Huge thanks to the wine/proton team for allowing us to play on Linux systems !
Several times i've had a message telling me some file is missing : the game launches, but when joining a lobby for instance I would get a missing file error. The solution for me was to repair the game on Steam (Right-click on the game in your library -> Properties -> Installed files -> Verify integrity of game files). My theory is, the game launched even though it was being updated by Steam at the same time (because I'm on Proton experimental i guess). It's easily fixed though it takes a few minutes, and it happened only a few times.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_3=n,b;dxgi.dll=n,b" gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -e --force-grab-cursor --hdr-enabled --expose-wayland -- %command%
I've installed mods, but what made the game playable for me was running it at 4K on my 1440p screen. The aliasing was just horrible before: pixelated lines in the trees and grass, making me miss the quality of games made 10 years ago. With gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160
I can select 4K in the game options, which makes it render at a higher resolution which removes most of the aliasing. I'm playing at 4K downscaled to 1440p with HDR, which is insane but the game starts to look decent.
Horrible aliasing: lines of pixels in the trees and grass, overall looking bad. It's not looking like a 2010 game, it's looking like a game with 2020 textures and 2005 rendering. Most of the blame lies with Square from my research: you can't have games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Horizon, and expect people to believe there is some kind of technical limitation that makes this game looks worst than Horizon Zero Dawn on a PS4. Even FF7 Remake looks better than this, the engine certainly did not get better in 5 years ...
At 4K the game might look ok, but it's so difficult to even get the game to look ok-ish. Can't recommend it, I'm disappointed and lost time. Try running the game at 4K if you can, even with a 1440p screen which should reduce the artefacts. I run it at 60fps with textures at medium and I find it way better than the base settings. Meanwhile, I can run Cyberpunk 2077 with high settings at 90fps with barely any artefacts.
FF7 Remake was already not the best looking game, but it was contained. In 5 years Square managed to make things worse graphically, I would have paid 20 euros for this at best.

I was playing at 120fps/1440p, one day everything was blurry and fps were more around 20fps. I deleted the shadercache, downgraded the Proton version, changed my fans rpm, nothing worked. Then i just rebooted and it was back to 120fps. In case you have the same issue.
