Worked fine out of the box with proton experimental
Worked fine out of the box
Works out of the box.

Seemed fine in a short test
Couldn't initially see all the buttons. Had to press 'alt+enter'
Other than needing to force full screen, it seemed to work well.
No difference in gaming experience between linux and windows.

The game is now working great with Proton 7.0-2!
This game used to be broken.
Worked perfectly for me with Proton-7.2-GE-2, without changes to the launcher exe other reports required with earlier Proton versions. The only thing to note is on a HDPI/4K display resolution the game UI/text is quite small, though this seems to be a problem with the game on Windows too and nothing to do with using Proton; I just changed my display resolution before playing.

Just as suggested below, to get the game to run:
"Rename/delete Starships64.exe and rename Starships.exe to Starships64.exe
If you don’t, the game will crash during the video introduction."
Works great!
Rename two files and then it's a perfect experience
Rename/delete Starships64.exe and rename Starships.exe to Starships64.exe
If you don't, the game will crash during the video introduction.
Game goes to fullscreen then sound shutters and quits.
Added launch option: rm Starships64.exe && ln -s Starships.exe Starships64.exe; %command%
Started only renaming the launcher (Starships.exe to Starships64.exe)
The game shows the first few menus and then quits.

Deleting "starships64.exe" and rename starships.exe to starships64.exe works without any issues. My previous issues that steam auto-repairs the file is gone

Deleted /home/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Starships/Starships64.exe. Renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe. Game Runs After it for more many hours perfectly.
Plays great if you can get through the intro movie without getting stuck in a loop
Tried the trick mentioned here to remove starships64.exe and rename the 32 bit version but game gets stuck in an audio loop during the startup movie. If I hit escape fast enough, b4 it gets stuck in loop, it plays fine.

Deleted /home/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Starships/Starships64.exe. Renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe. Game Runs After it for more many hours perfectly.

Game audio loops and stays at black screen after displaying game publisher's and developers logo.
Workaround: Replace Starship64.exe with Starship.exe to trick Steam to launch into 32bit version of the game.
Issue: Buttons are misaligned by half. Clicking the button half of a button will trigger the button below it. Only top half of the very top button can trigger that button.
Tip: Windowed fullscreen doesn't put the game into fullscreen in GNOME but helps with screen resolution in smaller displays (e.g. 720p)

First instant run after downloading the game works fine. A 2nd start leads to showing Firaxis and K2 Logo and then you have an audio-loop. Game is not playable because of a black screen and audio-loop. Renaming the exe (like other people mentioned) does not work, because Steam detects a "wrong" file and does an update first.

Deleted Starships64.exe and renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe.
No sound effects but music works. Everything else works

Deleted /home/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Starships/Starships64.exe. Renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe. Game Runs After it for more many hours perfectly.

Renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe

Starships64.exe crashes upon start. Deleted /home/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Starships/Starships64.exe. Renamed Starships.exe to Starships64.exe.

Got it to start by changing /tmp/proton_${user}/run to start game with Starships.exe instead of Starships64.exe and DLL overrides dotnet20=n

Can't get past initial logos. After second pair of logos fade there is a looping sound and the game doesn't do anything. No success with tweaks

Starts but then fades to black and hangs (music loops)

Freezes on startup with a black screen and looping audio.

Shows 2K / Firaxis logo then screen goes black and first second of music loops forever
