Without using GE Proton 9-4, the game will occasionally crash while in the abilities screen.
Must install GE-Proton 9-4 to keep game from crashing in abilities screen. After install, game worked perfectly with no crashes.
I have only tested 9-4, other newer versions may also work.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING CUSTOM GE PROTON, VALVE'S OFFICIAL PROTON DID NOT KEEP CRASHES FROM OCCURING

Random crashes when opening upgrade menu.
Perfect

Requires a mod to perform the same as it did for me using the same hardware on Windows 10

Protontricks to install consolas font for DDMK mod
Game will not launch when Fullscreen is enabled in the game's settings
Consistent crash when viewing certain items in the Skill List menu
Opening FMV does not play right, both audio and video hangs every few seconds, then resumes before hanging again
Game does work pretty well with DDMK mod (used to turn off Bloom, Blur, and Motion Blur filters) and launch settings listed above. I found that The opening FMV does work properly if you replace "DXVK_ASYNC=1" with "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" which also fixes the crashes I was getting in the Skill List menu. It did cause Steam Input to malfunction (I was using a DualShock 4 and the controller bindings were wrong, and the D-Pad didn't register at all), and also caused cutscenes to stutter significantly, though the stutter might not be a problem on better hardware.

Game has a chance of crashing while viewing a video for a move. Switch to the latest version of Proton to fix this.

If you have problems with fullscreen mode, then do it using ALT+Enter without using the settings of the game itself, thereby next time you will have no problems leaving the game and entering fullscreen.

Some of the tutorial videos do not play correctly (These are the small clips that play when a new screen has popped up to explain what a button does or how a feature works). An immediate one you'll come across is the "wall jump" tutorial video.
Minimal impact on gameplay. Most of them do play correctly.
When launching as configured by steam, there is no audio in the opening cut scene. I also attempted Proton GE 9-11, still no sound. Switching to regular proton 8-05 restored audio to the intro cutscene and seems to be the best fit for this game. Launch commands and recommendations to hex edit are likely deprecated and no longer required.

The game may crash when a video for a skill loads in the upgrate menu
Run perfectly but can crash in the upgrade menu

TDP 12W, 60 FPS
After applying the offcical Proton 9.0 from Valve, intro cinematic started playing sound. Otherwise, game runs flawlessly, as before.
Completed the game without issues using a Dualshock 4 controller
Runs without any problems out of the box.

Used dmc4_downgrade from https://github.com/serpentiem/ddmk#devil-may-cry-4
The game launches in windowed, it will continue to work when you switch it to fullscreen. But relaunching the game in the fullscreen will cause the game to hang.
Was unable to get the game working until I downgraded the geme executable to the older version. Downgrade is avalible at (https://github.com/serpentiem/ddmk#devil-may-cry-4). Game tested and works on proton version to 7.0-6 and GE-Proton 7-5.
Wouldn't reccomend that you fullscreen the game. At first works fine, but at game relaunch the game hangs. You can fix this by editing config file located at (SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/329050/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/CAPCOM/DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION/config.ini), and changing FullScreen option to OFF (FullScreen=OFF).
Hope this helps.

i used ge proton 8-15, i finished the game witout any issues, everything worked perfectly

Doesn't launch. Tried various launch options, even hex-edited exe according to a common fix for the Windows version not launching, but no dice.

Installing wmp11 fixes the problem with the opening video not playing.
The game runs fine in general but with some occasional stuttering and framedrops.

Installed consolas font for DDMK to work
Intro audio is missing
Some tutorial videos (e.g. Pandora's Omen) will be missing if you use normal Proton
It's recommended to use Proton GE, which will help fix missing tutorial videos (thank you to Saxjon for pointing this out). However, I do not know why the intro audio is missing.
To use DDMK, I wrote a comprehensive guide here.
if ordinary gamer is one that expects smooth ride with flawless frames etc, then no. but if you are not so demanding, then yes
some stuttering on random
while changing resolution, game sometimes crashed. after few tries, everything was set up.
some occasional frame drops, but still playable
game is playabe with some occasional stuttering and rare crashes.

If game is launched with fullscreen on, game will turn to black
Minor stuttering occurs when there's a lot happening quickly
Game sometimes crashes when browsing through Skill Up part of shop
As another user named skau pointed out in one of the reports, it's possible to use DDMK for this game. I made a detailed guide here.
Other than that, the issues I detailed in my previous report (and here) still persist as usual.
Playable with a few caveats
Minor stuttering in a new area/against new enemies
If it's launched in fullscreen, it will be stuck on a black screen
Occasional crashes while browsing through the Skill Up part of the shop
I played until Mission 3 on high settings. The game and cutscenes run perfectly most of the time, however do note that:
- Launching with fullscreen turned on gives a black screen. The workaround is either to:
- launch in Windowed then fullscreen with ALT+ENTER, but you need to close the game in Windowed mode too
- use some of the workarounds provided by other Steam users down below
- Some stuttering is to be expected especially in new areas or against new enemies.
- Game sometimes crash while browsing through shop, specifically the Skill Up part where you can preview the moves.
WINED3D work 100% for DX10 and lower versions for any game if you have trouble with DXVK to work with something that not DX11.

