Just perfect
No problems so far, no extra config needed.
Perfect native port
Just lower graphic options. This is a rpi5 after all ;)

The game is hardcapped to 60fps. Doesn't support 16:10 so black bars on the top and bottom. Otherwise perfect on max settings.
a classic that plays as expected. recommended
This game runs well in native I used Proton because I wanted make sure I did not have any issues with a windows user with the new V8 patch.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
When I tested multiple controllers I found that the Nintendo Switch Pro controller will randomly pause when used with bluetooth. This occured in online co-op and offline singleplayer.
Online co-op with a Windows PC player was smooth and pausing for extended periods of time did not disconnect us. We finished a playthough of arcade on the V8 patch.
If you have a black screen with no audio in Proton when you launch then PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% this should fix the issue as it still persists in patch V8.

Just add the command line: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% No more black screen and works perfectly (mine is GoG version with proton GE 7.48 running)

Random multiplayer is dead, but easily playable with friends
Works perfectly out of the box, great performance and battery life
Enable half rate shading, set TDP 7watts, manual GPU clock 800, Scaling filter FSR
Crashed on initial load of stage 1 in Campaign mode. Restarting game fixed this
Despite the first crash when loading Stage 1 of the Campaign it has played great since. Tinker settings optional to improve battery life (up to around 4 hours play time), they make little to no difference in the games performance. Looks great and plays great.

Marche a la perfection, je n'ai jamais vu quelqu'un distribuer autant de pain a la fois !
Une pépite qui fonctionne parfaitement sous Steam et Linux.
No tinkering needed, and no issues so far.
Runs natively, flawless out of the box.

Clipping in Chinatown no longer occurs. Fixed in a December 2021 patch.
Native port run flawlessly
Clipping in the Dojo stage with Galsias & Donovans.

After a new update, the game works perfectly.

Mr.X Nightmare crashes The Game
After installing Mr. X Nightmare DLC the game no longer runs. It starts but doesn't go to the title screen.
I also tried using the GE versions of Proton, but nothing worked. Waiting for new updates to come back to the game.
Have been playing and loving this game since launch. However after the Balancing Patch update - the game refuses to load.

Perfect! Run smoothly out the box,
Now loading times are fast!

Perrfect! Run smoothly out the box
Loading times between levels are a bit slow.

Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Used GloriousEggroll's Custom Proton
Download GloriousEggroll / proton-ge-custom - Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF. It stops all the major loading time lag and slowdown.

5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Plays perfectly fine with Proton 5.0.7 but has really slow loading times. Using GloriousEggroll Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF fixes that!
This game runs perfect after the levels have loaded. The problem is loading is extremely slow.
Very slow loading in between the levels
Streets of Rage 4 has a new location for Steam Cloud Saves, different from your Save Game. You're going to need to symlink these two to sync with Steam Cloud.
To symlink your Saved Game for Steam Cloud.
- Go to .local > share and delete/rename/backup/move the folder "Streets of Rage 4 Save and Config.
- Then type this in terminal
$ ln -s ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/985890/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/Streets\ of\ Rage\ 4\ Save\ and\ Config/ ~/.local/share/Streets\ of\ Rage\ 4\ Save\ and\ Config
Note that if you have your Steam library in another drive, you're going to need edit with the path for your drive.
It just works. Zero issues. Hit play and start playing.
Run perfectly smooth. Didn't tried multiplayer or coop though

Also tried with regular Proton 5.0.7 and the experience was the same.

Valve's vanilla 5.0-7 had slow loading and a recurring stutter. My game would systematically drop down to 49 fps every half a second.
This fork of proton fixes both issues and the game now runs at a rock solid 60. Big thanks to GloriousEggroll and the other ProtonDB users.
PS: Note that the online play being trash is a known issue with the game itself and not a bug of wine/proton. The devs are looking into it.

Perfect gameplay, exept online play. FPS and lag are terrible when online. Even with Proton 5.8-GE.
Online play are terrible.
Online play.

Custom Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF by GloriousEggroll fixes long loading times. Online multiplayer works perfectly.
The slow level loading issue is solved with Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF.
Plays perfectly on Proton 5.0-7. The only issue is that load times are much longer than on Windows.
Load times are much longer than on Windows.

The game works fine out of the box on Proton 5.0.7, the only issue is the loading times.
As others have reported, the game seems to temporarily stall when loading, almost like it's not responding temporarily during load times. Gameplay itself is perfectly fine otherwise once you're loaded into a level.

I'm really having fun, the game works great out of the box and as a fan of the series, I think it's the best episode since the first one.
Seems to refuse to start if I give the focus to another window (in AwesomeWM) while launching from Steam. Works all the time if I don't move my mouse while launching. I don't have this issue with other games, I don't have any issue with this game once it has finished launching.
Not an issue for a typical Windows gamer, but as an experienced Linux user, I'm surprised the game audio is not pluggable through PulseAudio (meaning I can't route the sound to my bluetooth headset, for example). I'm not sure yet if it's an issue with my configuration (it works flawlessly with Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition, among others) or with the game using ALSA directly…
