Disabled gyro (car was pulling left and right, which was confusing until I realised it was gyro).
Maxed out Trigger Threshold Point (Controller settings > edit layout > triggers > right trigger behavior settings (cogwheel to the right) > general > trigger threshold point) - set this to 32767 (max value).
Altered in-game control configuration to match my preferred playstyle. Mostly involved turning deadzones to 0 and throttle sensitivity to around 30-50% and steering sensitivity to 0%. Happy to share more detail on those settings if anyone wants to drop me a message.
Dropped graphics settings down to "low". Honestly, the graphics look great on such a small screen anyway, and it helped with a few FPS stutters I found at some points.
Some very minor pop-in/out at a distance. Not really that distracting.

Funktioniert ohne Probleme
Ja, was soll ich sagen. Das Spiel funktioniert so, wie es auch unter Windows laufen würde. Funktioniert bestens.
need to set Proton 7
RADV_PERFTEST=gpl %command%
To get working steering wheel in game, install Steering Wheel Manager - Oversteer.
Game plays as expected using the g29 wheel as long as you do not put the window out of focus
gamemoderun %command%;
G29 wheel stops working after returing to window after alt-tabbing. Works as expected when not exiting the window. (Issue happens in both windowed and fullscreen)
The KDE compositor causes some stuttering in the game, and a slight loss in framerate
I recomend modyfing the gamemode.ini file when using KDE to disable the compositor while playing
gamemoderun mangohud obs-gamecapture DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
"It just works" - T.Howard
in-game changes

Steam Deck's controls are detected as an Xbox One controller; trying to use custom controller settings doesn't respond to any inputs
Playing at 800p low settings: 1-2 frame dips in the beginning and ending of races; rare dip when tire smoke is in front of external camera
Unable to change controls during a race/in game
Runs perfect after swithing to GE and configuring the controls. with text issues only being due to screen size.
Changed most of the default controls to be more typical gamepad. Came up as attempting to set the deck to KB/Mouse.
Small text for the screen, mostly not needed, but you will want some of the info.
Audio studders by default. Switching audio device in game from "Pulse Audio" to my external USB DAC resolved the issue.
Sometimes requires proton version switching, but works most of the time
Use windowed mode if you have to Alt-Tab midgame. Unfocusing the game if its fullscreen causes it to freeze & blackscreen
The classic Project Cars experience. The same stuff probably exists on Windows too
Some stuttering when spectating others
Flawless controller support. I also have a triple monitor setup and it can be configured in the game settings with no issues. If you don't want to setup nvidia mosaic, you can just stretch the window across 3 monitors and it works fine
Haven't tested all aspects of the game, but was able to do a quick race and private testing session with no issues on GE-Proton.
Just like AMS2, this game runs surprisingly good on the deck with one exception - rumble seems to cause the game to slow down (braking, driving offroad). If you turn controller vibration completely off in control settings, the issue goes away. This is also a problem on desktop, and in Automobilista 2 (same engine).
I haven't personally gotten the drifting/stuttering issues others have noted, unless it's related to that same slowdown issue. If you already own AMS2, I'd say test that first if you were considering buying PCars 2.
Continuously triggering "right"
Not usable due to constantly navigating to the right and steering wheel going right
While the game runs I would not recommend playing this on the Steam Deck as the stuttering makes the game near unplayable.
Hard to read but not impossible. In game hud was readable.
Significant stuttering while in a race making racing very hard.
Stuttering in the game makes it hard to steer and it being a core component in the game would in my opinion make it unplayable. While drving the stuttering would effect how hard you are steering which causes car to lose control frequently. It is important though to keep in mind that this is the limitation of the hardware and not the software. The software works flawlessly and if the suttering problems were to be fixed I would highly recommend it.
Blackscreen while alt-tabbed, resumes as normal when focus returned.
Multiplayer works perfectly.
This game works exactly as it does on windows. Check the compatibility box and click play!
There used to be a crash when the game window lost focus, that is now gone. Flawless performance in MP and SP.

Works great out of the box, and with gamemode and Proton-GE I was able to use max settings and get 70 fps.
gamemoderun %command%
Only played for a few minutes with my friends.
Xbox controller used.
The game works fine out of the box, but with Feral gamemode and Proton-GE I was able to turn all settings to max (except motion blur) and had my fps start out around 50-60 fps and eventually had the fps stabilize between 60-70 fps. Measurements taken using MangoHud on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway map.
Works flawless with G920. No tinkering required.

Doesn't launch when clicking play.
Different proton versions were tried but none worked.
It freezes for half a second every 10 minutes or so. A bit annoying as one single freeze can ruin an entire race.
Runs similar to Windows, sometimes even better, a normal user is less likely to encounter the problems I encountered.
When using 2 monitors (game fullscreen on one) the mouse clicks were not registered where the cursor was but a little to the side
Sometimes after switching to a different window it stops taking controller input and needs to be restarted
Works out of the box
I had no issues with alt+tabbing, everything works fine with stock proton. VR works well too (Index)
Using Proton 6.21-2 GE https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Game will black screen if you alt tab or if the game loses focus.
Using Steam controller configurations for Xbox controller, the game would stutter while holding any button on the controller. Unable to use custom configs from Steam Big Picture with this issue.

Follow instructions at the bottom of the page to expand FD limit if you are not using systemd, or a version of systemd below 240.

Worked a few hours ago, now it does not.
Somewhere along the lines of upgrading from kernel 5.15.2 to 5.15.3, something broke. Now crashes due to failing to locate BugSplatRC, which is present in the game files.
works great and runs well
if you tab out and tab back in your controller won't work anymore. you have to quit out and start the game up again.
To get it to work properly, I had to change the Proton version to "5.0-10" in the game's Properties > Compatibility section.
Alt + Tabbing out breaks the game. I haven't tried anything other than full screen mode because it's how I prefer to play the game, but if you click off the window the game shows a black screen and is seemingly unrecoverable in my experience. Could be different with a different GPU/driver, I'm not sure though.
Since I use a DualShock 4, at first it was not detected, however enabling it in Steam's general controller settings solved the problem.
On some tracks, on the first outlap, there is some slight stuttering. This may have been because I have the game on an NTFS hard drive, and the problem goes away within the first lap or two. Other than that it runs great, but I thought it was important to note.
The aforementioned Alt-Tab locks up the game, plus it seems broken (at least in Arch/Manjaro) with the current version of Proton.
Works perfectly for me Out of the Box using Proton 6.3-6
Runs Almost Flawlessly Out of the Box
I noticed slight frame drops at the start of a race, other than that, it's basically perfect.
Läuft butterweich. Runs like butter.
Proton-6.15-GE-1
not launching when i hit play
I used the Logitech G29 wheel, input and force feedback is good. You have to set it to PS3 mode.

Around 40 FPS
slow to load
Platinum.
Voices are quiet sometimes. It might be game-related rather than Linux-related

6.9-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
I have not tried other proton versions with this game. I haven't tried multiplayer.

ALT+TAB worked after I used Protontricks (protontricks 378860 winecfg) and enabled "emulate a virtual desktop".
Had to run the fix mentioned by the_mule further below (couldn't configure steering with Logitech DFGT before that).
Logitech wheel g29 does not work. It worked for a while. I tried the old solutions and others.
