If you don't mind the slow menus and are willing to give up on the map editor, the game is definitely playable.
I followed this user method : https://www.protondb.com/users/793747973 and I was able to play multiplayer and watch other players games, but all the menus became slow (30 seconds to choose the map you want to play on), both in singleplayer and multiplayer.
Alt+tab put the camera in the top left corner. I managed to fix it by disabling camera controls for the Up, Down, Right and Left arrows.
Menus loading times are off the charts.
Without the method given above, multiplayer would just crash after a few seconds.
I tried Proton, Glorious Eggroll and Lutris, but the menus would still be REALLY slow. Hope someone can find a fix for this because it can rapidly become irritating.
Works fine after some tweaking. All the other bugs I have encountered are part of the game.
Could not join any public or private game or host one.
I don't know exactly how I solved the black screen issue, but I was able to join a lobby after trying Proton 4.11-13, adding PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% in the launch option and changing from NA servers to EU servers, then back to NA, in the game.
Now, the game works fine with Proton 5.0-9 and nothing else.
I don't know if it is related, but Steam also lost the Internet connection the first time I played online, and I had no server issues in game. I reloaded Steam and it was back to normal.
MESA drivers
After one restart, the dialogues where crackling a bit. I just unplugged and plugged my audio interface and it was fixed.
Reflexions in cars windows are non existent and I have thousands of little dots of light whenever I move the camera
Everything on low, and the framerates goes from 60 to 25, staying at 25-30 most of the time
Without the Mesa drivers, the game just doesn't launch
Wait for the game to get some patches. I cannot recommend it at the moment.
Still waiting for the game to be more stable and the audio to be totally fixed, but the proton guys did an amazing job fixing issues.
Radio, NPCs and tvs finally have sound, but there is some crackling to it. Audio from main quest NPCs and gun shots are fine.
A bit less FPS than on Windows
The audio fix is only available on Proton Experimental at the time of this review.
Made it work after patch 1.5 by trying every Proton and Proton GE versions I had.
The game didn't launch the first time I tried to open it after patch 1.5 (Proton 6.3-8). But after fiddling with some versions of Proton GE (5.9-GE-8-ST, 6.21-GE-2, 7.1-GE-2), a Microsoft redist package was installed. Rebooted Steam then I tried Proton experimental and 6.3-8, but they still crashed. Finally, when I tried with Proton 7.0-1, the game worked flawlessly. Just had to readjust the resolution.
Works perfectly fine once it is installed on the right drive.
The game was installed on my secondary drive (HDD), and I could only rotate and open menus. I installed the game on my main drive (SSD) and it worked out of the box.
If you are using POP OS, their is no need to configure your controller. In my case, the PS4 controller works just fine for all my games.
Works out of the box.
The game crashed the first time I opened it, but it ran flawlessly after.
The game works perfectly fine, but it is programmed to use your computer to it's full potential for no real reason. If your PC starts to sound like an aircraft, just enable VSync or limit the FPS in the game's settings.
Using Proton 6.3-8 fixed all the crash issues I had
The game requires a Microsoft account, so be wary of that.
The game crashes if you scroll too quickly in the moveset menu, otherwise the game runs great with Proton Experimental
Tried it both on my PC and on the Steam Deck, and it plays just like a native app
Maybe because of the last patch, multiplayer is unplayable on all servers.
Cannot join any server online
Do not buy this game on Linux for now. The devs, even with their new workforce, won't do anything to make that game playable on Linux.
The game do not stop stuttering, even with everything on Low.
Now, as soon as you find a match, the game will crash.
Can't even see the New World and Focus logos at the beginning. Now it is really impossible to even join a game.
I tried custom Eggroll and Proton 5.0 and 4, and nothing works. Stutters where there should not be any and the multiplayer is not even working anymore.
It works, but be cautious.
FPS are not that stable, but it's also the case on Windows
Since the latest patch (november 16), I am able to play online PvE and PvP matches, without being disconnected at all. If you own the game, it might be the good moment to give the game a second chance. I am using Proton Experimental and the game runs just as fine as on Windows.
Works out of the box. Can't tell the difference with the Windows version
Not specific to Linux, but if you play with a controller, any input on a mouse will add a second player in the lobby. So if I wanted to go on my desktop, I had to wait for the game to begin.
The game runs well with a few settings changes.
Slight crackling noises in the first few seconds after starting the game, but it disappears quickly.
With my config, I could go up to 180 FPS+ down to 45 FPS in some areas in High settings. If you play the game in Medium without tessellation and change in the user.cfg file r_enum_ssaa 10 to r_enum_ssaa 1 to remove stutters, you should not have any problems and it looks really good.
If your game keeps stuttering even after modifying the user.cfg file, it is probably because the game changed it to its default state.
Even if I put the file in read only, the game still manages to modify it. So keep this file not too far away, in case you have the same problem.
Had to use this code, or the launcher doesn't let me in : mv ./TaleWorlds.MountAndBlade.Launcher.exe ./TaleWorlds.MountAndBlade.Launcher.exe.backup ln -s Bannerlord.Native.exe TaleWorlds.MountAndBlade.Launcher.exe
Saves take around 30 seconds before letting me play again.
If I Alt+Tab, the game crashes a minute later. Happened in game and in the menus.
For some reason, my Left Alt key is not recognised by the game. Every other key works fine for some reason. I am using the e1.5.6 beta version of the game and Proton Experimental.
Game works out of the box. Nothing important to report.
I was expecting more performances from this game, but I do get a stable 60 FPS at High settings. The websites links inside the menu page seems to work randomly too.
Also, for people playing the game in Russian : if someone speaks German, you will often hear the Russian translation at the same time, and it can get confusing sometimes. Not a sound glitch, it's just the way they do it in Russia.
The game has some small problems, but nothing related to Linux. And it is easy to fix.
Not related to Linux, but the audio mixing is awful. I managed to fix this by disabling one of the audio outputs for the game in Pop ! OS settings.
Don't know if it's related to Linux, but in the very first area of the game, the lighting was a bit weird around the helicopter. It looks perfectly fine after that.
Works like it was a native Linux game.
Works great with the latest Proton. I had some really minor lighting bugs, but I believe they aren't related to Proton and they did not impact gameplay. I was able to play the tutorial and the first map without any issues at very high settings with 70+ FPS.
Crashes are probably coming from a driver issue, yet, the game is still very playable.
Crashes sometimes do weird things to saves, reloading old loadouts or not giving me back the ammo I used before restarting my PC.
I began to experience crashes on the second map, where the game would just shut down my graphic card and crash right after. It happens after 1 or 2 hours of playing, depending on the map. Probably the same issue Metro Exodus has.
Thanks to Eggroll, it works, but if you want an optimal experience, wait for the devs to work a bit more on it.
Proton-6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Some textures are missing or stretched out.
I had one crash launching the game for the first time, but after that, it played like a native game. The devs also showed interested on making the game playable on the Steam Deck, so expect better compatibility in the months to come.
The missing or streched textures only appeared in the final game. I played the demo without any issues at all.
Thought it wouldn't work, but Proton Experimental/6.3-7 does the job. Works out of the box !
Don't know what they modified, but Proton 6.3-7 didn't work for the demo. But now, it plays just fine out of the box for the final game. No glitchy or missing textures whatsoever.
