You will need to create a Rockstar account and put the CD key. The game runs smoothly.
It works beautifully. You might need to use a custom Proton (in my case Glorious Eggroll), because 6.3 does not work.
The game works but there are lots of tweaks to do.
First, check that you have Winetricks on the latest version (use winetricks --self-update). I had mine on version 20200412 and the installation process specified below didn't work.
Also, download LAVFilters. Some specified that didn't work, so there is also K-Lite Codec Pack, but I won't provide details.
Run the game once to confirm the issues. From here, run the following commands:
protontricks 1113000 wmp9 quartz devenum
protontricks --gui (Ignore warnings, except the ones regarding Winetricks being obsolete)
On the Wine interface:
- Click on "Select the default wineprefix" and then "Ok"
- Click on "Run winecfg" and the "Ok"
- Click on the "Libraries" tab
- Find devenum on the list (If you can't find it, you are doing it wrong. Stop here). Then click "Remove". Then apply changes and click on "Ok".
- Back to Wine settings, click on "Run Explorer", then "Ok".
- Find the LAV Filters installer, install it with the defaults. When finished, exit the Explorer.
- Click on "Run winecfg" again. Then "Ok".
- Again on the "Libraries" tab, click on "New override", find or type devenum, then click "Add". Apply changes, click ok and exit Wine.
From here, it should work. If not, try adding PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command% to the settings and see if it works now.
Using NixOS, with Steam and Protontricks from Flatpak (the game is bugged if using the "native" Steam). Remember to override the permission to the external storage if you have your games outside.
Ezopek provided the same guide I provided here but with a way clearer explanation. It works as intended, no hiccups so far and the game is completely playable.
Previously, you had to tweak a bunch of stuff with Protontricks. Now, you just install it and it run flawlessly.

Randomly, there are times the game slows down because of a graphical glitch. You'd rather stop playing or your computer will crash soon.
The game works fine. The problem is that there will be a random day where a glitch will happen and the game will feel slow. If you keep playing, your computer will probably crash severely, requiring a hard reboot.