Installing the font "consolas" is required for DDMK to work.
The game has problems launching to fullscreen mode. Using DDMK's borderless window mode solves this.
Install DDMK as instructed in the read-me, you will need to downgrade your game using xdelta3.
(Pro tip: Any distro worth using should distribute xdelta3 on its repositories)
Run protontricks 329050 consolas
, this font is necessary for DDMK to work or else your game will crash on launch.
Add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b"
to your environment variables to allow DDMK to be loaded by the game.
Once the game is launched DDMK shall greet you, you can then enable the Borderless Window under the "System" section. Make sure Fullscreen is set to OFF in-game.
The game works really great, i just finished it with both Nero/Dante and Vergil campaigns.
The game crashes on start if the fullscreen is set to "true" so, make sure to always disable it when you quit, and enable it when you start playing.
If you're soft locked outside of the game, edit the config file (located in Steam/steamapps/compatdata/329050/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/CAPCOM/DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION/config.ini) and modify the value "Fullscreen=ON" to "Fullscreen=OFF".
With the base Proton, videos/cinematics are skipped, so keep that in mind.
Works really great out of the box, which is a surprise compared to the HD collection.
A bit of Stuttering during the first minute of gameplay. Nothing really important.
Cutscences DO work compared to the HD collections where they were skipped.
Runs like a dream out of the box but can drain battery very quickly. Minor sound glitches but nothing game breaking.
Default battery life on a full charge is around 1.5 to 2 hours of play. Setting TDP to 5 Watts and manually adjusting the GPU clock to 1000 Mhz gives upwards to 1.5 hours of extra battery. Framerate can be locked to 30fps, or refresh rate can be set to 40hz for added battery extention but in-game frame limiter must be set to "Variable."
Some FMVs in the game lack audio. Otherwise, in-game audio works fine.

Funziona perfettamente, anche i puccoli riquadri con la dimostrazione delle tecniche nel menu dei potenziamenti funziona come dovrebbe (questo è probabilmente un fix molto recente, stando alle altre recensioni)
Game is running perfectly fine, even the small tutorial video box in the upgrade menu works as expected (i guess this was fixed recently)
./dmc4fix.sh && DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
The game refuses to launch if Fullscreen is set to ON in the config file, so I wrote a script that reverts Fullscreen to OFF every time before launch (requires coreutils
and sed
):
#!/bin/bash
SCRIPT_DIR="$(dirname "$(readlink -f "$0")")"
PREFIX_DIR="$(readlink -f "$SCRIPT_DIR/../../compatdata/329050/pfx/")"
CONFIG_PATH="$PREFIX_DIR/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/CAPCOM/DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION/config.ini"
if test -f "$CONFIG_PATH"; then
sed -i 's/FullScreen=ON/FullScreen=OFF/' "$CONFIG_PATH"
fi
Save this as dmc4fix.sh
in the root folder of your DMC4SE install.
Then open a terminal window, cd
to the root folder of your DMC4SE install and enter the following command to give the script the executable permission:
chmod +x dmc4fix.sh
After that, add the following line to your launch options:
./dmc4fix.sh && DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
This will allow the script to run every time you launch the game, effectively reverting back to FullScreen=OFF before every launch. Then you can just press ALT+ENTER to enter fullscreen again and it will work.
Proton-GE and the DXVK_ASYNC=1 are recommended to fix stutters and issues with ingame FMVs.
In-game FPS limiter works only in gameplay, not cutscenes. Vsync or built-in Steam Deck FPS limiter solves the issue.
Using Proton Experimental also works but prevents tutorial mini-movies from playing because of Media Foundation issues.
Beside the problems, it runs perfectly out of the box and are problems that can be fixed in newer Proton versions
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
The "skill upgrade demonstration" videos are borked in the standard Proton version, ProtonGE fixes it
If you enable fullscreen without insert the listed commands, in the next time that you open the game, it will stuck in a black screen.
Sometimes the game have stutters a little bit, isn't frequent.

with the new nvidia driver, wayland and the new kernel, it helped a lot in the performance, I can play with much less lag than before
minor crashes because of the shader compiler
I don't know what really helped the performance, but I do know that now you can ignore the lag caused by the shader compiler while playing

the shader compilation kills the hack and slash experience
even after waiting for the shader compilation before opening, it still happens several shader compilations, dxvk-async does not help
Massive stuttering when enemy spawn and lower fps than expected with PROTON_NO_D3D11=1
For some reason the newest proton that I can run on my machine is the 5.0-10, which is enough for most of my games.
But fortunately this is not the case of DMC3 SE.
If I run the game without any flag, it launches and runs amazing in the first run. But it will only show a black screen starting from the secon.
The black screen can be solved with the PROTON_NO_D3D11=1
, but it comes with massive stutterings and lower fps (10-20%).
