Protontricks is required to install this: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff
Don't bother using protontricks to install WMP11, it will cause the game to crash. Instead, do this:
- Clone this git repo: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff
- Run protontricks and select your game (in this case, "NEKOPARA Vol. 3: 602520"}
- Dismiss a bunch of warnings complaining that it can't detect the bitness of your Wine setup (these days it's WOW64 by default)
- Keep "Select the default wineprefix" selected, hit OK
- Select "Run a commandline shell (for debugging)", hit OK. This will fire up your default terminal emulator, now configured to run Wine/Proton within your game prefix
- On the just opened terminal run the following:
export WINEARCH="win64"
bash /path/to/your/vn_winestuff/codec.sh quartz2 wmp11
winecfg -v win10
This should be enough to get the OP/ED movies working, for those that absolutely want them (hint: you paid for them, so you do!)
Back again to Kirikiri as the game engine, that means it will just skip the videos unless you tinker to get them working - aside of that the game experience is just perfect.
Please note that unlike every other game in the series so far, the R18 DLC is a off-site purchase (get it from Denpasoft), and it comes with its own installer - fire it up via protontricks' debug console, or just run it via vanilla (heh) Wine. If you choose the latter way, be aware that the installer will not be able to detect your game install location, and furthermore you have to enable hidden (dot) files on winecfg, then point the installer to Z:\home\$USER\.steam\debian-installation\steamapps\common\NEKOPARA Vol. 4\
.
Now, to wait for Vol. 5 After and the highly sought Shigure route more Fraise...

- First I cloned this repo: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff/
- Then I used protontricks to open a commandline shell (for debugging) in the nekopara vol. 4 prefix.
- From there just ran sh /home/user/Downloads/vn_winestuff/codec.sh wmp11 quartz2 (change the path according to your system).
Realistically you don't have to do this, but if you don't you'll be missing out on the intro and ending video for the game.
The gameplay itself works just fine, the fixes provided are fairly optional.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
- Run the game once, then close it.
- Clone this GitHub repo: https://github.com/b-fission/vn_winestuff/tree/main
- Open Protontricks
- Choose NEKOPARA Vol. 4
- Select the default wineprefix
- Run a commandline shell (for debugging)
Do note, if a terminal window does not open at this point, you might need to install a different terminal emulator. In my case I just went with xterm, did the job just fine.
- Run sh /home/user/Downloads/vn_winestuff-main/codec.sh wmp11 quartz2
After it’s done, close the terminal window and winetricks windows that might pop up.
Enjoy.
There's some minor artifacting when switching between menu screens
Fullscreen refused to work properly.
Changing the game to windowed, setting the resolution to the highest possible and switching back to fullscreen fixed it.
This might just be an issue on the COSMIC desktop though.
Opening and Ending video would not play, use protontricks to fix that.
If you don't wanna mess around with it, honestly just install and play - it works perfectly fine. The only thing that you're missing out on is two videos, one at the beginning and another at the end of the game, so just watch those on YouTube or something.
If you do want to get those fixed, then get ready to tinker.

LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8
Installed Japanese fonts
The game crashes when using DXVK and gets a black screen when using VKD3D.
Use Proton 3.7, Disable DXVK, Enable VKD3D v2.11.1 and D3D Extras v2. Add the Japanese locale to your system(check your distro's wiki) and set the game locale to ja_JP.UTF-8. You can do that with the LC_ALL environment variable. Install fonts if necessary. This configuration is a bit annoying to install but works.
Game runs perfectly

install directshow and wmp9
Install directshow and wmp9 to play OP

Steam Input bindings don't function in game mode unless the game is changed to windowed. Fullscreen bindings work fine in desktop mode.
No issues at all
Cutscenes (tried with OP) don't work. As a recommendation (even for Windows users), enable fps limiting, otherwise the game will use resources to oblivion (can be done by going to Help > Display Advanced Settings, then go to Advanced Settings > Frame Rate Settings)
Certain graphics like small-character on corner of screen special transitions will CTD without wined3d. Can't seem to strangle fps so it will run into the thousands which is not ideal for power consumption.
Cursor escaping window might force windowed (multi monitor). Can CTD if you alt tab or do any window management.
Great wholesome experience out the box.
if you whant the DLC that is unavalible on steam for some reason ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°. you will need to buy it somewhere else like dlsite and aapply it seperately. the DLC installer work's flawlessly trough lastest wine tho so no worry there. just point the installer to the folder where the game is installed in steam and bam it just work's. otherwise the base bage without the ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° stuff play's perfectly fine out the box.
Under Launch Options add "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%" idk why but using "LC_ALL" doesn't seem to work
Use proton version 3.7-8 and set launched option to "LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%". It can help fix the character □□□□.
if it still doesn't work, try to recompile locales:
open terminal and run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales"
find "ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8"
select "[ * ] ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8"
click "Ok"
click "Ok" again to confirm it
The character on the bottom left makes the game crashed. Use proton version 4.11-13 and below
op and ed are not played and still no solution yet
Works almost perfectly
Only crashes when using DXVK and a character appears on the bottom left

Works almost perfectly if forced to Proton 4.11
Missing some minor font characters in English. Completely unreadable in Japanese, since everything gets replaced with □□□□
Using DXVK would cause a crash to desktop when a character appears in the lower left near the text field. Putting `PROTON_USE_WINED3D %command% in the launch options ran without crashes.
The game might start rendering improperly when you Alt-Tab. Toggling between fullscreen and windowed mode fixed it.
If you're in fullscreen and you open the menus by moving the mouse to the top, the mouse may no longer function correctly. Alt-tabbing out and back in seems to fix this.
