The newer versions of proton either didn't work or would cause the cutscenes to play improperly, but someone on the steam forum for this game suggested the fixes that I'm reposting in this review.
Don't spend any money in the Mann co. store or on the community market until Valve unfucks their game
TF2 doesn't run at all, even trying some of the launch options I've seen suggested by others. The best I've managed is running it through proton w/o launch options, which gets me to the main menu.
64 bit update not working, don't spend money until valve fixes their shit
-window
I have to launch the game in window mode, then change it to fullscreen so the text in the main menu displays correctly, but any attempt to join a server and play the game causes it to crash.
sound doesn't want to play through headphones, change PC audio settings on startup
audio defaults to the wrong playback device most of the time
Other than the aforementioned audio tinkering, the game runs just as good as it does on Windows.
Used to work great, but not launching as of last night
I've been playing this game on Linux for a while. Formerly I was able to get by with just proton experimental, but currently it's not even launching. Verifying file integrity and switching proton versions didn't do anything to fix this, I'll update the report if it stops crashing or I figure out how to make it work.
nonfunctional
Game doesn't even get to the main menu before freezing and forcing me to do a hard reboot of my PC.
