable fullscreen and relaunch, the game will stay at a black screen causing you to force quit the game which can sometimes cause an nProtect initialization failure error. Fixed this by deleting the GameGuard and 553850 folders and re-verifying game files, it should launch to initial setup and windowed borderless again. Runs beautifully afterwards.

Out of the box, app launched to a black screen and system would give me the 'App Not Responding' force-quit prompt
I extended the period of time Ubuntu/gnome waits for a non-responsive app to 5 minutes to allow Just Cause to do whatever it was trying to do in the background. Patience is key here; app launches incredibly slowly, but will eventually load and play without issue.
Game crashes unexpectedly for seemingly no reason, up to every 15-20 minutes sometimes; entire screen freezes and application needs to be terminated before you can relaunch and try again.
I do get longer stretches of stability where I can play for longer before disconnecting, but this seems random and unpredictable.
