PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Crashed once in my 3 hour playthrough, I think it's the game itself though
Used WINED3D because of old hardware

Changing the config file wasn't necessary to run the game, but it was the only way I could change the resolution.
Game crashed when I alt-tabbed out. Luckily you can save the game before you try it.
The only thing that really stood out was the game often froze for several seconds at the end of a dance. It was benign, though. I think the game always did stutter there even on Windows, but I don't remember it doing it for that long.
Game crashes on alt-tab and on changing the resolution. The optional launcher would also crash when trying to change settings, but I don't think the launcher really adds anything anyway. No other crashes that I can recall.
You'll probably want to set the resolution to a 4:3 resolution like 1024x768. The game wasn't designed to handle 16:9 displays.

Upon launch, the video introduction looks scrambled and overscanned.
I believe an older version of Proton is required to play this game.

Fullscreen doesn't work, only windowed
Horrible stuttering, lagging controls, screen not updating
on Proton-5.4-GE-3 works perfectly

cannot enter city without alt tab
Need to alt tab every time you enter a city, numpad doesn't work, impossible to combat because you ahve to alt tab every frame

The newer versions of proton either didn't work or would cause the cutscenes to play improperly, but someone on the steam forum for this game suggested the fixes that I'm reposting in this review.

Setting it up was easier than on newer windows versions, it just works out of the box

Works perfectly, out of the box

Seemed fine in a short test
Some (loading?) screens are heavily distorted, but actual gameplay seems to be fine
If you play the game on a Steam Deck without a Keyboard or Mouse, a heavy remapping of buttons (or using a community layout) is necessary.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Mapped numpad keys and keyboard shortcuts to various controller buttons
Distorted image and resolution errors during videos and certain minigames (e.g. land battles)
Video sequences and visuals in certain minigames (e.g. land battles) broken in vanilla state, needs downgrading to Proton 5.0-10 to work properly.
Forcing the game to use Proton 5.0-10 is necessary; using any other Proton Layer (even GE or Experimantal) leads to broken videos and resolution errors during minigames. In my case, when I first installed and used 5.0-10, the game wouldn't start at first for some reason; I had to switch to Proton Experimental, launch the game with that (resulting in broken videos), then switch BACK to 5.0-10 for everything to work properly. Since then, I've noticed no further issues.
The game will only display in 4:3, not in widescreen. There's a fan-patch for a widescreen fix available, but I didn't test that.
Startup and cutscene corruption fixed with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% -Not Widescreen but there is a patch and config hack for that
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

Tried both Steam and GOG versions of the game. Required switching to Proton 5.0-10 for both versions. Otherwise cutscenes had distorted resolution and color artifacts, and in game transitions between screens were sometimes very slow. All of this was resolved with the older version of Proton.
Make sure numlock is turned on, otherwise the keyboard controls won't work (even when mapped to a controller)!
There was some major input lag problems at the beginning of playing that disappeared with time
First ~5 minutes the UI was almost unusable. This problem disappeared after that.

Works in Kubuntu 21.10
All the video cutscenes are artifacted but can be easily skipped with the ESC key. Everything else looks great.
Seems to be a slight stutter when new ships load from off-screen.

Will not launch
Tried using Proton 6.3-5
Gameplay works very well. The artifacts in the cut scenes doesn't influence gameplay.
The cutscenes movies show lots of horzontal dashed lines.
FMVs do not play correctly; they have wrong dimensions and crazy colors. It probably has to do with my old graphics card.
There's a rare slowdown when playing some animations. It doesn't affect gameplay from what I could tell.
Other people have mentioned problems with the numpad, but it works fine for me.
The game ran well, with occasional stuttering, but it did not diminish the experience. I used version 4.11-13 for the game to run.
Some stuttering.
Number pad needed to be off for keyboard controls to work.

Most recent Proton's great. Don't use Eggroll, as it has heavy stutter. Crashes that happen do on Windows as well.
Same crashes exist on Windows
Work great Was unable to launch with proton 5.0-6, but 4.2-9 work perfectly. Problem with 16:9 and numpad as say previously.
Game is in 4:3, but it's not an issue with proton...
numpad must be off to work properly
Game a bit slow considering the hardware, but perfectly smooth to play
Lack of widescreen is a bit of a bummer, but it can be looked past since its such an old game. I found it completely playable.
No option for wide screen. 4:3 resolutions only.
Some lag/stuttering occasionally when in the tavern for a few seconds.
Had no issues with the numpad like other users. May have been fixed in latest proton version.
The game only using 60% of this screen will scare anyone away.
Tried all versions of Proton. Couldnt get it to run in widescreen. So 4:3 like 20 years ago. Works perfectly well in widescreen and scaling in Windows.

Mostly stable and functional
No widescreen
Occasional crashes during sword fights and after naval battles.
Numpad doesn't work, slowness during combat.
Numpad doesn't work, had to use on screen buttons.
Performance drop during combat.

Played briefly, all seemed to work.

Works well except all forms of battles, performance issues causing the game to be near unplayable, but still comfortable and fun to play. Loading areas also is noticeably worse than on windows with the same computer, with my character taking about half a second to pop up. In general I have really weak hardware, so any small issues are magnified on my computer.

numpad does not work - have to use onscreen controls ingame. some minor lags. but it works quite good and i enjoyed hours already.

Tested sea battles and fencing. Neither numpad controls nor alternative bindings through an ini file work, so the option typically bound to 5 on the numpad has to be done with the mouse. The mouse cannot reach the bottom most section of the screen, and the game crashed when alt-tabbing back into it.

Ran excellent with no modifications, at max settings. DID NOT experience a "black texture" bug that I had previously experienced under WINE that would render the game unplayable after a short while. Attempting to change resolution from the in-game menu caused a crash, but worked fine when I did it from the opening menu.

Runs well out of the box. There are occassional misrenders of text, and the game sometimes lags during cut-scenes. I had to disable num-lock to use the numeric keypad. Other than that no issues.

Runs perfectly. Played for 3 hours straight.

Mostly Works well. Numpad controls didn't work. occasional crashes

Runs well, rare crashes to desktop

Crashes almost in under a minute in Big Picture with the Steam Controller. Crashes after like 30 minutes with kbm.

Works perfectly
