Issues with configuring which monitor the game should run on
Some minor hicups here and there, happen rarely
The game itself runs fine, native. Has some hiccups here and there, but overall pretty similar experience to Windows. If you use more than one monitor, it will use all of them, for some reason. It's a bit annoying to fix, but can be done. Basically, set the game to windowed, lowest resolution available, then restart it. After that, drag the window to the monitor you want to use, set it to fullscreen and your resolution, restart it again. Should work fine. I have not messed around with making the game run borderless, as there is no menu option for it.
The game runs fine, the two things I mentioned are annoying and not what I expect from a Valve game.
SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0 %command%
The game insists on minimizing when switching to a different window. For example, if I click on something on a different monitor, the game always minimizes on the main one. Got this one fixed with the launch option.
Had to disable Shader Pre-caching in Steam, otherwise it would try to do so on every game launch, which takes an INSANE amount of time, to the point that it's not feasable. The only issue with disabling said feature is that when loading into a map, the first 2 or 3 rounds I'd have around -25% fps than normal. In a few rounds it does go back to regular performance.
The game works just fine out of the box. Some minor issues here and there, but nothing too bad.
Tried Proton Experimental & Latest GE Proton (9-20)
Some textures take a tiny bit longer to load, but that rarely happens. In some rare cases, if the camera goes below the car for a split second you can see under the map.
The 'Fullscreen' option apparently should work as Borderless Fullscreen, but it has some issues. Mainly, when you click on a window in a seperate monitor, the main screen would go black - can get back into the game by using alt-tab just fine though.
Even though the game asks you to login to your Microsoft account, if you have played the game on Game Pass before - you won't be able to access that save. This isn't much of a Proton/Linux issue, as it is a deliberate design choice by Microsoft to keep those saves exclusive to their platform.
There are some micro-stutters here and there, but they are pretty minor and happen somewhat rarely. While they are present in the gameplay itself, I mostly experience them in the menu.
The game works perfectly fine, just Install and click Play.
It is a bit upsetting that Microsoft keeps savefiles hostage while still asking you to log in their account while on Steam, but hey - it is what it is. In terms of gameplay there are some minor issues, but those shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the game. Still, I tried to mitigate those using different versions of Proton, but honestly - don't bother. It's either on par or worse compared to the default experience Steam offers.
Works out of the box
No issues whatsoever. Well, there are some things, but those are platform-agnostic, so not gonna list those. Game genuinely runs better on Linux that on Windows & Xbox, no crashing like on the aforementioned platforms.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
- Run the game once, then close it.
- Clone this GitHub repo: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff/tree/main
- Open Protontricks
- Choose NEKOPARA Vol. 4
- Select the default wineprefix
- Run a commandline shell (for debugging)
Do note, if a terminal window does not open at this point, you might need to install a different terminal emulator. In my case I just went with xterm, did the job just fine.
- Run sh /home/user/Downloads/vn_winestuff-main/codec.sh wmp11 quartz2
After it’s done, close the terminal window and winetricks windows that might pop up.
Enjoy.
There's some minor artifacting when switching between menu screens
Fullscreen refused to work properly.
Changing the game to windowed, setting the resolution to the highest possible and switching back to fullscreen fixed it.
This might just be an issue on the COSMIC desktop though.
Opening and Ending video would not play, use protontricks to fix that.
If you don't wanna mess around with it, honestly just install and play - it works perfectly fine. The only thing that you're missing out on is two videos, one at the beginning and another at the end of the game, so just watch those on YouTube or something.
If you do want to get those fixed, then get ready to tinker.
- First I cloned this repo: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff/
- Then I used protontricks to open a commandline shell (for debugging) in the nekopara vol. 4 prefix.
- From there just ran sh /home/user/Downloads/vn_winestuff/codec.sh wmp11 quartz2 (change the path according to your system).
Realistically you don't have to do this, but if you don't you'll be missing out on the intro and ending video for the game.
The gameplay itself works just fine, the fixes provided are fairly optional.
Works just fine.
When launching the game it sometimes decides to just max out the audio for no reason..? Happens fairly rarely though.
Game works out of the box no issues, install and play. It has reset the audio levels a couple of times I think, but other than that - no issues whatsoever.
Used to run into audio issues, but not anymore - something must have gotten updated, I guess..?
You still have to use the "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%" launch options, otherwise there is no NPC audio.

In-game videos (like character ability previews) do not show up, instead showing a generic video test pattern.
I've had a freak incident once when the audio was just not there for some reason, restarting the game fixed it though.
I didn't even bother with the default proton version, just went with the one people recommend for this game - seems to work fine, so am just sticking with it. Installing the adult patch was somewhat easy, just had to put the patch installer in the same location as the game .exe, then double clicked it and wine just did everything, installed it just fine.
