When changing from a higher resolution (3440x1440 in my case) down to a lower resolution, the window does not scale to fit the screen. I think that is more a bug in wine than anything else
There were some hitches and hiccups through playing the game. Nothing game-breaking though. Cutscenes are where most of the choppiness is.
On Linux, Steam cannot get the key to run ACII by itself, so I had to run the following command in my terminal to get the key working.
sed -i 's/legacykeyregistrylocation/legacykeyregistrylocation2/g' ~/.steam/steam/appcache/appinfo.vdf
This is only session based though, if you logout or reboot, then you will have to perform this command again. To make it permenant, just add that command to your startup applications.
Game will not Launch, Anti-Cheat sofware prevents game launchage
The game uses xtrap anticheat which prevents the game from launching.
Runs perfectly. Had an issue where the game was capped at 60 fps. Thought it was proton, but it happens on Windows as well. (Had to turn it to Borderless to uncap the FPS)
Game runs perfectly in both OpenGL and Vulkan. I think it runs just a touch better in Vulkan.
Game has anti-cheat. Unplayable
The game uses some form of anti-cheat that will not even let the game launch.
No issues whatsoever. Ran perfectly as if it were on Windows. I did not get to check if online play works as there were no available servers to connect to. Ran perfectly out of the box, no tweaks or anything needed. Even ran it on 200% Res scale to see if it would crash. Nope, it handled it like a boss.
If you do not set the bar extrememly high and realize that Proton is still a WIP, the it is enjoyable
I play most of my games at 3440x1440. However when I play a game like this that I know is going to be hard to run on Proton I will lower the resolution to 1920x1080. Normally when I do that the game will scale to the monitor. However when playing it under Linux, it does not scale all the well and ends up slightly scrunched up. Still playable, but it is noticeable.
There was a lot of choppiness at the beginning of playing the game on Linux. Aftet about 20ish minutes, that went away. According to some of the guys in the ProtonDB Discord server, that has to do with shader compiling. Once that was done, the game sped up quite a bit.
When launching the game for the first time as of Proton 4.11-8, the Rockstar Game Launcher is no longer an issue as it used to be. It will however crash on the first startup. Just hit play on the game again and it will work just fine after that.
There were absolutely no launch options required either. It ran great OOB after updating to Proton 4.11-8
The game installs fine, will not launch though
It does not matter when version of Proton you use. I even used Proton 4.15-GE-4 and that did not even work.
I do not have high hopes for this game becoming playable without an immense amount of hacking required.
Everything runs great. The menu is a little laggy, but the actual gameplay is smooth as silk. Played online with a friend for about an hour with no issues whatsoever. The only issue I ran into is if you put the game in Windowed mode, it is designed to scale with the Window, but it does not actually scale with the window. That is such a small thing since it plays just fine in all the other modes.
There are horizontal lines running through of of the models and textures. It does not always happen, but it appears to be when something is at a certain distance from the camera
I have a high end system and noticed quite a few dropped frames when in the bullet view. That is the only time I see the slowdowns
The game refuses to launch if you install the game to the default ~/.steam
directory. It comes up with a Path not found and Access Denied error. Placing the game in a SteamLibrary that does not start with a period (aka hidden folder) fixes this issue
I tried literally everything
I tried so many different way to try and make this work
- Using the Default Proton 4.11-8: Crashed
- Using GloriusEggroll 4.15-GE-4: Crashed
- Giving permissions to all folders relating to SE4: Crashed
From what I have read, it is possible to get it working with the staging version of wine, but that would mean recompiling Proton from scratch with Wine staging included.
As of right now, Sniper Elite 4 is unplayable. When pressing play, the launcher does appear, however it is severely broken. Only shows a white background with text. When you press play in the launcher, it crashes.

This game runs beautifully. Though beware there are some graphical glitches
There are some textures that glitch out here and there, but nothing too bad. The worst of it is when your rock is careening toward your planet. the textures on the plant go all wacky.
Online features are not available since EA has shutdown Spore's servers. There is nothing that can be done about this, just thought I should include it.
The game runs perfectly out of the box. I did however have the infinite walking bug. So there is one tweak that I did have to make, but I do not think that is enough to put it down to Gold. The one tweak I had to make to make the infinite walking bug go away was open up the file "Oblivion.ini" located at /home/[username]/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/22330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Oblivion
I then had to turn "bUse Joystick" from 1 to 0 (Essentially disabling the joystick).
After that, the game ran absolutely perfectly.
The game runs perfectly as if it were running on Windows.
I am running a Radeon VII and I did notice a couple frame drops here and there running Borderless, Ultra, TAA Max, 1920x1080.
Skyrim SE cannot auto detect hardware when running on Proton, so you have to manually set your graphical settings. But I prefer manually setting them anyway.
At this time, the frequent crashes make this game unplayable. Once fixed, it would be fine.
Had to use Set Launch Options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
The game crashes anytime I try to hack an alarm. It makes it impossible to get through quite a few missions.
Proton-4.15-GE-4 GloriousEggroll
Launch Options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
No Sound, Fixed with the above Launch Options
xboxdrv need to be installed and running, even if you are not using a controller: https://bit.ly/33ayhSz
Audio was completely missing. I have to use the following Launch Options to get the audio to work
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
After using these launch options, the audio worked fine and never fell out of sync or anything.
Warframe on Linux has a weird issue where it will crash after about 5 minutes of play time if it does not detect a controller present. There is a way around this by installing xboxdrv as a service. Follow this link to learn how to do it: https://github.com/BeholdenCypress/WarframeDummyController/blob/master/DummyController.md
The last section about gamepads covers this section
I was using Proton-4.15-GE-4 before, however I have gone back to using the default version of Proton which seems to work just as well now.
