Running Proton GE 9.25 the game opens into a small 640x480 window that you can force to maximize but it doesn't stretch the image, the main menu seems to not like the old camera effect.
So following the instructions below I switched to GE-Proton 7-55 and added the command line
- gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -- %command%
After that it worked like a charm. ProtonDB says I used protontricks, just ignore that.

gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -- %command%
Note: using Wayland, disabled steam overlay. Need to use older ProtonGE 7-55 to run, game is stuck as a 640x480 window. Install gamescope and add launch options to stretch the game to fullscreen resolution.

Black screen after launching
xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
I tried using the launch options in many of the other reports but was not able to make it work, the game starts on a black screen with flickers of the actual game every couple of seconds.

When alt-tabbing, returning results in background textures being black until loading a new area.

With Proton experimental (as of 2024/07/05), didn't need any tinker steps explained in the previous reports. Additionally, Proton handles this game better than Windows 10; I had to use an extra .dll to play this game with Windows, but no such thing is needed with Proton.

xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
When the eye appears, you must wait until the screen goes completely black. Then click briefly in the middle and the animation begins. If you press on a window beforehand, it closes and the game crashes.

Not playable.
Game initially started with a black screen. The "800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo" in player.ini solved that, allowing me to view the intro videos in a whopping 640x480 window (the xdotool trick didn't help here). Unfortunately, as soon as I click the mouse the game crashes.

Need to create a player.ini file in game's root folder (next to the exe) with one line: 800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
SteamOS cursor in front of the game's cursor at all time. But it isn't a real issue
After just a file creation (see above), the game is completely playable from start to end on the steam deck. I've just finished it earlier today and it was a really enjoyable experience.

xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
Make sure there is no " player.ini " file at /SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Syberia
There is no option to use full screen. Using the launch options the game opens up in what looks like 1920x1200 size, So it does not fill the 27" screen but it is much better than the small 800x600 size.
Every now and again the screen blanks out and goes black. Sometimes you still get Kate showing up in a black screen. If you keep walking towards an exit point when the screen refreshes to the new page all is back to normal. If that makes sense.
An excellent game and so far it is running briliantly.

As others mentioned, added a player.ini file in game's root folder (next to the exe) with one line:
800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Need to create player.ini file and run the game on proton 5.0-10
Game work just fine on Deck OLED.

A cracking classic point-n-click adventure. Still looking good, some great animations, fantastic story.
xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
With Proton 7 and up, the game actually launched for me, but only in the small 640x480 window. The xdotool launch options allow for a pleasant full screen experience. If you have created the player.ini file prior to using the xdotool launch options, remove that file or the launch options will not open the full screen. Occasionally when minimizing the game window (by tabbing out), the game will revert to the small 640x480 rendering while in full screen display. You can save, exit and restart the game to get back into proper full screen mode.

xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
Missing textures when minimize window and getting back to the game. It is not critical tho, you just need to move to another location and textures will be restored
By default game doesn't work in fullschreen had to run it with the xdotool selectwindow windowunmap & %command%
option to make it work. In this case once game is started just click on the black screen and game will work properly in the full screen mode

I tried Proton 5.0-10, 5.13-6, and Experimental (which is based on 8 as the time of this report), but the startup sequence is always a black screen, rendering the game unplayable.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=30 %command%

Game starts with a black screen
The first time that I've opened the game, it started with a black screen. After some research, I found a way to fix it, so I've packed this and I uploaded to my github. You can see it here
After executing the script, the game loaded and I could play, but only in windowed mode :(
xbanish -a & %command%; killall xbanish
When first starting the game, it will run in fullscreen mode but the screen will be blank. Unfortunately this command needs to be run to set the game to 800x600 windowed mode, which is the only way to see the game:
echo "800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo" > ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Syberia/player.ini
The mouse cursor shows over the game cursor, which makes it difficult to play. To fix this, use xbanish to hide the mouse cursor while the game is playing:
Install xbanish, e.g. in Ubuntu:
sudo apt install xbanish
Set the game launch options to:
xbanish -a & %command%; killall xbanish
Fan is running slightly while playing, might have to limit TDP as orher reports suggest.
Game runs with black screen or doesn't launch at all with other Proton versions.
The game is playable with the the custom proton build (Proton-6.19-GE-1). Only windowed mode is supported.
The system cursor overlaps the in-game one

Works completely fine after switching to correct older Proton version. With other versions the game launches but the screen stays black.
TDP Limit - 3 Watts
Default SteamOS cursor appears over the games cursor during gameplay

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
echo "800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo" > ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Syberia/player.ini
Resolution is fixed at 800x600, as specified in the player.ini
file (the screen would go black without it).

