With Proton 5.0-9, the game launches, but trying to join a Public game loads forever instead of getting to the server menu (normally it goes to the server menu almost instantly). With Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier the game doesn't launch. With Proton 4.11-13 the game launches and matchmaking works perfectly.
I get FPS lag spikes loading into my first few games after each update. Workaround is just to play the game until that disappears; after that, performance has been flawless for me. You can also mess around with all the guns in the firing range so that your computer "knows" what they look like---the issue is only when some new effect is drawn on screen.
This is the usual issue DXVK has with needing to compile shaders on the fly when it sees them for the first time. It's not nearly as bad as in other games with the same issue, like Overwatch, where I continue to have low performance.
When you get FPS lag spikes from DXVK compilation, you'll also get network lag spikes, but those also pretty much go away after a few games.
I've been looking for a Linux-compatible battle royale for a long time, and I'm glad Respawn Entertainment has enabled Proton support for Apex Legends. Apart from DXVK-related lag spikes, as mentioned, it's a like-native experience.
Disable Steam overlay
Sometimes mouse clicks wouldn't register after AltTabbing out and back in. AltTabbing out and back in again fixed it.
With Steam overlay on—loads to a black screen with music.
With Steam overlay off—flawlessly playable, except for the mouse issues mentioned above that are easy to work around.
Fun game and highly recommended.
Works perfectly out of the box
The dev has been committed since the public alpha to making sure the game works on Linux and fixing any bugs that arise in Wine. Cogmind has always worked perfectly for me on Linux. There's also a non-Steam build that can be run with normal Wine.
Installed d3dcompiler_47
Crashes before the main menu without installing d3dcompiler_47 with Protontricks. Works great so far once that is done. I've read that there's also a native Linux version available off Steam, but I haven't tried it.
FPS stutter (especially when rapidly turning) resolved by turning Async Compute ON in the settings. If you get lag, try flipping the setting on or off.
Works right out of the box and is an amazing experience. Some occasional server issues, but those seem to be due to the popularity of the game, not related to Linux compatibility, and they don't take away the fun of the game.
There's a one-pixel light gray border around the viewport in borderless windowed mode (goes away in fullscreen). Doesn't really affect anything, but you can switch to fullscreen if it bothers you.
You'll probably want to turn off mouse smoothing in the settings (not Linux-specific, just in general). I thought my mouse was lagging until I found that setting.
Proton version I'm using is just 5.0-10, not RC3. Latest Proton (5.13-2) or the Steam Linux Runtime doesn't work.
Everything works great, except fullscreen. But if you don't mess with fullscreen, it runs like a native app.
With Steam Linux Runtime I get a "missing executable" error. Forcing the Proton version to 5.13-1 fixes it.
Works perfectly out of the box
Wonderful game that works great on Linux with no adjustments whatsoever.
Hangs without loading with Proton 5.13-4. Works flawlessly on 5.0-10, at least in the tutorial games, but I haven't tried multiplayer yet.
Works perfectly out of the box. There's a half-second stutter when each new turn begins, but that's the only thing that's remotely a problem, and nowhere near an impediment to enjoying the game.
