Currently the default Proton used is the latest (9.0-2), and the game doesn't detect Deck's controller inputs. I switched to Proton 8.0-5 and everything worked as expected.
I followed the advice from multiple previous ProtonDB reports and forced the compatibility layer to GE-Proton7-49 (installed for Steam via ProtonUp-Qt), but cannot launch the game. The loading screen shows an animated Valve logo at the center, with STEAM MENU
at the bottom left and ABORT GAME
at the bottom right.
Using the default Proton8.0-3, I can launch the game, but the first cut scene (and I can safely assume, all the cut scenes in the game) cannot play correctly. The issues described in this Reddit thread seem to be the same as mine: https://old.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/xzuvey/tried_playing_resident_evil_0_on_my_steam_deck/
In the scene where I go on the roof of the train for the first time, the entire background becomes colored stripes (like the no signal screen of cable TV). I tried to ignore it and continue playing, which immediately resulted in the game becoming unresponsive.
In the cut scenes, the visuals frequently freeze while the audio plays smoothly, causing an increasing amount of delay between the visuals and the audio.
After having no success with either Proton8.0-3 or GE-Proton7-49, I tried Proton Experimental, which at the time of this report is based on Proton 8.0. It works much better than the former two, almost leading me to believe I could finish the game with it. I'm glad I held off writing a report here, because it turned out a failure too.
The game will immediately fail to launch with the default Proton9.0-1. Switched to GE Proton7-49 and everything worked perfectly.
I tried Proton 5.0-10, 5.13-6, and Experimental (which is based on 8 as the time of this report), but the startup sequence is always a black screen, rendering the game unplayable.
The native Linux version has various bugs: animations (at launch as well as cutscenes) freeze halfway or outright won't play, controller button prompts (e.g., RB, Y) only shows the shape of the button with no names on it so I had to figure out whether I should press RB or LB.
I switched to Proton Experimental and everything worked perfectly fine. The current latest stable build is Proton 9, so the Experimental build should be based on what will eventually become Proton 10, if I'm not mistaken.
I initially used the default Proton version (8.0-4 as of this report) but when I clicked into the cart control panel and tried to exit that view, the game would crash consistently, rendering the game unplayable past this point. I tried GE next and it worked flawlessly afterwards.
Switch to Desktop Mode
I played in Gaming Mode for several hours and didn't unlock any achievements that should've been unlocked. Switched to Desktop Mode and started over, achievements started unlocking as expected.
I played the native version (Steam Linux Runtime 1.0) as recommended by Valve. Full play through, didn't notice any issues.