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=30 %command%
If you have issues with flickering of the mouse, and strange behavior of input, or blackscreen i recommend Proton-6.19-Ge-1 but with DXVK not with WINED3D. Proton-6.19-Ge-1 has bugfix special for Syberia blackscreen issue. https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/6.19-GE-1 Works flawlessy with this version.
Frame limi = 40; Refresh rate = 40; TDP = 3 Watts
System cursor is shown together with game one, so sometimes it could be difficult to spot smaller things to click.
After installing game the player.ini file mentioned in other reviews was already there with proper commands.
Like in other reports. Needed to create player.ini file in game files location.
800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Fullscreen not works. Only 800x600 window.
Few random crashes.

Tried with: GE-Proton7-23, Proton Experimental, Proton 7.0-3, Proton 6.3-8, Proton 5.13-6, Proton 5.0-10. Video is black. Sound is ok.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
echo "800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo" > $STEAM_LIBRARY/steamapps/common/Syberia/player.ini
Video is black. Sound is ok.
Runs in 800 x 600 only (Same thing on native version). If you're ok with that, the game is playable. I couldn't figure out how to make it fullscreen with dgVoodoo2.
Steamdeck - Not supported without tinkering. But with effort the game appears perfectly playable.
Steam Deck configuration. Only one version of proton worked for me.
Within steam change: 'Enable steam overly while in-game' OFF Force the use of Proton 5.0-10
Within the game folder create a file called 'player.ini' and add one line of text: 800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Steamdeck was running loud and hot. Turned on game specific performance profile and set:
Framerate limit 40 Refresh rate limit 40 Half rate shading TDP limit set to lowest (3) FSR turned on and set to 2
Notable decrease in temperate (high 80s down to high 50s) and no notable gameplay impact.
Minor issue that the operating system mouse cursor sits over the game cursor.
Game runs black screen by default. Configuration settings in player.ini force windowed. In game mode on the deck this presents as a low res full screen. In desktop mode the game is windowed.
Mouse cursor overlays game cursor.
Adding the player.ini
file in the location of the .exe with the following command works with Proton experimental (similar to other users)
800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Mouse icon overlaps with the game icons making it hard to distinguish between items that are interactable and those that are not
Without tinkering, the initial video plays but the window stays black

Game requires some minor tinkering (same as the windows version according to comments). Proton 6, 7 and GE didn't work, had to use WINE 5
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
As others mentioned, added a player.ini
file in game's root folder (next to the exe) with one line:
800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Changed right trackpad click to left mouse click
For some reason game drains as much power as it can even with the frame limit. Set TDP limt to 5/6 watts, set screen refresh rate to 40Hz, add FSR scaling with sharpness set to 2 or 3. Extends battery life for twice as long and makes deck quiet and cool.
When launching the game some error message comes up, you can just close it and it works fine
I'm not sure PROTON_USE_WINED3D parameter changes anything though. Used Heroic Bash Launcher to launch GOG version directly from steam gaming mode
Crete file ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Syberia/player.ini with content:
1280 1024 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Resolution can be any value and didn't have effect. The important value is 0, that force windowed run
In windowed mode, the resolution are 800x600. They cannot be changed. To simulate a fullscreen gamplay, you can change the desktop resolution to 800x600 and (in case of KDE), force fullscreen for the window to remove title bar. This can be done in "Window Management -> Window Rules" with:
- Description: Syberia Steam
- Window class (application): Exact Match -> steamp_app_46500
- Match whole window class: No
- Window types: Normal Window
- Window title: Exact Match -> Syberia
- Fullscreen: Force -> Yes
- Ignore requested geometry: Force -> Yes
The desktop cursor icon and the game cursor icon are showed at the same time, that difficult the gameplay. As a workaround, you can run on startup unclutter -idle 0 to hide the desktop cursor icon.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Added a player.ini file in LIBRARYDIR/steamapps/common/Syberia with a single line:800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
only running in window mode at 800x600
Needs to create new file in game dir steamapps/common/Syberia/player.ini
with one line:
800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Game has only 800x600 window mode.
Played with Proton 5.13-6 and creating file player.ini.
Proton 6.3-8/7.0-1 show black window with music.

7.0rc6-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Changing 0 to 1 in player.ini
yields a black screen. I tried and failed to figure out how to launch the "dgVoodoo2" control panel with the protonprefix set.
Word to the wise: xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"

800x600 resolution
Black screen after start with defaults
- I've created player.ini with one line 1024 768 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
- Compatibility proton 5.13-6
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Added a player.ini file in steamapps/common/Syberia with a single line: 800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo
Game only works on windowed mode 800x600
Only works on 800x600 windowed mode

Installs, but every Proton version gives Steam Error popup: Application Load Error P:0000065432
Will try some of the tinker solutions.
