Add to the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=b,n" %command% to fix the missing audio
As already mentioned by other reports, you need also PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% in the launch options or the games crashes at start
wmp11 is required to play the game:
- get a recent version of winetricks (older versions do not support wmp11 installation on 64bit prefix): "wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks"
- "chmod +x winetricks"
- install wmp11 in silent mode (without silent mode it didn't work for me): "WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/304240/pfx ./winetricks
- select silent mode
- install wmp11
Enjoy the game

Game will crash checking for DLC
I used to be able to play the game after manually installing Media Foundation (https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install). It probably was proton version 4.* or 5.*. Now it simply crashes after trying to download DLC. I tried different version of proton, with or without installing Media Foundation and I also tried Proton GE
Nothing has changed in this new Proton version (5.02)
Only RAID mode works, when starting normal game (Campaign) it gets stuck at loading screen! I didn't try any workaround
Out of the box only RAID mode works, when starting normal game (Campaign) it gets stuck at loading screen. To fix that we need WMP9 (the other reports mention wmp10 but I was able to get the game working with wmp9). We need a custom winetricks to be able to easily install wmp9 on a 64bit wine prefix (1) go to https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/issues/1087 and save the proposed patch to a file winetricks-wmp9.patch (2) get winetricks: wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks (3) patch winetricks: patch winetricks winetricks-wmp9.patch (4) install wmp9: WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/222480/pfx ./winetricks
Same as RERevelation 2: heavy stuttering likely due to caching. When visiting the same areas the stuttering disappears.
WMP9 is needed to make Campaign (normal game) works. Wmp9 can easily installed with winetricks: "WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/222480/pfx ./winetricks wmp9"
Since wmp9 installation on a 64bit prefix is a new feature , you might have to download a special version of winetricks until the patch for wmp9 is applied to the stable winetrick (wget https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/blob/b63cff1b1e84484d95118d19567bf6c12eb299bd/src/winetricks). For the details see here (https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/issues/1087)
Sometimes there is a strong stuttering, but the game is fully playable. I believe it's a matter of personal feeling if that stuttering makes the game annoying to you or not, I dind't mind and I enjoyed the game .
WMP11 is needed to view menus and cut scenes. I used a proposed winetrick patch from https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/pull/1489, which enable WMP11 installation. (1) go to the link and download that version of winetricks (2) "chmod +x winetricks" (3) "WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/287290/pfx ./winetricks" (4) When the GUI opens select "Enable Silent Install" and then proceed in installing WMP11
As already reported "Heavy stuttering in lots of areas but the game is still fully playable". The stuttering seems to be related to caching: when you go back to an area that you have already visited the stuttering disappears, even after restarting the game

- install wmp11: "WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/287290/pfx ./winetricks wmp11"
- Don't worry about the verification failure at the end of the installation

As already reported, because "the game checks for type of controller with each input meaning it checks if you're using a keyboard or gamepad with every button press [...] buttons sometimes won't work unless you mash them." This is really annoying, I am not sure everybody can accept this.

All good with proton 5.0-10
I tried proton 5.13-4 but the games gets stuck at start-up (black screen forever)
As reported by others, the starting video is too slow (1 frame per second), but apply the fix described in here https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within_2 and you are good to go (dowload file tango_logo.bk2 and put it in game installation directory e.g. ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/TheEvilWithin2/base/bink)
Runs great OTB in Proton 5.10
With latest Proton 5.13-4 the game started but it showed only a black screen , but with Proton 5.10 it worked perfectly
Works out of the box
When switching from the game to another application (I played in a dual monitors machine) the controller axes didn't work anymore. So I had to exit full screen (alt+enter) and enter full screen again (alt+enter). No problem after than
