Following lighttwo's guidance, I finally got this game working. But I can't get the bindings for snap turning to work, since it requires you to open the console to input some commands, and opening the console does not seem to be possible on non-US keyboards.

Supposedly a general game issue
Playing on Mesa crashes the game on AMD GPUs. Use AMDGPU-PRO, vulkan-only package:
Crash on startup
+com_skipIntroVideo 1
Crash on startup (no error message)
VR equipment: Valve Index

wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0000000000000000 at address 00000001414C8526 (thread 016c)
Switching to LXQd doesn't make any difference
Artifacts make the game unplayable
Objects in the center of the screen get culled in Gnome desktop environment but do not in LXQT. Using LXQT gets better performance in VR as well so I recommend using it instead of Gnome when playing VR games on PopOS (and probably upstream Ubuntu as well)
Game is entirely unplayable because things turn invisible if they are directly in front of you.
Objects (including enemies) in the center of the viewport are being culled making the game entirely unplayable.
Works perfectly out of the box (HTC Vive).
There is a tweak regarding joystick bindings, but it is the same in Windows and in Linux. The default Valve Index bindings are very bad. I went to the community bindings and found one named "DOOM VFR Configuration for the Index Controller". It requires you to once having started the game, use these commands in the console: "bind STEAMVR_PRIMARY_AXIS2 _lookLeft; bind STEAMVR_PRIMARY_AXIS3 _lookRight; bind STEAMVR_PRIMARY_AXIS4 _jump; bind STEAMVR_PRIMARY_A _weapnext; bind STEAMVR_SECONDARY_A _weapprev". Then it goes smoothly and you can turn smoothly instead of instant, which makes the game much better to play. Teleport still works, which you might need to reach some areas. If you like these bindings, you can just locate the /steamapps/common/DOOM VFR/base/vr_default.cfg, edit it with a text editor and add these bindings one each line at the end of the file
Perfect

Fog-like artifacts make the game barely playable.

Ran great
