I was able to play online perfectly with 3 friends. Steam integrations seem to work, I was invited into a game via Steam Chat.
6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll GloriousEggroll
Proton: 6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll. Steam launch option (under game properties): SKIPINTRO
I was able to play online multiplayer with a friend fine, with the GloriousEggroll Proton. Single player also good.

Occasional minor stutter, such as in game when researching a technology the game has some animation over the building and always seems to stutter the game for a second when that animation starts but then quickly resolves. Also in the menu when selecting map type it took about 45 seconds to load the map selection page, but it did eventually load and I could select the map type fine.
-dx9
Had to enable a virtual desktop in winecfg as otherwise game kept minimising itself.
Had to use -dx9 flag or else after cutscenes got booted to main menu.
Heroic/Epic games version. Wouldn't run with Wine-GE, does run with Proton-GE-Proton7-24.
Videos are not working but only have these on game start and main menu background. No problem in game.
Epic games version via Heroic. Works with Wine-GE-Proton7-10.
When starting the game it would hang on a black screen and eventually crash before getting to the main menu. But if on the black screen you spam the "Esc" key five or so times it will go to the main menu and seems to work fine thereafter. Guess there are some videos/splashscreen that isn't working but can skip these with Esc.
When exiting the game it hangs. Can alt-tab to Steam client to stop from there. Progress saving not affected.
Would not run in Steam with any Proton version. However does work running outside of Steam using Wine.
Did not run with Proton in steam but using standard Wine or Wine-GE does run. E.g. use Heroic launcher to point to the games installed exe directly and use Wine instead of Proton. I used Wine 9.0 (Staging) and runs without any additional launch arguments.
6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The game had been working fine for long time now. Most recently when I tried it would open the launcher but pressing play would hang. I have it working again with steps others have provided in other reports. I am using Proton 6.21-GE-2 currently. In steam go to the game properties > local files > 'Verify integrity...' to fix any corrupted game files. On the same properties page click browse to open the game files directory. Open a terminal in this directory and run: chmod 444 ./gamedata2.dat The the game works again for me, perfectly including online play.
Some hassle to get the wine prefix set up but once required components in place works perfectly.
Used a WINEARCH=win32 environment variable to create a 32-bit wine prefix. Then used winetricks to install xna40 (which I think also installs dotnet40 and xact, or else install these too) and d3dcompiler_47. Then used winecfg to add as library override xactengine3_6 as (native, builtin).
This was the epic games version via Heroic launcher.

Fixed with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60
Epic games version via Heroic launcher.
Worked perfectly for me with Proton-7.2-GE-2, without changes to the launcher exe other reports required with earlier Proton versions. The only thing to note is on a HDPI/4K display resolution the game UI/text is quite small, though this seems to be a problem with the game on Windows too and nothing to do with using Proton; I just changed my display resolution before playing.
--force-opengl
Played a random matchmaking online match and worked perfectly.
Heroic (Epic games) version played with Wine-GE-Proton7-24. Worked perfectly, including gamepad input and online play, but only after adding launch option "--force-opengl" (without quotes), without this the game always crashed upon launch.
