Proton Experimental with no extra tinkering does not run the game at all. ("Failed to initialize player: [...] InitializeGraphicsEngine failed.") The following versions seem to work fine except for the initial audio stuttering: Proton 7.0, Proton 6.3. The following older versions seem to work fine except for the initial video, which is replaced by silence and a black screen: Proton 5.13, Proton 4.11.

Since v1.2, the game runs well under proton.
The intro movie is not working all the time. But it can be disabled in the settings.

since latest patch, planet detail screen is missing, it is white, but does not influence gameplay as it is cosmetic only

The long load time is gone (may have been first launch). The new 1.0.4 patch continues to work well. No issues at all.
Despite a long load at launch (black screen for ~45 seconds), the game runs perfectly. Maximum graphics settings, no slow downs or crashes.
Runs out of the box without any tweaks required but framerate is rather low, around 15 fps in some screens. However as this is turn based game it didn't really impact my experience all that much.
