I added: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% to the Steam Launch command as per the previous review.
If you care more about the strategy and performance than the appearance, this is better than the Definitive Edition.

Other player's connections will impact you if there are many players or bots.
Same as Windows the odd random "link dead" from the server. You could enjoy this trip into the past of deeper MMORPG gaming.

I can not get the game to display at 1440p, I have to make it a 1080p window.

It might be the games coding, actions didn't go one into another easily.
Works out of the box with the right Proton version
ALT + Tab changes the resolution with windowed full screen. Full screen kept appearing on the wrong display. ALT + ENTER corrects it. Just a constant nuisance, nothing serious about it.
Needed to revert back to Proton 5.0-10 as 5.13-5 wouldn't run it.
Also have to run it from Library to select from the menu to run it with BattlEye. Important to find a good community server with a trust worthy admin that is active and removes cheaters.
Everything on the tin is delivered!
Unfortunately, I have no one at this time to test the multiplayer with. Everything else worked flawlessly without any tweaking.
There are very few servers and they are very low populations. They are also de-listed.
Some sounds get stuck in a loop but it is very rare.
Changing between windows and full screen, exclusive can cause it to not run the next time.
You might need to force DVK via Proton Launch command.

Great game but the current Linux servers are for new players and casuals. I am not aware of a vanilla server.
FPS lower since I last played, probably due to new content.
If I use Windowed Mode it goes to the wrong monitor. If I use full screen it won't load again and I have to delete the .cfg file.
Steam -> View -> Servers -> Filter: Rust and Anti-cheat = Not secure. Sort by players.
